Anyone else here get really cheesed off with the constant comment especially with diamonds being 'en vogue' of recent "Its not real, is it?"

Since its becoming more acceptable for guys to wear stones and everyone and their dog are sporting CZ's and whatever else rubbish.
I get this often with my round brilliant cut diamond stud.

It gets on my nerves TBH.

Hmmm. I guess I never thought of that pip. I am never asked that question. But then I'm female and I'm much older than snooper. I guess just tell them yes, it is real.

Hi Pip,
I can't imagine myself ever asking someone if "it's real".  I think that would just be so rude of me.  If someone asked me that, I'd just reply with the truth.  I can see where it'd get under one's skin by hearing that a lot.

I don't really get asked that but I do think a lot of people think my jewels aren't real anyway.  Plus, being big into colored diamonds, I don't think most people would even guess some of my pieces were diamonds.  I have had people ask "What stone is that?" and then seen their eyes get real big when I tell them it's a diamond, but to flat out ask me if it's fake?  No, and I would consider that terribly rude too.  Still, my reaction would be a big laugh and then, "I hope the muggers all think so!"

My mother on a cruise got better(worse) than that she got a long lecture about her ring and that if it had been real diamonds it would have been worth a lot of money LOL.  My mother said that she just nodded and thanked the "kind"  lady and she told me that  sometimes it is better for people to think your jewellery is fake.....

I once did the opposite Joia. I was a teenager and had a weekend part time job and " borrowed " one of my Mother`s cocktail bling rings which was made of fake stones and was gold plated. They were kind of popular back in the early 60`s.
My boss was a strong Christian woman who seemed to dislike anything nice, feminine, didn`t wear jewellery, makeup or even skirts and she commented that such a diamond ring would cost enough to feed a 3rd world country and how disgraceful it was to be so materialistic.
I sighed right from the bottom of my teenage boots and said " Madam the ring is fake but if you think the 4 quid will save a country then you`re welcome to have it ! "
Guess she didn`t like kids either ....

I've heard of people being reminded that they could have used the money better (donations, etc) but there will always be someone who has to be a downer in situations.  I could care less if people judge me on how I spend my money, but I know, even with other materialistic items, people can judge.  I do donate to 2 organizations monthly so I have no regrets Smiley

Very Pretty Indeed!      PIP..... ditto on what other's have said.   Although it is rude for someone to ask,  I just have never taken offense to it.  Some people don't know diamonds the way that we do and it is often those whom have to ask if they are real!  Wink

What are the closest fakes to actual diamonds? Some that i have seen are really dazzling and almost identical.
Is it lab created ones which are synthetically grown?

Well, technically lab diamonds are diamonds, but they aren't as cool to me because the earth didn't make them.

Lab diamonds are exactly the same chemically as an earth-mined diamond. But, they are also D, VVS1, so if you don't make any money you're not fooling anyone! I actually bought a lab-made diamond ring (it's pretty, I'd post pics, but I don't think it's interesting to anyone since it's not real in our books)        and obviously it could be real, but the stone is like a 1.5 carat radiant with a halo and really really fancy scrolling under the crown, and a real ring like that would cost me over $10k, and I'm just a young college student, so everyone knew it was fake anyway. I've never seen any real diamonds, but I have to say I might have gotten a cz or something, because I never see any colored light come out of it!

An appropriate response (particularly if you know the answer, and it's anything besides a subcompact or an old beater) would be "And what do you drive, dear?"

MANY people spend more money than needed on vehicles, but for some reason having a luxury car doesn't invoke the same spite,  even though the car will be probably be junk in 20 years - purely consumed.  The diamonds are at least capable of holding some value, and definitely will be around as heirlooms.

Its like with expensive clothes, if i know its a fake then it makes me one to wear them. The same with diamonds, i cant bear to think that i would wear a CZ or similar.

I work for a store that sells their goods on TV and they have a TM CZ line. You wouldn't believe the huge amount of business that line alone does! We actually get in a lot of well-to-do women who are going on vacation or on a cruise and they purchase our line so they don't have to bring their "real" stuff. That way if something happens or it gets stolen then the loss won't be so huge!

BigRed that is how I have a large cz (my only one) it was a copy of my number 2 engagement ring and when I broke it off, with a bang, I had the cz copy as a keepsake.  I would rather have had the real one though, this thing is in my jewel box just when I want to get myself into a bad mood.....LOL

I'm not picky about clothes at all, but I do like my purses to be "real".  I can't stand the fakes...lol.  I do love nice real diamonds, but I'd still wear a pretty fake sometimes too!

I don't think anything less of anyone who wears CZ, but personally, I'd rather save and save and buy the real thing... Same with purses, I feel ya Madora!!!

Awestruck~

I saw that ring, too.  I love the contrast between the white and the pinks.  Those definitely don't have any brown in them, do they?

I don't buy fake purses because so many terrible things in the world are funded through their production (child labor, terrorism, etc), but I think CZs are fine.  Some people cannot afford the real thing (or don't want to).

I cannot think of ever being asked if my jewelry was real, but I would not take offense.  I do get asked if my stone is a diamond, because many people have never seen a yellow one.  I love having something rare to share!

i think there may be a regional divide, in asking questions about a stone. because here in texas i have never known anyone to get upset or offended if asked about their ring.    but i have observed new englanders and new yorker/new jersey area people really get their panties in a wad over this issue.

hell, down here, if you ask about a ring, you'll get a ten minute story or "Oh hunney, it's a fake!"

i've discovered that if i really like someone's ring, in friendly texas, all i have to do is say "oh, your ring is lovely, tell me about it!"  i vibe them out first, though.

one time i was in walmart and there were three middle aged women in a stuck line in the electronics department.  we were all wearing very dated YG jools from the 80s and 90's but noticeable/larger diamonds. turned into a delightful 20 minutes or so in the jool admiration society.  " Oh, hunney this is from my first boyfriend, this is from the ex husband may he rot in peace....its a 2 carat h vs1 from ...."

i teach high school chemisty in the 'hood and my students think i am wearing fakes. i told them once my diamonds were real.  probably not a good idea.

i hate hate hate CZs because after 6 months, in my opinion, they look bad.  edited to add: i also get annoyed on ebay when people list cz's as "lab created diamonds".

Why is that? They look good for a few weeks, then dull and fake. (CZ, I mean!)

Your students must have a great deal of respect for you, since you still have the diamonds! Where I work, the only thing that keeps them on my hand is the certain belief that they are CZ!
