I am not quite sure what side stones these are because they do not look as brilliant as the fat half moons but I LOVE THEM!  Please someone put me out of my misery and make a ring with these step looking THIN half moons.  I love this look.

Are they thin or just set at a steep angle?

I have always loved that picture too!!  I like the more tall and narrow half moons and traps, as well as thin shanks.  I have a feeling they are really thin.  I don't think a steep angle would make that big a difference.  Would be interesting to hear though.

I keep coming back to this thread to see what the ring is going to look like!

C'mon! What are your thoughts now, DJM? Or have we confused you horribly?

Looking forward to seeing this one.

Nope, not any closer.  1087 Everytime I think I've made up my mind someone comes up with another amazing idea.

You guys are terrific and I really appreciate all your advice. Here's what I like so far:

IDHAP's design with the E-W oval set alone with the beautifully detailed undercarriage.
DJ's E-W stone with graduated rounds stepping down on the shoulders.
Trinkette's idea of an E-W setting with two small heart shaped sides.
Jen's thought to have DW decide.
OMC's scale and sidestone allowance.
WM's picture of the oval sitting E-W with the partial bezel.
Sarahbelle's encouragment for the E-W setting and double helix.
Titania's advice that less is more and setting the oval with double baguettes
Cockneysparrow's thoughts of setting the stone E-W by itself with small diamonds accents down the shank only (like an eternity ring).
Robin's idea of a full bezel.

Finally the two things I appreciate most:

1) DJ's advice:
"No matter how angry the woman, she will always calm down and be "all nicey, nice" when you start talking diamonds."

2) GiaGirl calling first dibs when the darned thing isn't even made yet--LOL!

Hmm. You have a few really lovely choices there. Honestly, I don't think that any of them would disappoint- they are all good, well thought through ideas that will work well with your stone.

My suggestion of letting her decide is probably the least exciting, and only based on my own preferences. Still, if all else fails, the surprise gift of a diamond in a stone holder or simple temporary setting might be perfectly delightful- that way you have a project to get your teeth into together.

EW really does seem to be the most popular choice for this particular stone, and I wouldn't disagree with that at all.

Really, whatever you do, the stone is such a beautiful one, there is not much chance that it will disappoint in any way. I'd be blown away by that diamond as a surprise!

I am with Jen.  If you had some idea you were really crazy about and had your heart set on, that would be one thing, but since you don't, maybe present it as is and spend some time looking at designs together.  I know it is not your normal MO, but could be worth it in this case.

Why do I know this will never happen though?  You do have a ton of fabulous options.  Cannot wait to see!  Is this for a special occasion?  Any date by which you should decide?

I love all the ideas everyone has for DJM's oval, it has been so fun to watch Smiley

My vote for your lovely oval would be a partial bezel in yellow gold with small white pears set into a fairly thin platinum shank!

Sorry-when I can't sleep, I get up and play with jewelry design.

Nice design. Thank you very much.

DJM-No worries, it is a terrible rendition of what I actually see in my 'minds eye', but this is what I get when I'm up at 3 a.m. and trying to keep my mind off of things! Smiley  I still love your idea of surprising your DW-wish my hubby would surprise me more often  Cheesy And for all of you with warped minds(and you know who you are!) I didn't mean anything to do with this  sex

Good Luck on the decision making!

I have no idea if you've actually whittled this down yet or not DJM.  I just picked up an oval ring on my trip to England that has a twist on the shoulders.  It's N/S so you would have to envision it E/W but I bet the yellow would look el-fabbo in a setting like this.

I am guessing this is already in the works........come on!  Fill me in!  I am so behind I've almost given up hope of catching up by reading the threads!

Hey, DJ-- that's so pretty!  Is it a pink sapphire?  It's a different color than most pink tourmalines I've seen, so that's my best guess  Cheesy.

DJ, how in the world do you decide which ring to wear each day? Do you change off often? I have enough trouble with 3 rings!

Yes, I made a decision. I bounced it off DJ yesterday and she supported my decision.

Before I post my final decision, I need time to digest it myself. I'm going to sleep on it and see if I feel the same tomorrow morning. Still trying to decide if DJ was just being nice. (Without blowing her cover, she really is sweet to me behind the scenes--then again, she is sweet to everyone--with the exception of girl scout leaders).

Anyhow, I want to thank everyone for their input and interest--especially T and DL. You are the BEST!! I wish I can make both of your designs.

Has your wife figured out something is 'up' with her other ring being gone?

Hummm-I'm thinking double helix design, set E-W for your DW's ring Smiley
