My wedding set is 14k white gold and the band is whiter than the engagement ring.  They were purchased at the same time from the same jeweler.  My engagement ring has a yellow tint.  Can something be done about this.  Can it be re-rhodiumed? I don't know if that's the right term or not Embarrassed.  Is this harmful to jewelry?  Why do some pieces do this while others don't?  My Mom has my Grandmother's wedding set and it's still as white as ever.

Yes, it can be replated, cost is usually nominal, and to be expected with some white gold...

Thanks so much... I didn't expect a reply so fast.  I'm really enjoying meeting people who have the same interests that I do.  My friends think I get carried away with it.  I can't help it if the jewelry chooses to speak to me and not them! woohoo

You know, you bring up a good point.  My mom's original wedding set was 14K and she NEVER had it plated, yet it seems like many have to "nowadays'.  I wonder if they used different mixtures back then?Huh?

david Any idea why my mom's ring (14K, looks white) never needed replating after 30+ years vs. today's rings?

Hi Guys!
It could have to do with the different alloys used.
I will be glad to ask the more seasoned guys over at the factory this week.

what has happened to me, A LOT, is that jewelery i have bought was made in yellow gold and then rhodium plated to be white!  eventually with time and wear the rhodium wears off and they yellow gold starts shining through again!  i have certain pieces "re-dipped" almost annually!

I've heard the rate in which the rhodium "wears off" depends on one's skin (I guess the more acidic skin will eat away at the plating faster?)

Reminds me of musical instruments, I had that problem with nickel keys, they'd wear down fast and leave a pinkish hue.  So I had to get Silver keys.  For some reason "German Nickle Silver" is in my mind, something an old teacher once said...

What do you play, Snoop? I have a German bassoon, made in the 1920s with nickel silver keys. They still look like new, with no wear. Which is more than I can say for my WG tennis bracelets. For some reason, one is going yellow, the other isn't. I wear them equal amounts and clean them the same way and at the same rate, but one needs dipped and one is fine. I suspect different alloys too!

I have a Master's in clarinet performance and a minor in oboe.  I teach piano as it just comes with the territory. I teach beginning flute since moving to VA so I had to teach myself that which was easy (fingerings) but I am not familiar with the literature.  I love the Bassoon! I tried it for fun once and the thing is HUGE! Dang those thumb keys but the lower register is the same as the clarinet (give or take)

Cool! I play clarinet and alto sax too, but not terribly well!

I'd love to learn oboe. I'm happier with double reeds! I love my bassoon - it was my career plan, then I had a last minute change of heart and went with psychology. Wish I'd stuck with music!

Makes my dog howl though...

Aha Jen! Now I see why we get on so naturally.  It's a musician thing.......I love  the woodwinds.
Soprano sax is wonderful- although I'm not a huge Kenny G fan....

I used to perform with a .....Elvis impersonator. We had a nice sized band at points- and I used to write the horn arrangements.
For me, it's the combination of Trombone,  Alto Saxophone and trumpet that I love to hear. The brass and woodwinds together.

On the other subject..... I believe jewelers using rhodium to plate yellow gold white have an ethical need to let the consumer know it's going to turn yellow in a few months of wear.
Were you told this would happen to your stuff Sanchita? Sorry it's happened- if you need it replated anytime, we'll send you to our guy.

A good quality white gold- any carat- should guarantee a white look fopr the long run- even if it's not as white as when the rhodium is fresh.

most of the pieces it has happens to were given to me.  only one piece has begun to turn that i was not aware of.  i have had to do this many times so i do have a jeweler who only really deals with repairs and custom jobs who refinishes them for me, thank you for the offer though david!
