Ok the pendant hunt is over. My dress has just 3 crystal flowers down one side of the bodice and yesterday we were shopping in town and I found a pendant which I really liked. It`s 3 diamond daisies in a row, each of them move independantly and they arent rigidly attached to each other so they move when I move. I already have a pair of earrings which are almost indentical so that saved me some money too.
The pic is poor quality because it`s dull and rainy here in the UK so I couldn`t capture the sparkle off these guys.

I watched tonight`s episode of My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding and saw something I`ve never seen nor heard of before. When the bride and groom were about to exchange rings an owl flew over the congregation and delivered the wedding rings to the bride and groom.
It resembled a combination of Gypsy wedding meets Harry Potter !
Having said that, I`ve heard of pet dogs, horses and other animals attending their owners weddings and I believe Robbie Williams ( AKA band member of Take That ) wife  Ayda had their pet dogs as bridesmaids.
Crazy !

I really, really wanted to go to my wedding on a horse. Mine died the previous year, but I was going to use his stablemate. It just wasn't practical - I can sit sidesaddle, which would have been perfect, and my own horse was great with a sidesaddle, but the other horse was having none of it. I didn't see it working, especially with a big puffy dress added into the mix.  laugh

Hey Jen arriving on a horse isn`t too bad but would you have had him standing beside you during the ceremony lol ?
GIA how are you feeling ? Just over a week to the big day. Are you excited ? I hope you`re relaxed and enjoying yourself.
I`m on a trip South next month, also at the beginning of May and then a final visit in August to sort out my grandchildrens flowergirl outfits, shoes and accessories etc. My daughter in law is now working full time so I`m trying to sort things long distance and it makes it doubly hard because my son`s in the Army so I have to fit my trips around him being away from home.
I ordered their dresses deliberately on the large side so when I visit we`ll visit a local dressmaker who`ll deal with any alterations and we`ll go choose their shoes.
I took MR Awestruck`s grand daughters to be re measured last week and one of them has grown an inch and a half in just 6 weeks. Thankfully all of their dresses have been ordered on the large side too !
This week I`ve ordered reception flowers. My niece was supposedly doing them but she`s since discovered she`s pregnant with her 3rd baby and is due to give birth just a couple of weeks before the wedding.
Oh and we`ve got our wedding bands. Both of them are just plain bands, mine`s platinum and Mr Awestruck`s is yellow gold. Both of us needed heavy weight because neither of us are fit for delicate jewellery of any kind especially if it`s something we`ll wear continuously.

I think the Minister of the ancient parish church may have had a view on taking the horse inside...

Beautiful pendant, Lynne.  I can see you in my mind's eye in white diamonds and crystals.  How lovely you will be.

And Maggie - our thoughts and prayers are with you as you approach your final week, pre-wedding.  Hope all is on track, on schedule, and moving smoothly forward for you.  I can only hope that you'll build your own thread once all the hoopla is over and you have time again just to breathe.  We surely would love to share a few of your special moments.

We`ve all followed this thread and we`ve seen some stunningly beautiful dresses and some weird and wacky ones too.
Most of us have been lucky enough to choose and afford the dress of our dreams but whilst I was watching the BBC news this morning there was a news article where they set someone the challenge of either buying or creating a wedding dress for just £10 ( $16 ) and she did it, not once but 3 times over.
Some people may have strong green beliefs and I`ve noticed a rise in green websites offering recycled fabrics or wedding dresses made from "green " fabrics. Other people may simply want an off the wall dress made from something unusual or vintage fabric and some people may either simply choose not to spend a large part of their budget on the dress or simply can`t afford to.
The 3 dresses this morning consisted of one made from a pair of damask curtains, another made from several items of clothing from a charity shop which had been taken apart and then re made as a dress and a dress which had been found on a street market and revamped.
It got me thinking about how times had changed because when I married for the 1st time in 1973 it was nothing unusual for wedding dresses to be passed through families or borrowed by friends. My own wedding dress which was new was later used by my sister to make a dress for my young niece to wear in a Church parade.
My parents married in 1941 during the height of the War and my Mother`s dress was made from a parachute silk because wedding dresses were impossible to buy in those years.
Does anybody know of someone who`se had a really unusual dress, possibly sourced from somewhere unusual or someone who wore something completely out of the norm ? Maybe you know of someone who`se worn a dress passed from generation to generation or who`se had an ingenious way of dressing for a bargain price.

I don't know if it counts, but my first (and second) wedding dress was actually a tea gown of my grandmother's on my father's side.  It was found in a barrel of old clothes that some of my young cousins used for dress-up play.  I rescued it when I was 15 and repaired a few tears and rewove some of the small areas that had been badly ripped as my hand sewing skills improved.  I had the silk lace insert at the neckline replaced prior to the first wedding. The gown is Victorian, with exquiste embroidery, white on white, of course, and very delicate cutwork in panels down the front of the dress.  You can see some of the cutworkon the sleeve and the raised waist. The back has a very small demi-train, which could clip up in a bustle with garlands of flowers down the back and along the hem.

Just as an FYI, I married the same man twice.  I kept hoping that his addiction was well in hand only to be cast down again.  Still, he is a wonderful man, when sober, and I wish him all the best.  Most of the jokes I post come from him.  After 20 years, the friendship remains, and my Nicole is his daughter by his first wife.  First wedding, I was scared to death.  We were married at the Chapel of the West in Las Vegas.  My Mom was my matron of honor back '87.

The picture is from our second wedding which occurred in our backyard in '94.  I was much more relaxed that time. heheheh.

Gorgeous pendant!!!!

All this talk has me wondering if I should find a good place to donate my wedding dress.  Or offer it super cheap.  Bad thing is I am short and it wouldn't fit many well.  But it was hand made with special lace that we bought in another country.

I don't have a daughter and even then unless she's short it wouldn't work anyway.  We already made a baptismal gown made out of the lace we bought.  So I have that part.

I wonder where I could take it so that maybe some shorty bride could use it (I was in flats and I am 5' tall)

clgwli, if the dress still fits you, have you considered doing a "trash the dress" photo shoot? You would get another use from the dress (sort of), some stunning pictures, and more space in your closet.

I'm significantly smaller than I was over a decade ago... like 50 pounds smaller so I am sure the dress won't fit at all.  I ought to dig it out though just to see how it fits.  It's in a box in a huge closet we have so not a huge deal to store it at least.

Only other thing I could think to do would be see if we could alter it down and dye it a golden color.  At least dye the lace something like that.  The satin beneath is a light ivory to set off the embroidered organza lace.  Then shorten the sleeves and length to wear it again?

I'd so have to ask my cousin, but I am not sure that the organza is dyeable?  I have some sample pieces left over from before the wedding so I could test run it.

This thread sparked me to dig out my wedding dress and look at it.  I forgot about seaming in the front so altering this dress to make it casual would not work well.

The thing is huge on me.  Really huge as I thought and actually it made me cry.  I almost wish I could have a "do over" and find a dress that I would love for ages.  I didn't like myself physically back then so I do wish I could do it all again and try to find a dress that would be less about me "hiding" and more about style.

Oh well.  I think donating it is a good option.  I'll have to see what others do with their dresses online and maybe help out someone in need.

AH2 I love your dress and the love and history which went into it.
Squigs have a look at this site, you may be interested in donating your dress to them
www.makingmemories.org
When you think about it there must be hundreds of wedding dresses hiding in closets and which will never be worn ever again.
I`ve found a UK charity which sends donated wedding dresses to Africa, hires them cheaply to African brides who wouldn`t normally be able to afford a wedding dress and then the money raised is used to help local AIDS programmes.

Abi Parker from Windsor in Berkshire has set up a Wedding Dress Hire Shop in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. It offers employment for local women who would otherwise have to fend for themselves, and provides a great service for women hoping to be married in a proper wedding dress, which normally is unheard of in small villages where there is hardly any provision for staple things, never mind wedding clothes. If you can find it in your heart to donate your wedding dress to this wonderful cause, Abi will ensure that it is shipped over to Africa to help raise funds and make bridal dreams come true. Abi is going back to Zambia in August so don’t delay - make sure your second-hand dress is going with her!

Read all about it here: http://news.bbc.co.u.../england/8510198.stm

Contact viv@ribbonsandpearls.co.uk for details of how to get it to Abi, or contact Abi Parker directly on info@asap-africa.org.uk

Awestruck you are awesome!!  I will have to check those places out and see if I can donate.  If not I'll google around to see if I can find other places.

I admit I like my dress a lot.  But I chose the style to hide my shape.  I was beautifully made for me and I still love the lace we found.  I have the veil too so someone could get a whole package.  Though not the gloves as they were borrowed from my mom's set.  I even still have the little flats I found LOL

The likelihood I will be able to give my dress to someone *I* know based on my height alone is not very good.  I am sure there are other shorties who can use it.  It is in fantastic shape... they cleaned and preserved it well.

I think it is a very lovely dress and you look so beautiful!

I don't know why it didn't load until now....

Thanks, guys! hello  My bad on the late delivery of the photo, I'm afraid.  I thought it would only take a second to scan the pic and upload it to photobucket.  Problem was I couldn't get the detail of the cutwork and embroidery to show from the one picture I could find. So it took a lot longer.

I'm going to start a spin-off thread for those of us who love our old dresses from weddings past.  I hope others will join in and show us what really captured your heart, back when. http://coloreddiamon...edding-gowns-past/0/

Squigs, I hope you'll take some closeups so we can see that lace.  And congratulations on a significant weight loss.  50 lbs!  Wow, girl!  I'm impressed, and you've kept it off - even being a relatively new mommy. Good on you, girl. rahrah

Ah well that explains the mystery then LOL  I thought things were going a bit crazy here!

And thanks for the kind words with the weight loss.  I actually gained a little more before I lost it all - 70 pounds total.  I admit when I got pregnant I was scared to death to gain weight back so I was pretty good about keeping it at 18 pounds gain total.  That really helped me to not worry about how long it would take to lose it all.  It's been quite a few  years since I lost that much so it's easy to keep at it.  Granted I gained a few during the holidays and birthday/baby streak I just had, but hopefully it will go away now that this bad month is over LOL

I will take photos of the lace and see if I can find photos of my dress to add to that other thread.  I know there are photos of my dress somewhere.... I am just not sure where.
