I'm really taken with this one.
It's not cheap. What I mean to say is that there's a general range dealers expect to pay for a given grade. I never want to see cheap stones. Lower priced goods, yes. Cheap stones, no.
So many times the most remarkable Fancy Shape diamonds carry a stronger price tag than a more average stone with the same GIA grade.
Nowadays large, high quality diamonds are getting much harder to come by.
We had a call from a dealer today. They found us in the "Red Book".
This book contains listings of almost every jewelry company in the US- both retail and wholesale.
Anyway, they asked about any G/SI1's we had- in carat plus sizes.
"Where are you?" I asked
"On Sixth street in LA" - that's LA's diamond district.
"I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but why don't you buy them from someone on Hill St?" I asked
"They're too expensive, we thought NY would be cheaper." he says
Well, it probably is on some things- but G/SI1's with GIA VG, or EX cut grades carry strong prices in NY or LA.
When I told him our price, he said- "That's what I have to pay here!"
Welcome to the real world buddy!
Well cut stones are going to be easier to sell, and carry a price that could be 20% higher than something less than spectacular with the same GIA grade.
With fancy shapes in particular, trying to guess what they look like based on the GIA report is totally impossible.
This one has a GIA report only a few weeks old.
I don't expect it to hang around long.....if it's not sold already...
