Mindi you are so beautiful!  I love both dresses!

Annie, that lavendar one your mom is using as a model is my absolute favorite of all posted!  I also really like the white one that Bigred posted last.  I agree that it may not be a bad idea to spend $100 or so on a back up, especially if you can find one you would wear for another occasion.

You know, since it is such a shame that most of us only wear our wedding dresses once, I think that whenever we finally converge on the DBL offices in NY we should all do so in our gowns!  OMG!  How are we not crazy enough already?Huh?? boobban

Thank you GL Smiley

That would be too funny! They'd load us all up in a paddy wagon and take us away!!

Annie..I meant to say earlier that we made the dress out of muslin intially (especially since we were combining two patterns). We marked up the muslin, took it all apart, then used the muslin as the pattern to cut the dress fabric. I had a book that described how to do it, it was pretty helpful but there may be better ones out there. It was called "Bridal Couture"

Thanks for all of the support guys.  bighug

I wish I could say that I'm now perfectly happy with the situation, but I just can't.  I went from not being worried much at all about the dress to being incredibly nervous about the whole situation.

I'm just afraid that even if it turns out perfect, I'm still not going to be happy because I had no say in the matter of picking out my own dress.  I haven't even seen the pattern yet, and it's like it's a completely done deal!  I know I'm probably being over emotional about the whole thing.  I didn't care all that much about the dress to start with, so why should I now?  My mom's just trying to do the best thing for me, and I should be appreciative, but I really feel left out of the process.   Cry

Sorry to be a downer ladies.

Anne you are not and have never been a downer.     YOu are so great with words that I would just ask your mom to give you a little "creative" control on the dress.    It is a lovely and sentimental guesture for your mom to make your dress, however,  I know most girls when they were little always dreamed of looking like a princess on there wedding day.    I really like the idea of having a "back up" dress.  You can tell your mom something like...oh, I thought this would be perfect for the reception.

Mindi............you look gorgeous!  I love the black and white pic and the dresses too!~Ronda

Annie...you are not being a downer!!! It's your wedding and you should wear the dress that you want!!! I think alot of women go through their mothers trying to help a little too much for their weddings. My mom did the same thing. It was hard at first, since she gave DH and I some money to help with the wedding costs (although DH and I paid for the majority of it), but it was enough that I wanted her to be involved and didn't want to hurt her feelings by disagreeing with her about certain things. It worked out overall, and actually, I think we have a much better relationship because of it. It forced us to talk about things and discuss them thoroughly before making decisions. I'm sure you'll find a way to make it work out, but I agree with Ronda...having a back-up dress is a good idea! How about finding out about the return policies of some of the places that have the dresses you like? It might be worth the shipping costs to order one, try it on and keep it "just in case" then return it if you don't use it.

Annie, you REALLY need to log into indiebride.com/kvetch there are a ton of women who aren't "The Knot" sort who have Great ideas for dresses, and dealing with relatives.

My favorite sig on there is "This wedding is brought to you by the word NO"
Your and your FH's wedding. This is not your mom's wedding. You pick.

Annie, I like the idea of having back up dress. Just in case.
Since the dress you want is not a traditional wedding dress anyway, You can use it for other occasions if you decide to wear you mom dress for the wedding.  Smiley

Oh Annie, I think that is such a sweet thing for your mom to do but I can see how it might get a little awkward.  It will probably pay to be a little upfront with her now.  Just tell her what you've told us - that you love that she wants to make a dress for you but you are feeling left out and want some say in the most important dress of your life.

Everyone is right - well intentioned mothers can come across as hard-nosed dictators when it comes to their daughters' weddings!   Grin

They are all right Annie! This is your day so make sure your mom lets you in on the style dress she is trying to make and help chose the fabric and definitely have a back-up just in case!

Sorry to hear of your worries Annie. I'm sure your Mom has good intentions with making your dress---and that's so sweet of her to offer. It would be such a sentimental dress if she made it too. I'm sure your Mom is just trying to take some of the stress off of you (weddings are STRESSFUL anyway!)....just tell her how you feel. It's always better when you're honest & open about things. I really hope it all works out. But I'd definitely get a back-up dress just in case.

Mindi, you never told me you're a SUPER MODEL!!!!! You are one gorgeous gal! You could seriously be a model! You are 5'11" right? I love both of your dresses too. Very, very pretty & elegant....but something you could wear again when you go out.

My wedding dress is like a big POOFY Cinderella dress (definitely a one time only dress)........but hey, GracefulLion, if my hubby agreed to buy me a new ring when we all meet up in NY, I WOULD WEAR IT!!!! He**, I'll go naked for a new ring!!!!

You know what, Annie? You are going to look beautiful in the dress that your mom makes. Ok, call me crazy lady, but I kinda have this image in my head - I read this thread last night and I actually dreamed about it. I have the strongest feeling that you will look (and more importantly, feel) like the most beautiful woman in creation when you take your vows. Wink

I hope you are planning on posting an awful lot of pics!

Thanks so much guys.  It makes me feel good to know that I have so many people here behind me.  You're all so sweet.   Kiss

Jen - I can't believe you had a dream about it.  Your post really calmed me actually.

I'm sure everything will be fine.  I'm not going to stress about it anymore.  The whole idea of our wedding was to be relaxed and laid back, and I'm going to take it to heart.

Whatever happens, happens!

Annie,
You're taking such a cool approach! Kudos to you for staying out of major league stress.

My wedding planning was much the same. We planned it in three months.  I had loving support from my MOH, my parents and DH and the whole thing was a fantastic experience. Yours will be too, I just know it! DH and I made our cake (we took lessons first!) and 60 minature versions as favours. Sometimes I still wake screaming in the night, from a dream of 60 tiny cakes waiting to be iced. That was the only bit I wouldn't do again!

My MOH did my flowers, and I was a little nervous at first but when I saw them, WOW! The whole church was filled with roses and each arrangement had something from our garden in it. She did us proud, and your mom will do you proud too!

Looking forward to regular updates Annie!

That's a great way to look at it Annie...After all, the most important thing about the day is that you and FH are getting married and committing to spending the rest of your lives together. He's not going to give a rats a** what you wear, heck, he'd probably prefer you wear nothing at all  Grin!!! You're going to look gorgeous no matter what because the happiness that you feel about marrying your man will be shining through and you will be the most beautiful woman in the world!!

The idea of a back up dress is a good one.  I love the dress that your mother is thinking of making and if she is a perfectionist it should be great.
The e-bay site would be great for the back up dress I think as long as you can wear it again.  I quite agree with less on the dress more on the diamond.  I am sure you will look absolutely beautiful.
Now I have been trying to think of a film where the bride was given her mother-in-law´s dress to wear and she ended up bolting or something, it is driving me nuts.  Please anyone know which film it was?

Was it Monster-In-Law with Jane Fonda & Jennifer Lopez?? I remember they had some kind of fight over dresses.

Thanks for checking in DJ.  Progress is slow, but it's being made none the less.  I like the color of the fabric, and the pattern (with some slight modifications) looks nice.  I'm staying positive about the whole deal, and I think it will turn out well.
