If there aren't diamonds in heaven, I'm not going!

Okay girls (and Ace & Gemelli!), what's the most unusual cut diamond you have ever seen in person and what did you think of it?  Could be colored, white, big or small - just dive in and share your stories!  (David is going to win this hands down with his horses head.........)   Grin

Mine would probably be a Flanders cut which I got to see in person in Aachen this last December.  It looked like a 1ct but was apparently 2cts!  I couldn't believe it!  I would never buy one - I like my diamonds to look the part!

What about you guys?

The most unusual cut I ever saw was in a local jewellers. It was like nothing else I have ever seen. Can't begin to describe the shape, or the way the facets were placed. It said round brilliant on the ticket, too. Looked like a science fair project!

Uh, that isn't what you meant, is it? Sorry I'm being silly- I need to go to bed now and take fewer painkillers tomorrow!

I completely agree with you DJ.  I like my diamonds to look the part also.

The Flanders cut is beautiful, but it does look way too small! A friend of mine has one (she lives in Belgium) and it does look about half the size it says it is. It is a very lovely diamond though and if I could bear to take the size hit, I'd have one.

I feel a bit the same way about asschers actually. They always look small to me, in relation to their weight.
I cant afford one big enough, although they really are my favourite (ok, one of my favourites).

I also liked the pink harp shape (is it still there?)- how would you set that? I saw it as a pendant or a brooch.

The pink harp shape is very cool.  I see it more in a pendant.

I picked up a pair of earrings I was having fixed from my local jeweler.  He told me to close my eyes and hold out my hand (usually I don't do this sort of thing...but my husband was with me).  He slipped on a 12 carat round brilliant diamond, J VVS2!  It was HUGE!  I have never seen such a huge diamond mounted.

Honestly...it was too big!  Nobody would have believed it was real, it was so big.  He had it in his store for a gentleman who was having it made into a ring for himself!  He apparently has a size 13 ring finger...so it must have looked a bit more proportional on him.

Anyway...I wish I had had my camera to take a picture for all of you!  It was definitely a fun surprise!

Awwww, I will sit and eat  happy1 in this thread.  I have never seen an unsual cut diamond in person, just online.

Yes, the Horse's head is reall unique.  EMJ? How about using a cell phone to take a pic of the step cut marq???

12 RB would be tacky big! Sometimes large rounds look like door knobs.

I have seen pics of flanders, but what a pitty they look so small! Same with Asschers... Beautiful, but if I'm paying $X,XXX+ for an asscher, I want to be able to see it!!

I saw around a 3ct Fancy Vivid Yellowish Orange RB-it was soooo beautiful!!! Kiss  I really like the Flanders cut, but they are usually small-I know that evil shrinkage has set in on my 3 stone asscher already too Embarrassed  But I still looooove it Grin

Never seen anything exciting in boring old Utah! In the jewelry stores here, they consider a Radiant rare!

I don't know if this is the most unusual CUT, but most unusual diamond, for sure...I was in the VET'S office of all places awhile back, and as my pup and I walked out, I saw all the office staff leaning over a client's hand and making little ecstatic noises.  This, I thought to myself, will be good :-)

I should say that this clinic is in a wealthy area (a long drive from where I live <LOL>).

But still... I got the shock of my life.  A rectangular-cut stone-- not emerald, too many facets, but I don't think it could have been radiant, either, because she said it had been cut in the 1920s, and I was too tongue-tied to ask because...

Thirty carats.  THIRTY.  The setting was elaborate melee of pinks and whites in platinum, diamonds all around the basket, the shank, everywhere.  Perhaps overkill <G>.

She said she wore it all the time, and sure enough, she was all muddy from dog-wrangling, wearing (fashionable, cute) sweats.  I would have found that ring annoying to wear, I think, it was so extremely large.  Perhaps, though, I could get over my annoyance <G>.... but I couldn't even afford to INSURE that!

The woman also had four Great Danes, so I guess she liked stuff big in her world  Smiley.

 DropGob

HOLY COW!!!  THIRTY CARATS!  I can't even imagine!  I get stressed out with my 3.65ct which now sounds like a diamond CHIP compared to that monster!  I would have loved to have seen it!

I would have to say the Hope Diamond at the Smithsonian. In addition there is Asscher at the museum that is 15cts or so. It is unbelievable.

When David takes me "on tour" to the cutter's offices, there is always a jaw dropper at some point--purple pinks, dazzling diamond jewelry destined for the Oscar's. I see things there I've never seen in my life.

I would LOVE to see The Hope.  I  heard you are not allowed to linger - is that right?

I linger so long the kids have to drag me out of the gem room. Now I can't remember if I lingered before or after 911 and that museum robbery when they took "Scream". So if that's a rule, it's a new one. I linger, linger, linger. But then I'm moving from case to case to case over and over. I'm not standing at one for an hour. Too much to see!

The jewelry is incredible. Most of it is something you'd wear once to a Royal Ball or the Oscars (my invitation always gets lost) but it's fun to look at.

Maybe I'm thinking of the Crown Jewels in London.

I would spend the day in that room, WM!  The security guards would have to throw me out!

DJ, on Sundays, the gem room is PACKED
WM, I can't wait until the gem hall reopens at Carnegie in Pittsburgh, they have a grand mineral collection, not near the diamonds of Smithsonian, but a beautful collection.
