I'd like to hear your thoughts about "grey" diamonds.  As we all know, except for D - E diamonds, most "white" diamonds have some color, usually it's in the yellow range and sometimes it's brown or grey.

In the near colorless range, my opinion is that subtle yellow shades add a sense of warmth, often pleasant to my eyes.

I was thinking about "grey" because yesterday I was in a pawn shop and saw a simple vintage ring, a low-set diamond, probably around .60 carats, VS1 in a white gold double-pronged illusion setting mounted on a narrow band yellow gold shank, very pretty setting and tempting.  It is an Old European Cut.  Some of these stones are called "high silver," but this one I think went just a little beyond that, it looked grey.

Somehow, unlike the yellow shades, I find the grey to be disturbing, like it almost looks a bit dirty.  Hard to say, but I guess the stone is in the K-L range.

Any thoughts or opinions on this subject?

Not sure what your question is, Geena. Fancy grey diamonds exist - I don't find them particularly exciting, but they are there. Most natural blue diamonds have a grey mask - though that is often taken as part of the hue and the Hope diamond is called a "deep blue" although in a sapphire or spinel that would be not a particularly desirable colour.

As usual, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Not very illuminating, is it?

Hi All!
An interesting question!
Here's a diamond GIA graded "Natural Light Grey"

This is pretty rare- the diamond actually has some grey color.
It sounds as though you saw a dull diamond. When a diamond is dull and lifeless, it can look grey.
This can be due to a large amount of imperfection, or cloudiness.
Such diamonds are very cheap- or should be!

Hope this helps!

By the way- Geena used a term "high silver"- which is likely referring to the term "Top silver"
"Top Silver" refers to diamonds of J-K-L color with a warmer yellow tint you described Geena.
For sone reason,  when we're speaking "diamond-ese" the word silver means yellow

Thanks, you are right: it is "top silver." Anyway, the diamond I saw had excellent clarity- at least VS possibly VVS and I definitely wouldn't call it a fancy grey.  Rather, it looked like a diamond that had an average to good cut for an OEC with a grey color that is in the near-colorless range or just beyond it (into the L,K possibly M range).
Assessment, by myself, an amateur, viewing a stone in its setting.

??

Any more comments knowing that? ...and thanks much for your previous replies.  Smiley

Bear in mind that the gray colour may have nothing to do with clarity.

It is tempting to assume that a "fancy grey" mush be a mixture of black (carbon) and white, but it is not. Minute amounts of boron in the crystal structure may give a blue-gray tint (with the gray being dominant at very low boron content) without having any inclusion at all.

I very much like the grey, is it R2316? The colour stands separate from its clarity.
Am I wishing too much by saving up for a larger grey, ie do they climb the blue price list? Hopefully nobody else likes grey given that Geena found one disturbing.  evil7

( anyone got that red beauty of a spinel, it seems to have vanished ? )

To clarify, I'd probably like the looks of a fancy grey (I've never seen one in person).  What I find disturbing is when a diamond is in or near the near-colorless range, and I see grey when I want to see white.  Wink

Hey D - Can you find a picture of that gray marquise ring?  I think it sold 1.5 - 2 years ago, but I'm not sure.  I think the sides might have been pears... not sure.

I really liked the look of that ring!

OK - I got off my lazy bum and found them myself.  Grin
David's far more efficient at finding these old photos, but I guess I can hold my own.  Wink

I really liked this ring and will admit to being a wee bit sad when it sold.

I was just thinking of that one Annie - that was beautiful.  The colour is just great - I'm a massive fan of grey stones.

Was there a grey EC at one point?  Or am I making that up?

There was a gray emerald cut with yellow radiant cut side stones. I remember considering it when picking out my em cut ring.

Can someone please help me determine what color diamond I have here. It changes colors depending on where I am. It's white outside in the sun, dark grey inside in not so lit areas and a lighter grey in a well lit room. Do I have a grey diamond? I read that some blue diamonds throw off a grey tint. Yet in the sun as I said it's very white and clear.
Does anyone have any idea what color grading scale it would be on?

Hi sh3rry! Welcome to CDi!

It's really impossible to say much- taking photos of diamonds is not all that easy!

Is there any info at all from where you bought it?
Even an appraisal or an EGL report might tell us...something....

Hello sh3rry! What a lovely, classic wedding set you have there.

Maybe if you know where the diamond was bought, you could ask there about the colour grade? Since you own it (and presumably love it) I wouldn't get too hung up on the grading, just enjoy the sparkle!

I think it's gorgeous! Nice way to add even more sparkle to the set without overpowering the solitaire.

Hmm. Your husband seems to have the right idea. Maybe get him to phone David and see about some earrings and jackets to compliment the look? Grin Well, if you don't ask....
