I don't have many items in my jewelry collection but I do believe that is going to change soon!  Evil

First is my pretty new wedding ring. There are other pictures in my introduction thread; this is one I was able to get under a bright light.

Next is a pretty created sapphire and diamond ring DH got me for our first Christmas together. It was part of a set with pendant and earrings. Unfortunately, I seem to have misplaced the earrings. That makes me sad because I just love the color and vibrancy of the sapphire.

This is a really cool ring - she's a color changer! She's another pawn shop find so I'm not entirely sure what she is but I think it may be a tourmaline. The saleslady's diamond tester pegged it as a sapphire but I hear those machines can be pretty iffy. The gold tested as 10kt but I don't know if its plated or not as there are no markings inside, only a scratch and what looks like a tiny triangular shaped gouge.

I was on the way to the store when I noticed her pretty purple color was suddenly blue! Also, right now, she is flashing a bright pink.

Lastly, this is a garnet pendant given to me by my stepmother. I'm not crazy about many two toned pieces and I'm pretty sure the garnets are created but I like the stones. They would make pretty accent pieces in something else.

As far as I know, there are no colour change tourmalines, or synthetic garnets (other than YAG and other similar colourless stones), but there are synthetic colour change sapphires and alexandrites. Your colour change stone reminds me of an alexandrite.

I'm pretty much a gemstone newb. Not too noticeable is it?  Embarrassed

After it hit sapphire on the stores' meter thing, the saleslady implied she was either taking it for herself or raising the price once I was out the door. I just liked that it was a pretty reddish purple and had flashes of red and blue around the girdle when I moved it around. Then, after I had paid, she said if it turned green once in the sunlight it was tourmaline. I kept checking it on the way home but I mostly just saw more blue flashes. A few hours later I went to the grocery store and was able to capture the pictures of the brighter blue, which I really wasn't expecting since nothing had happened earlier!

I just googled alexandrites and how cool are these! Do you know if its true that synthetics have the reverse color changing (i.e. blue in incandescent light and red in bright light?) Thank you so much for the lead OMC! BTW - I just got done looking at your fabulous collection of jewels. Amazing!

Edit - I think its just a synthetic one. Apparently, alexandrites are way too valuble to be found in a 10kg ring. I'll have to find a gemologist to take a look at it because some websites are saying if there is no green its fake but others are showing pictures whose colors look like my stone and saying its real.

It very well could be a color change sapphire then.  Synthetic or natural.  I had one until it popped out and lost it (tiny stone and poorly cut but still... grrr...) It was purple-ish pink to green in color.  Sometimes a faint indigo color as well.

I think color change stones are cool.  I'd love to get another.

I'd imagine the garnets are real like OMC said.  They are relatively inexpensive in that color so there is usually no point in creating them for a piece like that.  I have a neat garnet and sterling bracelet that I enjoy wearing.

Nice collection though Smiley

Quote
Most gemstones described as synthetic alexandrite are actually synthetic corundum laced with vanadium to produce the color change. This alexandrite like sapphire material has been around for almost 100 years. The material shows a characteristic purple-mauve colour change which although attractive, it doesn't really look like alexandrite because there is never any green.
From Wikipedia - and that's what I was thinking of...

Also, as far as I know, true synthetic alex changes colour in the same way as natural - there is no physical reason why chromium doping should change its behaviour...

I noticed some teal flashes in certain light but I'm pretty convinced its synthetic. I took it to my jeweler and he confirmed its not real even though the gold is. He said otherwise, I'd be able to buy a house with it.  Grin

Oh well. She's been sold and I've found a different ring with the proceeds. Looks like ruby with a diamond border around it (is that what a halo is?) but I mostly bought it for the diamond setting - the arches that hold the diamonds look just like the arches from my OEC. I can't wait til she gets here!

My latest aquisition/rehab project. An Art Deco (?) synthetic ruby surrounded by .50ct of single cut diamonds. As you can see in this "before" picture, the synthetic ruby is really, really worn. There are broken prongs and so many that they seem to be crowding the stone. One of the diamonds is severely chipped and looks to be missing half of the top. I can't wait to get her "after" pictures taken!

This one is going to be a lot of work. Have fun!

FWIW - I think it's earlier than "Deco" proper (1925-1939); I'd say it's 1910-1920.

That ring has great potential!  I can't wait to see it completed.

This is a great start to a GIANT collection.  My husband would cringe if he heard me saying that...hehehee.

We need to get you some sunlight for these pictures!

I cannot wait to see what happens with the ruby.

Daylight pictures (through a 30X loupe). The broken diamond has been replaced. The center is a natural ruby now and we're trying a 4 prong look.  I think I really like it because it almost looks like the ruby is just floating. I might decide to go back to the 8 prong claws to stick with the original design but for now, I think she's lovely.

I love that diamond with a passion.  It was between a tablet PC and that diamond for me.  I'd snatch it up if I could, so I would go for it if I were you.

I love the photos of your ruby though.  She looks very lovely in the tweaked setting.

Hi Dovesgate, is this the same Ruby ring as in your newest  acquistion?  That was fast...I thought your ring was a work in progress, not yet completed.  Very nice!  Hope it brightens your day whenever you wear it!

clgwli: Don't worry, you have time before I can buy it. Hubby still hasn't given me the ok yet and I'm still busy funding things other than jewelry. Soon I hope but realistically, not til at least Christmas if not next year.

lovecolor: Yep, same ring! I received it at the end of March or beginning of April and started searching for the new center then. I just didn't get around to posting a before picture until last night so I could show the difference (I picked her up from the jeweler Friday). She could use the prongs rebuilt on the ones holding the diamonds in but I don't want the local guy touching them.

Dovesgate, I am actually going to decide on a family ring and I am not sure if that diamond would fit into what I want or need.

You may get it after all Wink  It's a lovely stone and has a lot I love in it... just not sure the color is what I want.  The cut, laser inscription and the fluor are all things I really do love though.

Dovesgate, your ruby ring turned out great.  It does look much nicer in the sturdy four-prong setting.  The ring cleaned up well and the new stone looks perfect in there. Enjoy her.

Here's a little something I picked up for my grandma while I was in Washington.

She is very, very fond of old costume jewelry since her mother was a big fan of Sarah Coventry Back in the day. Imagine my surprise to find real jade and pearls set in pot metal!

webmistress I can't upload my picture. The error message says it is too large but its under 10kb?

I think the issue is that the upload folder is full. It's a lot easier (and higher quality) if you use an image sharing service like Picasa, ImageShack or PhotoBucket to upload the image and place it in the message using [ img ] tags.
