Oh, GL, I am so sorry to hear this.

Remember that most of the time, people with aphasia understand you perfectly well-- they just can't make the words, or think of them, to communicate with you.

So please talk to her, and encourage others to do the same, EVEN if she may not appear to be fully conscious at times.

Encourage her, tell her about your day, your kids, your baby-to-be, all of it.

And take care of yourself, too.

Love,
Robin

GL,
All my love and prayers to you and your family.  I will be thinking of your beloved Grandmother tonight.  What an endearing story about straightening her ERs.  She seems like a wonderful, determined, woman – her loving Granddaughter is a testament to her charm and strength of character.  You know she has us all in her corner...

Oh GL, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Robin has posted some very wise words.  It takes a while to recover from a stroke and you don't see huge progress overnight but the fact that your Grandmother knew you when you visited, could obviously understand you, is very reassuring.

Sending you a huge (((((hug)))))

Thank you all so much for your warm thoughts.  This has been a very rough week.  As I mentioned, when I went to visit my grandmother last Tuesday she was conscious and in good spirits though she had lost her ability to speak.  By Wednesday morning she could no longer open her eyes and had completely lost the ability to swallow.  By Thursday, they felt the stroke had peaked and there was only a 2% chance that she would come out of it at all if a feeding tube was inserted, and even then there was no way to know how much consciousness, if any, she would recover.  Given that she has been clear with us all for many years now that she had no desire to live in such a state of being, her sons had to make the very painful decision to forego the feeding tube and transfer her to hospice care in her own room.  Once she was there she looked so much more peaceful.  She is in her own space and her own nightgowns with all of her loved ones around her.  I never thought it would be so hard to let go given that she has lived such a long, wonderful life, but it has been very tough all around and is now just a waiting game of minutes, hours or days.

I so appreciate having you all at CDI for support and escape, and though I have not felt in the spirit of posting, I have been lurking and enjoying all the wonderful beauties you have snapped up, the pet updates and the pictures of T's wedding.  Thank you all for being there even while I am not able to.  You're the best!   grouphugg

GL I am so sorry for the pain you and your family are going through right now.  It must be very difficult to see her like this.  You have been so blessed to have your grandmother this far into your life and I know you will see her again one day.  No-one can ever touch all those memories you have.  One day you will catch yourself telling the stories that she used to tell and you will know that she is still with you.  I will keep you all in my prayers and hope that you can all find some peace soon.  Den  x
