Great topic!  I'd have to say that sapphires and pearls are my favorite gemstones.  I have sapphires in lavender, blue, pink, magenta, and colorless.

I am a sapphire girl, myself.

I really like tsavorite garnets, "regular" red garnets, and amethyst, as well.

I don`t own one but I once saw someone wearing a fabulous ring and I asked what the stone was. It was paraiba tourmaline. I looked around online but none of the cheaper paraibas matched the fabulous color of hers.
Eventually I tracked down some decent sized beautifully coloured stones but geez they were twice the price of good quality diamonds.
Apparantly true paraiba is only mined in one place in the world which makes it very rare but many places try to pass off appatite ( much cheaper ) as a paraiba substitute and there are many badly coloured cheaper paraiba stones which are overpriced.
The colour is fabulous, a clear turquoise blue and if i can find a good picture of a good stone then I`ll post it.

Diamonds are like people, put them under a microscope and you`ll always see a flaw but hold them up to the Sun and each and every one is beautiful.

Here we go, paraiba tourmaline and this stone is quite small, less than half a carat but it shows a good colour. Won`t tell you the price of it though !

Too many to list!  I love most gemstones.  Special favorites are colorful opals, diamonds, turquoise, aquamarine, jade.

I remember that pendant, GracefulLion.  I was one of the few who said they liked it.  I think it is so pretty!

The Paraiba tourmaline is gorgeous! I am especially attracted to blue and green gemstones.  Diamonds attract me because of their brilliance and hardness, turquoise and jade because of the color.

Geena, I think my memory was of you being the only one who liked it!  Thanks for the compliment on it though DJ!  I didn't return it because no one else liked it.  I think it was when I got the faint brown cushion from David instead, though I might be mistaken.  Anyway, it really is a very pricey piece though I see it as an heirloom.  I think there is a smaller version I may go back and check out.

I wasn't part of this forum then, GracefulLion, but I would have so been on board with that pendant!! Moonstone is one of my very favorite stones, and the style is just making me weak in the knees! It's very earthy.

Sapphires, rubies, emeralds, aquamarine, spinel, tourmaline, beryl, citrine, I love them all.  Unfortunately the only gemstone I donīt particularly like is amethyst my birthstone.  I wonder what you would read in that Artsycarly.
By the way, I read that  the story about opal is a myth that started with a Victorian melodrama about an unlucky opal ring.  I love them too.  I am sure I have missed out on lots and lots of gems I love.
When we lived in Mozambique after a storm we used to walk near the river and pick up carnelian and jasper and amethyst.  I have heard recently that people are often taken by crocodiles in that exact spot, but at the time I had no idea so I  had a wonderful time hunting.

You know, my cousin's birthstone is amethyst also and she hates it.  I remember as a little girl, I was disappointed because my birthstone was "white". I was born in April.  And now I love that I'm a diamond girl.  Amethyst is also one of my least favorite, but it's because I hat purple.  Your stories of walking near the river after a storm sound so beautiful.  What a nice memory to have.  We don't all have gemstones readily available at out fingertips. lol.

Also... I read somewhere that paraiba tourmaline is THE stone to collect right now.  Unfortunately, I didn't get to finish reading why.

I've always loved sapphires, especially when paired with diamonds. There's just something so purely elegant about that blue and white combo, esp. set in white gold or platinum.

But of course I'm also drawn to rubies and emeralds, and, um, aquas if the color is "caribbean" as DJ said.

All that being said, there's just nothing that sparkles like a diamond, which is why I came around to them after loving sapphires for so long. Can anyone tell me why only diamonds sparkle, and the others just catch their light? Or am I showing my utter ignorance by asking this question?

Well, of course most of you know that I love sapphires.  I still hope to own a big honkin sapphire someday!  Spinels would be next favorite.  I would love to have a nice tanzanite too, but they are just too brittle to spend so much money on!

GL..... that pendant is beautiful,..........but I agree with saving up for something that you would wear more often.    Have David make you a pendant in rose gold! Wink Evil
