Hi All,
need some input from fellow diamond obsessives! I posted over in Introduce Yourself, so you might already know I'm about to be the very happy owner of a DBL pear pendant.

I spoke to David about a re set for my existing pendant and I need to think about the options.

It's a 1.10ct oval and beyond that, I have no info! Currently bezel set in white gold on a wheat  chain. I'm thinking I would like it to be set in a rhr - possibly with a halo?

I've (tried to ) attach a pic as it is now, and I would love any suggestions, advice etc as to what style would look best. It probably isn't the best cut diamond in the world.

I keep thinking about pink halos and my budget just isn't up to it! Please, someone talk some sense into me!! laugh

Jen

Another couple of pics - its in a WF box, but it isn't from WF (I'm adding this because they might otherwise sue me - it is not the best quality stone ever!!)

I love the shape of that oval, it's almost cushion-ish but maybe that's the bezel fooling me??

My first thought was also "Pink Halo". Here's a picture of my first ER. It was beautiful but I'll not get into why I don't have it now...I'll just say "EXTREMELY negative associations with the center stone that I was presented with at our engagement" and leave it at that. Anyway...I loved the setting with the oval center. It was rose gold with white melee so it would be cheaper than pink diamonds but it really was beautiful. The rose gold made the center and the melee just POP!!!

Oh, that is lovely. I'm so sorry it had a negative association for you though. I hope you now have something you love that makes you smile everytime you look at it.

My ering is an emerald cut solitaire, so I'd like my oval rhr to be something a bit different. I love your pink halo.

Jen, have you talked to David about a halo with the brownish pink melee?  It will save you some cash and still look very pink.  Snooper has the brownish pinks in her new halo and she is bowled over by them.

If you decide against a halo, it would look stunning set E/W somehow too.

Jen, as somone who is about to call David to discuss an oval in a halo I say go for the halo!!!  I think that it would look lovely in a pink halo.  And, David has some photos up in another thread that shows both the brownish pink and pink halo.  I will see if I can put in the link for you!  And, I think that it looks like a very pretty stone:)

I'm going to go against the mold on this one and vote for no halo.  If I had such a lovely oval, I would do an east west setting with a little split shank near the stone.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I am indecisive, to be sure, but I think I'm now down to three options (from about 3 million, so progress of a sort!).

1. Brownish pink halo
2. White halo
3. e/w setting, no halo, white pave band

I always go for white metal because it looks better with my skin tones (I'm so pale I'm almost blue), so maybe options 2 or 3 would be best. But I just keep on looking back to those brownish pink halos. Mmm.

I love, love love the split shank designs and that was actually my first thought. However, I have quite short fingers and realistically I can't see that looking great on me.

Also, what do you all think about bezel v prongs for a centre stone in a halo?

Thanks again for the help - this is great!

Jen I am with you on the blue thing!  I think it's a Brit problem!  We're always the ones burning up like lobsters on the beaches in Tenerife!

I have 2 of the legacy halo rings: 1 all in white gold and 1 all in rose gold (I am awaiting delivery of the rose gold one).  Both are bezel set as I prefer that look.  David once mentioned to me that bezels can make a stone look smaller though.  Still, that halo will increase the size perception so I suppose that balances itself out in the end.  I'm not concerned about the color of the rose gold against my skin and I did opt for all white melee so as not to overdo the pink.  I'll happily keep you posted on how it looks with my pasty British sk.......I mean, my beautiful English Rose complexion!

One other thing, I believe that to have the stone bezel set, it has to fit well into a stock mounting.  Otherwise it will have to be custom built and the price jumps.  I think there is more leeway with prongs.  I could be wrong so it is worth checking with David for sure.

Ah - makes sense about the custom bezel - prongs might be the answer. Jewellk thought the stone looked a little bit like a cushion, and I think so too, now that I look at it again. It might not fit too well in a stock setting with a bezel. It's an odd little stone, I bought it on impulse! It has a honkin great black inclusion under a loupe, but without the loupe, I can't spot it at all. It doesn't seem to be particularly well cut, but it gives lovely flashes of colour. Something about it appealled to me but I haven't ever been happy with the setting. I really want to see David work his magic on this one, like I want to see someone give Ugly Betty a makeover! (ok, I'm shallow!) laugh

As for the pale blue skin / English rose complexion, If I sat on a beach, I would just fry! Doesn't always stop us though, does it! I would love to hear how your rose gold ring turns out - please post pics, and I hope you love it when it arrives.

Sounds like you got some great advice.  I love your pendant.  What are you going to do with the rest of the pendant once you remove the oval?   I have considered setting my pear into a pendant like that.   Just beautiful!~Ronda

Jen..an all white halo in white gold would be beautiful! It would make your stone look even larger. Also, I 've heard that oval and rectangular stones set N/S help elongate fingers!

Firstly, I really like your pendandt the way it is!! But then it's new to me. lol  Grin

I think it would look nice in any of the setting options you mentioned above, but I do think
I would probably choose between either a split shank or the halo with prong center type setting.

You know, I never thought about what to do with the pendant once the diamond was removed. Good question! My best friend's daughter will be 16 later this year, so maybe it could be a birthday gift in some form. Her birthstone is sapphire, but she already has a really pretty sapphire pendant (lucky kid!). I need to ask David about this, but I wonder, would it be possible to take the link off the bottom of the little round diamond and polish it so that it is a tiny diamond pendant? Almost like DBTY. That would be quite a sweet little gift if it could be done.

DiamondLady - thank you! I like it too, but it's having to move over to make room for a DBL pear (are you all sick of hearing about my pear yet??).

Klienkath -that setting speaks to me - thanks!

Jewellk - my ering is set north/south and I think you're right.  My hand looks better with my ring on it. Diamonds as part of a beauty regime anyone? A new excuse for buying rings!

Glad that you like it!  There are many legacy owners here of different shapes.  And, I think that I am about to get an oval in that same setting Smiley

Very true kk - and each one is different:

CH - Round, all white prong set
GL - Round, all white bezel set
Ronda - FBY cushion, white setting & melee
Rhonda - Light yellow radiant, white setting & melee
Snooper - White EC, pink halo, white shank
DJ - FDOB asscher, white setting & melee/white pear, pink gold setting & white melee
kk - soon to be: FBGY oval, yellow setting & white melee
jewellk - soon to be: Light yellow radiant, white setting & melee

Rhonda and Jewel will be ring twins!  I for one just LOVE this setting and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

Wouldn't that be great!  No, no-one has a princess or a marquise (funky weird cuts such as 'flanders' just don't count!).  Having said that, I'm not sure how this style would look with a princess.  I'm sure if it can be made with a pear, it can be made with a marquise.  That would be interesting......

Yeah...I am not sure what it would look like with those cuts.  I am not sure that it would work well with a marquise  Huh?

You know, I thought that at first and then I really thought about it - I think it might be pretty cool.  If Rhonda is around, I bet she could make one up in photoshop by mirror imaging the pears pointed end (am I making sense?!).  I'll post a pic and see if Rhonda would be so kind as to help us.

Hi All!
It's so nice to hear everyone's ideas! It really means a lot to me, and the way we develop new pieces.

DJ brought up a very good point about a the ring fitting the diamond.
That's the down-side of using stock settings.
Sometimes- like a 1.72 Black Coffee Asscher we once had Wink- the stock piece fits so well, it's indisinguishable from a custom made jobbie.
We actually have some leeway with a bezel- IF the parts for the stone's shape and general size.

Let's talk about one of my faves-  split shank halos.
Here's one we did last week- I love the way it came out.
We customized a stock part with some strategic yellow gold parts.
The result: looks like a custom made ring.

We offer this ring, in 14karat gold, for $1499

Anyway- the point is- we'd need to charge at least $700 more to make the ring ... a different shape.
In other words-  if the oval is North South, making it E-W requiires us to custom make the entire ring.
Some things can be altered- such as adding yellow gold prongs, or a bezel- some things can't.
