My Blue Diamond Halo

WWW
« on: December 01, 2009, 04:30:17 AM »

Since I was asked to post my diamond info here I will gladly do so. I am new to these forums and wasn't sure how a lab/cultured diamond would be received here. I am so glad that I was encouraged to post so here goes!

It all started in 2005 when I saw this diamond ring:

(0.53ct Fancy Vivid Blue Takara Cultured Diamond in 0.27ctw natural, white diamonds 18k white gold halo micropave ring)

My heart skipped a beat and I just fell in love. Love at first sight. Oh yes! Unfortunately, it was a really bad time for me to buy any jewelry. We had the money but I was going to quit my job to stay at home with the kids. I wanted to make sure we had a cushion to fall back on since we were drastically cutting our income. Little did I know that my husband was going to get a job the next year that meant that we didn't need to worry so much. Still, I was being cautious which is a good thing. However, this all didn't matter since that ring promptly sold a few weeks later.

It proceeded to haunt me the next few years. I never thought that I wanted a halo setting until I saw this ring. I thought I had my dream ring which I helped design a few years prior. A design that is NOTHING like this ring at all. I thought I was crazy! My poor husband who humors me in my jewelry decisions. Smiley He pays for it and I agonize/research what I want.  Evil

Well, a year or so later I finally decided to recreate that ring above and started getting quotes from jewelers. I don't recall what prompted me to talk to the original maker of the ring above but I somehow found out that only the stone was sold and the setting was still available. They gave me a good deal on the ring since it was just sitting around doing nothing for them. They couldn't really post it for sale online since the bench that made the ring no longer worked for them. They knew it would provoke a bunch of questions about having this ring made that they could no longer make anymore. So, I bought the original, handmade setting (they later made a new version of this setting using CAD) and tucked it away in my jewelry box. This was in 2006.

The search for a blue diamond to put into this setting continued! It took me another 2 years before another Takara (that's a lab created/cultured diamond) came available that fit my criteria. I had almost given up hope because I was looking into other labs and even thinking of settling for a sapphire instead. The other labs didn't have as good of cut on their stones or they didn't have any Intense or Vivid colors available. Also, the Takara lab was having trouble with their blue production so there was a long time when they just didn't have anything to offer. I thought my search was doomed but then one day I just happened to browse the Takara site when I saw this available for sale ....

I could not whip out my credit card fast enough! My heart was racing as I was hoping someone else had not bought it already. Their web site does not reflect real time inventory. I had already told my husband that if another diamond came up that met all my criteria, I was just going to buy it without asking. And I did just that! Although, he was sitting next to me when I found the diamond so technically I did ask but he already knew what I was going to do anyway. LOL!  Grin

Anyway, I could not believe my luck and also did any of you notice how SIMILAR my new Takara was compared to the old one?? Same carat weight, same color grade, same clarity, etc. It truly was meant to be! Here is the certificate from the stone that sold in 2005:

It's pretty freaky if you ask me. I wonder what the measurements of the 2005 diamond was but that might just blow my mind if it was also the same! Ok, so anyway that is my little saga of my search for a BLUE diamond. Now I will post some photos. Smiley

Again, just for reference sake ... this is the photo from the original ring from 2005 taken by the jeweler:

And here is my ring with a new stone in 2008:

(Taken at the beach on a nice sunny summer day)

I have lots of photos too. Here are some from the first day with my ring. It was a gray, drizzly day in Seattle so the light could have been much better. Still, you work with what you have right? Smiley

More beach photos:

And of course, there is a video to go with it too. I think it was one of the last sunny days we had before summer was over so I ran outside and took a video in the middle of our cul-de-sac. I am sure the neighbors thought I was crazy! LOL!  Grin

Finally, I will post some photos of just the stone itself too. They aren't the greatest since I was anxious to get it set. The first few are a bit dirty and still have some dust on them from the diamond paper.

These next few I used a flashlight behind the stone and it ended up giving off these really cool flashes of light!

Finally, a last attempt to get the stone in some sunlight. It was really hard to capture the fire and brilliance in this stone on camera.

Enough photos for now?  Grin

Nice stone, and nice story; sometimes one gets the feeling that something is "meant to be" - in this case a 0.53 vivid blue.

On a technical aspect: it's interesting how they cut the pavillion: the lower girdle length must be something like 90%. I wonder if this is usual in darker-coloured diamonds, or if it's just this one.

On a totally unrelated topic: are you posting this at nearly 2 am your time, or are you in another time zone? Grin

Oh, Thank you, Lyta!   What a wonderful story.  I'm so glad you shared it with us, and shared such wonderful pictures.   It does seem that you were 'fated' to have that ring.  How cool is that?

I wish I could get Li'L Blooo to perform so well. (Actually it's the photographer who doesn't perform, I'm thinking)

OMC, I will have to see if there is more info on the cert that I have for my stone. Does it really look that high to you? I don't have many profile shots of the stone so it might be the angle which I took the photo too?

Oh and I am a night owl. I am not usually up that late but it took a while to write out the story and find the photos so time got away from me. Wink

Thanks ah2bqat!! I find it very hard to photograph my ring because it is so much more amazing in person. I have found that the key to taking good photos is a LOT of light and keeping the object and camera still for the extreme close up shots. Do you have any more photos of your lil blooo?

It may be the angle - a better view to assess would be with the camera on top of the diamond sitting on its table. Of course light is going to be tough to get with the shadow of the camera on top... but should be enough to check the cut.

Lyta your ring is GORGEOUS!  and such a great story too.  Smiley  i totally get obsessing over a perfect piece of jewelry.  good for you for persevering.  also, wonderful shots, i love how low to your hand your diamond sits, it's perfect. blue is one of my favorite colored diamond, and your setting reminds me of mine too!
i was considering a labgrown diamond before my DH proposed, but he was holding the reigns at that point, and opted for natural colorless.  he did go with medium blue fluorescence though, which means in sunlight i get treated to a nice blue glow from my baby.

Yes, I hate rings that are too high and am even considering selling a few because they are too high for me. It's just not practical with small children running around me.

I have always been in charge of my jewelry buying. Even my original wedding band which we just went to a jewelry store and picked it out together. My husband and I are a very untraditional pair. I never had a e-ring as we eloped plus with him being European it just wasn't in his culture to do something like that. Wink

I'm not too familiar with the processes involved in colored diamond culture, but I must say yours look INCREDIBLE! Your ring really looks like the one in the 2005 pic. Dreams do come true, eh? Congrats, Lyta!

Thanks DH!! It really is exactly like the original ring I saw in 2005. I am super pleased and consider myself pretty lucky to have found another blue diamond.
