Robin, I would have LOVED to see that ring too! I think if I had something like that, I'd be too afraid to wear it & would never really enjoy it. But at least, it sounds like that lady was down to earth.....didn't mind getting a little dirt under her fingersnails (or on the ring) while playing with the dogs! FOUR Great Danes!?! Geez, I wonder how much dog food she goes thru in one month!?!

30 carats? YIKES!!

I saw the Hope diamond Jan 2001, and it was in this lil' case in a room, and I about drooled! I actually have a video tape of it, as the guy I was dating at the time had his camera and I told him "VIDEO TAPE THAT".  The tape is at home at my parents house... *sigh*

Ok, I could easily get the video from my parents.. But how do I put it here? It was a VHS tape that he made from those tiny tapes...  Huh?

The most unusual diamond I have ever seen in person is the Cullinan in the Royal sceptre in the Tower of London.  It is also the biggest.  I kept stopping and staring and was prodded on by the guards all the time.  Not fair,  I could have gazed at that collection for hours and in the end after standing in line for nearly an hour I got about 5 seconds (or less) OK I am exaggerating but it was very very little time for so many jewels.

If there aren't diamonds in heaven, I'm not going!

joia, I have heard it is quite disappointing as you just don't get enough time to look.  I've also hear the rumors that those aren't even the real jewels on display.  I really don't know.  Crazy thing, I'm English and I have never seen them!

The last time I went to the Tower of London, there was hardly anyone there and the guards let my BF and I go round and round.  I couldn't believe the enormity of that diamond.  Amazing!

The strangest diamond cut I've ever seen in person is mine LOL

But oooh I have a better answer!!  I wouldn't say they were strange, but they were definitely memorable!  It isn't quite cut but I'll put it anyway Cheesy

I was talking to a mgr at a store that used to work for GIA and had been in the biz for years... anyway... I was looking at her ring (which was 10 years old) and it had two pink stones that just did not quite look like sapphires and I  knew instantly what they were... but I asked... Are those diamonds?  She said yes... and I asked, those are argyle diamonds, aren't they? and she smiled really big and said, "Wow, no one ever knows that" and of course by now I'm drooling and I said, "I bet they cost more than your center stone and the rest of your ring combined.  Each" and she said, you know your diamonds LOL!!  They were perfectly matched dark pink with just a *tinge* of purple and each was at least 1/3 if not 1/2 carat.  She said she and her husband got engaged in australia and bought them there, brought them back and even though she was doing jewelrymaking at the time she was too nervous to set them herself.  Seeing a pink *that* intense AND dispersion was just amazing... I will never forget those.  But they were both just round brilliant cuts... my cut is the weirdest cut LOL  I don't think it is weird to antique cushion lovers, but that cut isn't exactly all over the place out in the real world.

I saw a 'Ten Commandments' cut diamond in real life once...DEFINITELY  the weirdest cut I've ever seen..

It was 'tablet' shaped,  very shallow.  The lazer inscribed commandments were so small,  I couldn't see them at all with the naked eye...

Different,  anyway! Smiley

I found a picture of one:

Thanks!

What's interesting is that it didn't really look too bad in person.  It definitely looked like a diamond (albeit a less sparkly one),  and not a piece of quartz...

Wow-- that's really... weird.  How big a stone was that?  And what is it FOR?  A display piece?

This is where I found the picture:  http://www.tencommandmentsdiamond.com/

The one I saw was a pendant...

Here're the stats of the one pictured above: 1.37ct, E, VS-2,  9.24x7.26x1.94mm

You can imagine how teensy the inscription is!!
