So my grandmother, she of the honker marquise and fluffy pink mules, gave me this aquamarine when I was in college.  It was set in a white gold and diamond halo, but of pretty terrible quality.  I had it reset as pictured and thought it was pretty darn cool, but that was about 15 years ago and now I cannot stand it.  The side view is fuzzy, but gives you the idea of what it looks like.  What would you do with it, if anything?

BTW, I was not sure if this thread should be in chit chat or in show off your jewels.  Mods?

Well I really like the way you reset it! So what about it do you not like? The setting or is it the stone itself? A halo would look cool but that could be costly. Maybe have it set with some side stones. Like peridot or amethyst! You could even do a pendant!

I guess it is just too many colors for me now with the rose gold and the yellow gold and the blue.  It is a pretty big stone, so with the big bands it just feels sort of overwhelming to me for every day, yet something about the golds makes it feel not fancy enough for more formal stuff.  I was thinking of maybe setting it as a solitaire on a thin micropave band, or maybe setting it as a necklace, though I am not sure in what setting.  Also, I think it is not the priciest of stones, so I would not want to spend a lot of money resetting it.

Hi GL!  Are you sure it's an aqua and not a swiss blue topaz?  If it's an aqua, the color is deep and, given the size, it would probably be quite an expensive stone.  If it's blue topaz, not so much.  I think it would look lovely set E/W with a thin white gold split shank.  That would cover some serious finger real estate!

I too was thinking e/w split shank.

JINX!!

Another way of maybe resetting it to make it more contemporary is to maybe set it as a pendant, or if you want a ring, I'd stay away from halos as it's HUGE, but maybe some side stones?

I'm still voting e/w split shank:)

You know DJ, I am sure you are right about the stone.  My grandmother referred to it as an aqua, but as much as she loves jewelry, she does not know much about it, so it probably is a blue topaz.  Many of her purchases were from Macy's.  The one thing I remember is her INSISTING that I never buy CZs!  LOL!

I agree that it is too big for a halo.  I like the split shank idea, but I am already gathering more rings than I can wear (is that possible???  CH???).

I would love pictures of pendants for ideas if anyone has any!!!!

For something very different (although maybe not cheap) why not a bezel or half bezel set into a bangle type bracelet! Might look really cool ??

Or....... perhaps a very vintage looking big ring with multiple prongs surrounding the stone. Do you know what I mean? Open work filligree with just the one center stone that has like sixteen prongs around it like a "frame".

It looks such a bright blue which would be more indicative of swiss blue topaz.  Deep colored aquas have a different tone.  Swiss blue topaz tends to scream blue whereas aqua is more gentle on the eyes.  It would make a stunning ring or pendant - I love big stones like this!

I think it's a lovely ring GL, but I want to put in my vote for an east/west pendant!

GL - Have you seen that picture of the marquise east/west pendant?

I am with annie!  I think that would make a stunning east west set pendant!  And, I love the strong blue color!

Personally, I think the thread is placed just right.  The subtitle for "Show off your jewels" is: Show off a new ring, an old ring, a remount, earrings, grandma's bar pin.

So, it seems to fit.

I can't wait to see what you decide!

First, you have to ask yourself...how SERIOUS are you about resetting this?   I detect a little apprehension since you already reset it once and the fact that it is an inexpensive stone,  you really don't want to break the bank.   I really like the way that it is too!   I do think since it is from your grandmother it deserves to be worn the way YOU like it!     When I first glanced at the pic, I immediately shouted in my head "EAST/WEST"!   Now...as far as a setting style and how you chose to wear it I am kinda on the fence.   I am such a ring nut...but with the arrival of your other rings,   I am leaning towards a pendant....maybe a style that matches your rb "legacy" setting that David did.   That way they can "co-ordinate" with each other...but not too "matchy-matchy".     You got some awesome input...please let us know what you have decided to do! ~Ronda

Great advice Ronda! I also like the suggestion of a bracelet but that might be to costly. I'm gonna look around at some pendant styles and I'll post them when I find some!
