You know, those clear plastic tubing things do work pretty well, and you can find them at cheap department stores (ok, ok, wal-mart, k-mart, target...)   and you can also get them at claire's or afterthoughts (if any of you dare go in any of these places anyway)  Wink

It's coming off everywhere else, but I'm now beginning to have a distant memory of being just over 8 st 7lbs, between around ages 17 and 22. Even then, I am now starting to recall, I had hefty, stout looking thighs. I had wiped that out of my memory, but it's creeping back...

Ah well, they're all me, gotta love em! Grin

No kidding emj! When I was younger, I used to like their jewelry because it was cheap and trendy.....    NO MORE! I like diamonds now...

Oh... the tubies are cheap, too     only $1-2 for a bunch of different sizes and kinds, they have round ones, flat ones, long and short ones, etc. to fit you comfortably, and I do have some laying around my house somewhere that I bought and did use at one point in time, but I think they worked really well.

I love Claire's. I once found a pair of earrings that I loved so much I had recreated in sapphire and diamond (well, they will be finished one day. Bit of a long story!). I'll look for some little tubes at the weekend. Great tip, thanks.

Um, back to the eternity band issue -- David-please help. I got a substantial diamond/plat band less than a year ago (all the way round) and by now some of the stones are loose. When I bought it, I was told to have prongs checked as this could happen.

Is this true - is loose stones something that will happen every 6-9 months or so?? I wear my ring day and night, so maybe less wearing would help?

Should I be checking for any potential problems in the repair?

Thanks for any advice/info,
Titania

Hi Titania,
Did the seller agree to take any responsibility should the stones come loose? My felling is , they should.

While it's true that "all the way around" rings may be a bit more prone to stones loosening, it's certainly NOT a given- nor should anyone be expected to pay thousands of dollars for a ring to have it become unstable in a matter of months.

What's the seller saying?

Well, I called them and they say to just bring it in and they will fix while I wait. They say it is typical for a shared-prong eternity band, if worn all the time as I do, for stones to become loose over time and should be checked every so often.

They're not charging me for this (I would have been very upset if they were), but I'm concerned that this could become an ongoing worry. I was hoping for an anxiety-free ring, but maybe they don't exist, really.

Thank you for responding to my question - I appreciate it!

Hi Titania,
I'd say that if you have to have this done again in the next year- I'd make a pitch for a new ring.
They may or may not give it to you- however it's NOT unreasonable to expect better performance than you're apparently getting.
Of course one needs to be careful when wearing a ring- but it should NOT be a constant worry ( IMO)

That's reasonable to me -- I doubt, however, these people will agree!

They're a good-sized family-run outfit in Boston's jewelry exchange, with a good reputation. It would be a tough negotiation to get a new ring.

But I hear you, and I imagine it's their fault and not mine if the stones are prone to loosening every few months. I'll see what the next few months bring.

Thanks again for your very valuable input!!!

I'd more scared of wearing a ring if the stones kept falling out.  I had that happen once with a band, and eventually they had to remake it (not dbl, this was before I knew of DBL!)

But it's very scary none the less!

Fortunately the stones haven't fallen out - I just noticed a rattling a few weeks ago and put it away til I can get to the jewelers. If they fell out, I'd freak out!

I wish I'd known of David prior to getting the ring. It was only after I became smitten with sparklies that I found similar maniacs on line!! Now I feel I have a personal jeweler to consult, even though I've yet to buy DBL (although I check the stuff every day...sigh).

Some time, hubby and I will drive down to the City to check out the goods in person! I'll time it with a birthday or somesuch. Maybe a half-birthday?

I'm bad - we've never insured my jewelry. Do most of you guys get your stuff insured? We just lock stuff away in our safe when traveling.

I have four items insured with State Farm, who covers my other "stuff" (house, cars).  It's $250-$300 a year for about $20K worth of coverage.

DH and I were just talking about this last night-- I asked if he thought I should cancel the coverage on some of the items.  His reasoning was that having the insurance enabled me to enjoy my jewelry worry-free.

For instance, I wore all my "good" pieces on my trip last weekend.  DH said, "If someone tries to rob you, just GIVE THEM YOUR JEWELRY!"  I said, "No worries; they're insured.  Then I could get bigger ones."

So, since I'm a chronic worrier, it's been worth it for me.

I found that you have to be careful with insurance that covers other things as well - my stuff was insured under my house contents and building policy. If the house burned down, the value of the sparklies would be such that I might not have enough cash to replace them and the house! Every time I get a new piece (or any other belonging, if it's over £1k, I add to the total cover. They don't always warn you, but there is almost always an upper limit to the cover provided. In the UK, anyway! It's not just "we'll replace all your stuff, however much you have" unfortunately!

Been meaning to post and ask about insurance, so I'm glad this discussion started.  I recently sent off my asscher for its remake and wanted to insure it for its replacement value.  I have a personal articles policy under my homeowners insurance, which I've used principally to insure the art I own.  I was shocked to find out that the premium quoted was a whopping 3% of the replacement value of my ring and then further shocked to hear that if my ring were lost, damaged or stolen, I would either have to accept a replacement stone from their network of jewelers OR a cash out of approximately 33% of the replacement.  The latter, I'm sure, is supposed to act as a disincentive to opt for the cash out.

I've now called 2 other companies and basically was told similar things and the premium rate was about the same.  I  also looked into Jewelers Mutual Insurance company, but again, rates are similar.  So do any of you use a reputable insurance company that has better rates and options?
