Ok, just out of curiosity... Take the following diamond shapes:

round, oval, marquise, pear, cushion, EC, princess, radiant, OEC, OMC

Assuming the cut on all these shapes are equal (EXCELLENT CUT, not an overly deep or shallow, nail head, etc.,), what would be the most brilliant in order?

I thought it might be good for some lurkers or people who don't know much about diamonds or want to know more, to have some sound advice.

i'm no expert but i would guess,

round comes first...  and then radiant and princess...  cushion, oval, marquise, pear come after...  then emerald...  not sure about oec or omc...

Hi Everyone,
This question is kind of like saying "Who's hotter, blonds, redheads or brunettes?

Of course there's no answer to that one because every person is different.
Same for diamonds of different shapes.....
The "common knowledge" ( quotes because I do not buy it) is that a round brilliant is most brilliant.
Proponents of this balderdash point to results generated when you point a laser into a diamond, and measure how much comes out.
Anyone out there have laser beams for eyes?

Anyway, the answer for me, is that every diamond - of any shape- can be incredibly lively, or terribly dull. This has more to do with other factors beside the shape.

Great question though!

Sexy Latin Brunettes!

Great question snooper.  I agree with david that any diamond can be lively or dull, but i think that just the number of facets alone would make the rb for all intents and purposes the more "sparkly" of the diamond shapes, and the asscher/emerald the least "sparkly"

AZ, theortically that might be true- but it's simply not true on a case by case basis- that's the danger of such generalizations.....

For example- I agree that , in general, Emerald cuts have "glitter" as opposed to "sparkle"
Yet, sometimes the corners can really flash a lot of sparkle.......

Hmm.

Actually, this is making me wonder about the cut quality of my EC. It doesn't have what I would describe as glitter. I do see a lot of big flashes of colored fire from it, but I can't say I've noticed glitter or sparkle. It seems to have quite a big table (don't have any stats on it) so I wonder if that is affecting its performance re glitter? I love the stone, it blazes sometimes, but I am curious about the cut.

Good point! Thanks for giving your opinion David! For me what was troubling was, I always thought RB had more "sparkle" yet when I look at my EC (which I miss David) it has glitter and it's just amazing! That's why I was confused when people said "Step cuts aren't that sparkly" as the EC I bought from you I LOVE!!!

I miss my EC/halo as it's in NYC.  I sent it to match the color of the rose gold bands as it can vary a bit... And seeing yours, DJ's, and GL, the only thing keeping me strong is knowing it'll look smashing!!!

Can someone give me an example of what the difference is between sparkle and glitter? I always thought that sparkles glittered! LOL

I always use the word "flashes" to describe emerald and asscher cuts.  They remind me of mirrors.  I love the sparkle of diamonds, but also find the "flashes"  exciting!

Yeah like a RB to me is sparkly, just a ball of fire, where as asschers and EC seem to be a hall of mirrors, very flashy/glittery!

I guess, for me, the difference is that on a step cut, you can see the individual facets as they flash light back to your eye.
In a brilliant cut, the facets are smaller and arranged in a more complex pattern- so you can't pick out where the flashes are coming from....make sense?

I have to evaluate each on a "per diamond" basis. Everyone here knows my fave is an emerald cut.

I think the facet patterns are so different even in diamonds of the same shape.  Your past radiant and trade up radiant are a good examples. Which sparkles more? I dunno. But one facet pattern is sort of more linear while the other is sort of more crushed.  I love them both.
