Thanks GG - it's pretty close to what I think will happen, minus the millgrain. I'd like it to be more like a continuous "carpet" of small diamonds in different sizes, with the stepped baguettes and the centre stone in a  bezel...

And thank you all for your ideas and enthusiasm.

David: expect a call tonight to discuss a few details...

Right - we have a decision...

Pardon my goofy drawing skills, but this is what David is attempting to make - not far off the first sketch, but with stepped baguettes each side of the LG centre, all bezel set in platinum, plus round melles on a largish dome.

Will keep y'all posted on progress. In the meantime, many thanks for all your ideas and enthusiasm.

HI all

Yes, I'm really excited about this ring!
We've gotten the baguettes together, and tomorrow we'll start designing the ring itself.

Very cool OMC!  I'm glad you're going bezel set.  I can't wait to see the finished product.

Quick update:

Both David and I keep getting distracted by banks failing, stars falling, children being born and other slightly more common events. The wax is now being worked on (well, it will be on Monday). Just two little changes: the centre stone bezel will be green gold to differentiate more between the green and the white, and we found that we have to go with 3 baguettes per side rather than 5 to get a good "stepped" appearance while keeping the top of the ring a decent size.

Ring will be shipped (or picked up - depending on whether we find a couple of cheap flights to NYC) to be with us in late Nov. Maybe earlier...

Wow, OMC!  I like the idea of the green gold surrounding the center and white for the rest.  It'll be fantastic!

Ring is progressing nicely - with a few twists and turns on the original design due to new ideas and practicalities.

David is kindly documenting with images all the build up phases, and I'll build a story to post here once it's finished. I can't praise him enough for attention to detail, patience and willingness to explore new things - I think the result will surpass even my modest and totally reasonable expectation of perfection.

However, just as I thought I had produced an original design, look what I found on eBay. Even at this stage I can guarantee that the craftmanship on "our" ring is about 100 times better, but still...

dontknow OMC, is "perfection" ever modest and totally reasonable?

I know that this ring is en route to OMC right now... I am having trouble WAITING. And, it is not even MINE.  Roll Eyes  This is sure to be an extraordinary piece. I was on the phone with David when the finished ring was in the office... I hear it is fabulous. OMC, I hope your DW's anniversary gift arrives soon! Afterall, the BIG day is coming up...  bliss

Ring was delivered today (after a small fight with rapacious customs agents), to my office to preserve the secret. So... no photos until next Tuesday, I'm afraid.

Ok, here's how it's going to work. Get your camera. Get your coat. Get into your office. Use camera to capture images of ring. Post resulting images.

See? Perfectly straightforward!  Grin

Oh well, the beans are spilled. DW caught mother-in-law and me taking a peek with the loupe...  angel

So, here are the pics that David sent me. I will take more, but for the time being, these give you an idea. The stone is a real chameleon. This morning there wasn't a trace of green in sight; now it's sufficiently green to show a real contrast to the bezel (a bit like the picture "from side/below" just under here)

faintthud LOOK at the RBs! The setting work seems incredible. And, the underside is GORGEOUS (I love that shot). Gosh, if it were mine, it would be the dirtiest ring in town: I'd be pawing all over it, all the time. Just running my fingers over all the beautifully set diamonds. ... the ring would have to be cleaned every few minutes.  Evil

OMC, I'm sorry that you and your MIL let the Boule out of the Bag, so to speak, but, I'm sure that your DW was PLEASANTLY surprised. I can't wait to see a photo of this amazing ring on her hand.

This is such a creative and complicated project... is the ring as you'd expected? Or, did it turn out differently than you'd imagined? It must be absolutely stunning in person.
