I've gotten over my snit at that gorgeous emerald in the split shank halo.  I figure I have a better chance of affording it than the house I love down the street. Grin

So, once again with thanks to OMC's camera tricks, here are my beloved baubles.  First is Ryan's choice for mt birthday.  pretty perspicacious for a 12 year old boy!  I wear it with 2 matching eternity bands of .30ct each, a Christmas present from Scottie, since it kept falling off my finger and refused to let it out my possession long enough to size it.  What can I say, after losing my puppy love for 35 years, I wasn't about to let this sign  of his return go anywhere.

Then, there is my Mom's souvenir from a long ago trip to Columbia with my Dad.  She gave it to my after I helped take care of her and Dad after her knee surgery, years before.  It's a 1ct Columbian emerald, EC of course,  It has a little garden in it that I love.

Then, there is my silly cigar band.  When I was a kid, I thought the Unsinkable Molly Brown was just a hoot of a movie and always envied her wedding ring.  Can you believe it - I actually found one that's a pretty close match!

Thanks, guys.  Our family sort of has a history of giving pieces we love, while we are alive.

I received my great-aunt's opal and pearl locket at 16.  I gave my elder niece, Major Jen, a T--- floating heart that I was given by a former fiance, for her 16th; and her little sister (my twin) the same locket at her 16th.  Both received beautiful rings-one sapphire and one opal at college graduation.  Don't feel bad for my nephew - he got a chunk of stock, back when it was worth something. angry5

My stepdaughter, and mother of my grandboys, didn't receive anything from me until the last few years; when I passed her grandmother's diamond jewelry on, along with the pieces her Dad gave me.  (I didn't trust her Mom not to steal them.  All the earring and rings - mainly sapphires (blue being the color of constancy- something she needed dreadfully), I gave her at 9 and at 15, disappeared into her mother's jewelry box, never to be seen again.)  She will get Lilo's collar, the 5 ct tw diamond tennis bracelet, when she turns 30, next December.

I gave Major Jen my favorite diamond and sapphire bracelet, just because.
Mom got my favorite sapphire and diamond halo ring when when was my maid-of-honor 23 years ago in Vegas.   Both my sister and I will relinquish our 2ct marquise solitaires and bands, when needed, to her son and to my stepson.   And eventually my stepdaughter by DH will receive all my emeralds, which are her birth stone.  Of course, Dad has to replace them with DBL rings first, tho. Grin

Both Mom and my DS can share similar tales.  It makes life fun, and makes sure that pieces don't disappear whe we get 'old'. tongue3

Beautiful greens!

That is a great family tradition.  My grandmother gave away all of her best pieces while alive because she wanted to enjoy seeing us all wear them.  I am hoping I will have the strength of characters to part with mine in the same way.  I guess having all boys is good, as it means I get to hold on a bit longer... And that's just the right thing to do, GL.  One has to be sure that the boys are grown up, and their choices in partners will remain in the family so you can visit your favorites for the remainder of a (hopely) long and interesting life!   angel11

No point in letting a sparkly go, if you 'll never get to visit it again.   Evil

Oh, these are lovely! I especially like the colour of the emerald your father gave to your mother.

Now, did you say 2ct marquise solitaire? Heck, I'd love to see that one!

Miz M,
I'm always happy to oblige you, especially now that I know your have a little natural red-head enlivening your young life.  One of us tantrum2 has hit the age where color comes out of a bottle or the driver's license will read 'grey'.

I wish I knew how to link to a back post.  I put a couple shots of it in a thread called 2KJ.

I need to go read the help sessions so I can start a collection of pix bigger than 200x200 pixels.  It's starting to bother the DH that my laptop is ALWAYS open to DBL.  Maybe the hint will start to sink in, soon. Grin

Hummm... you call that a solitaire?

Lovely solitaire then. And nice colour sapphires, too.

well, thank you, OMC.  You always know how to make things work.

And she WAS a solitaire when I met her, but I decided to have the diamond mounted in the weddingband, as was popular 20-25 years ago.

Miz M, let's see if I can make this thing do as OMC says.  If it doesn't, don't blame the teacher.  His works!  Huh?

I love colored gems and green happens to be my favorite colour! I often wonder why they are not as popular as white diamonds when it comes to engagement rings. Perhaps it has more to do with the fact that more advertising dollars are spent on marketing diamonds?

Ah2bqat, that is a great family tradition to have. I'd like to start it too but I'm a little afraid that youngsters these days seem to place little value on heirloom jewelry. I recall reading a post from a girl whose BF recently proposed to with his grandmother's ring. She actually made plans to take it apart and have it reset in a setting she prefers. How would you feel if that happens to one of your favorite pieces?

I think emeralds are gorgeous too.

I had an emerald ring for a while, but I actually sold it because it was too big for my hand. It looked silly on me. It was gorgeous though, and I'm always looking out for a smaller one.

I liked it, but it paid for a year's tuition at law school, a crib and a stroller, so no regrets!

I think that people don't choose emeralds for engagement rings so often because although they're stunning, they can be quite fragile. In the UK, coloured stone e-rings are popular, but usually sapphires and rubies. One disadvantage is that you can't put emeralds in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner, and that drove me nuts, because I really wanted to clean the diamonds. Plus, I'm hard on rings so I was always worried about whacking the stone off something and cracking it.

DH, I think that heirloom pieces are seen more as heirloom stones - the settings aren't so important to a lot of people. I think it's quite common to use an heirloom ring and re-set the stone. It's a nice way of keeping it in the family yet still giving someone exactly what they want for their e-ring. That said, I'm hopelessly sentimental and I would be very reluctant to break up a family piece. I guess it's all about personal choice. My SIL broke up my MIL's e-ring and MIL's mother's e-ring to make a piece for herself and each of her two daughters. They were both 5 stone bands, so they had 3 smallish but very lovely diamonds each to use in new pieces. DH was heartbroken that she did this, but the rest of the family were ok with it. I was beyond p*ssed off, since MIL actually left these rings to me, but that's life, I guess.

KEWL Emerald Jen!!!

DH- I believe that the harness of diamonds has some impact on many buyers when it comes to choosing an engagement ring.
Emeralds- which can obviously be gorgeous, are far softer than diamonds.

ON the heirloom issue, I'm with Jen....I feel the ring itself has a lot of intrinsic value on an antique piece. A shame to disassemble something like that.
In fact, I'm having a hard time thinking how we should set some of the older stones we've gotten recently.

Second the motion on the gorgeous emerald ring, Miz M; but it sounds like letting it go was the better choice for you.  No doubt the new owner will love it just as much, and wear it more. Kiss

And thank you, DH.  I'm lucky in my nieces and step-daughters, although it has taken one or two a number of years to mature to where I'd consider handing off a good piece.

IMO, jewels are to be loved and enjoyed; and if a new setting is what it takes, then more power to her!  Just don't forget the family history!  For myself, I doubt I'd ever break down a piece given me, knowing how much it was loved before and what it meant to the giver to pass it on. Heart

Our family doesn't have many items in the heirloom class, just GM's e-ring, and my great-aunt's locket.  I can only hope the locket keeps being handed down from aunt to niece for their Sweet 16th.  I know it isn't worth disassembling since there are no stones of significance on it.  The center opal is lovely, but not at all large, so the piece should be safe.  Grin

David, for older diamonds, I'm a fan of old settings or reproductions of old settings.   It's a bit like decorating an older house.  You probably want to go easy on the IKEA in a Victorian home.  <G> Likewise, vintage diamonds look better in settings that are similar to those they might have been set in when they were new.

When I was young, long before I actually married, I thought that I'd want an antique ER.  However, so many of the ones I saw-- I didn't know where to look, obviously, and this was before the wonders of the internet-- had settings that were quite worn.

Filigree, in particular, often wears all the way through, especially in gold.

So, I went with a "new" ER.  Still, I love old things, and when necessary, new things made to look like old things.   Cheesy

Worse, I think,  David.

You meet a bull with tits, I'm thinking you'd better be travelling at speed  Exit-Stage-Right , so you wouldn't have much leisure to take in the view.  While IKEA in a Victorian can just leave you stunned still.  omg
