Hi All,
I'll let the Lion fill us all in on the stone's history.
It's a HUGE marquise that we sent to GIA for our dear friend.
It's very good to have a Lion as a friend.
Hyeena's don't mess with you if you've got a Lion on your side!

Anyway, this one caught me totally by surprise.
The color was so unusual, I'd never seen a stone with this shade.
I figured it for Light Brown.
Boy, was I wrong.

Good Question Rubymu!

ON fancy Colors, GIA grades the saturation as "Even", or "Uneven"

If the shade is more faint- such as this one- there's not enough shade to classify this aspect- therefore it's "Not Applicable"

Sooooo... now that Ruby has asked my #1 question, here's my #2: how, exactly, does GIA determine the color?  IOW, it looked brownish to you, orangey to them....   Do they do this visually, or use a machine (um, spectrascope?  No idea if that is the right word...)

If the color is so faint that the tone is hard to determine, why is it not "just" a tinted white diamond (that's assigned a letter)?  Is there too much tint for that?

Okay, that was more than one question, I guess.

Well, what about this:  are you setting this for GL?  If so, HOW?!?  Curious minds and all that....

OMG!!!! Grin  I am so amazed to come home and find this waiting!!!  Wow, what a day!!!!  I must say the result is not at all what I expected!

Here is the story, though I really should get the full scoop from my 90 year old grandmother.  My grandfather bought her this diamond as part of a huge ring, probably in the 70s or 80s (he passed away in 1985).  It was a "waterfall" of small round brilliants surrounding the marquise.  My grandmother likes to change her jewelry around, so she made it into two smaller rings, one of all the rbs together and one a massive yellow gold band with the marquise in the middle.  About 11 or so years ago she gave my aunt the ring with the rbs and my mom the marquise.  My mom had it set in white gold (right, David?) with tapered baguettes (see my grainy pictures), but she almost never ever wears it.  She does love it, but my mom just has a thing about feeling like she should not wear big jewels.  Complicated, kid from the Bronx stuff (no offense D).

Anyway, my mom had been told a huge range of the ring's value - from $40,000 at the high end to $8,000 at the low.  Also, my grandfather bought it thinking it was 5 cts, my grandmother told my mother it was 4 cts, and the jeweler who reset it told my mom it was 3 cts.

Much of my mom's jewelery was stolen from her home in the winter, and I told her that this ring (it was in the safe deposit box at the time of the theft) really needs to be properly valued and insured, and I convinced her to let me take it with me to NYC to have David submit it to GIA.  Just in time too!  I was wearing it around our hotel room and as a fluke held it up to my ear and shook it.  It was rattling like a snake!  That thing would have been gone the next time she wore it for sure!!!

Anyway, I am truly shocked by the color.  I expected faint brown as well.  When you do not look at it closely it looks white, but if you really stare into it, it feels brown to me.  So interesting!!

So David, what does this mean for value?  Not sure what a grade like light orangey yellow means.

And, most importantly, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!

It sounds like you have really hit the jackpot with a little orange in that diamond!   Just like your new FLB cushion, who would have thought??  It even had the "Master David" perplexed!   This is great news as we now know now how wonderful a diamond like this can look when properly set...hence, your FLB cushion!!!    Do you have ideas how to set it...or will it go back into it's original setting!  What a stunningly Huge Diamond and a wonderful family heirloom!  Wow..you will be on cloud nine with all of these gorgeous jewels you have received for quite awhile!  icon_thumleft  ~Ronda

It goes back into the original setting.  It only came out get the GIA report and appraisal.  Mom will probably just stuff it back in the safe deposit box, and I will get far, far down the road!

I sure wish your mom would let you wear it an enjoy it!  I just hate to see something so gorgeous sitting in a SDB!    At least with your newest aquisitions, it would be hard for you to find another finger to put this ring on!! (or maybe not!! Cool)  ~Ronda

Don't I know it!!  About a year ago she was all set to give it to me.  She said, "You want it, you can have it."  For 2 days she verified that I may as well since she is not comfortable wearing it (she says it cuts into her other fingers).  So I told my dad to go get it for me.  He was shocked and said, OK, if that is what she wants to do, and went to ask her just to be sure.  Would you believe she said no!!!!  She said she was thinking about it and decided she may need it some day to pay for food (um, she is a big exec, I don't think so!).  Whatever.  Into the box it goes!!!

I will probably put it into a pendant when I get it.  The GIA report looked a little fuzzy - did you see that the length is almost 17mm!!!!!  That is more than my 2 cushions stacked on top of each other!!!  It is GI-normous!!!  51% depth!!!!

It is BIG. And the cut is unsual looking. The faceting and the fact that the points aren't very pointy.

Holy moly GL!!!!!!!!! That is one HONKER of a diamond! And what an unbelievable color! Whodda thunk ORANGE yellow??? It looked light yellowish or light brownish to me. It's a GORGEOUS marquise though. I sure wish your Mom would let you wear it & make use of it. It's sad to see pieces just sitting in safety deposit boxes. I wear my Great Aunt's RB antique ring, not all the time, but I hate to see it just sitting in the safe all the time. I think jewelry needs to be enjoyed! I'm so glad you decided to submit it to GIA....just in time! It would have been horrible if it had fallen out of the setting. The pic of that GIA report is a little fuzzy. I didn't know if it was 10.98 or 16.98. I was thinking 17mm!?! No way!!! And 51% depth too! Holy cow, that's huge!!!

I'm curious too on how GIA grades on color. Do they visually compare diamonds to other diamonds, a chart, or do it by computer somehow???

Congrats GL!!!! Smiley Amy

Okay, I think it should be a requirement that every one of us have a diamond this big for self defense purposes!  Woah!  17mm!  That is just so MASSIVE!  I hope your Mom gives it to you soon because, I agree, it's a shame to know it will be sitting in the dark all the time.  Diamonds need sunshine like we need.........er.......diamonds!

Foxy, that's a very good question and I know you've read through the diamond grading section.  I will post your question over there - I would love an answer too.

Here's a link if anyone else would like to follow along.

Just got off the phone with my very excited Dad.  He called my grandmother and she was shocked.  She said my grandfather bought the original ring for about $4,000.  He did not ask her what the occasion was because he said my grandfather just bought her stuff all the time.

BTW, they actually started giving me jewelry at 3 or 4, but I lost the ring (it was either sapphires or amethysts) - duh! - so they held off until I was about 7 and then just decided I needed something, so took me out and let me pick whatever I wanted.  I chose a small amethyst (lavendar was my fave color).  When I was older my grandmother replaced it with a bigger one and gave me more of her stuff, and thus a habit was born!!!

I am going to take her out to breakfast on Sunday, so I will ask her for more info.

Hey guys!  So I took my grandma to breakfast today and asked to tell me more about the ring.  They got it from a neighbor who was a jeweler, probably in the 70's.  I asked her what the occasion was and she said, "No occasion.  I had a gorgeous 2 ct diamond and just decided I wanted 4 carats.  I was so spoiled!"  Little does she know what I have been up to, but truthfully, she is so happy when she sees me enjoying jewelry.

She did think the guy had not given them such a good deal, especially because he told her it was a 4ct diamond and it is really just uner 3.5 cts.  They bought if for $4,000 in the 70s, around the same time my parents bought a home for $33,000 (that is now worth $1 mil).  So relatively, it was a lot of dough at the time.  David guesstimated it to be worth a minimum of $20,000 now.  Does anyone know what that means interms of relative value between then and now?

Anyway, we called my dad together and she said to him "Hey!  You owe me $16,000!"  Gotta love Grandma!!!

No, she was asking my dad for the money, not me.  She knows it is my mom's now.  But she did insist that it goes to me and not my SIL!!! angel

Sorry if this just sounds horrid, but better to be gifted while the parents are alive and can se you enjoy it, rather than you having to pay taxes on it when they pass....

I hope you get it soon and to mark a happy occasion...that diamond deserves to be worn and have a happy story connected to it.
