Ok, I thought I'd start this thread in hopes that members upload their pictures in the photo gallery or in photobucket so we can see them again as posts with pictures that are over 120 days old are gone.

I, like Michi, miss them!!

OK, I don't mean to out myself as extremely not computer savvy, but what is photobucket exactly, and why is it better for keeping pictures than the way we usually post them?  I will be happy to learn, just wondering what the benefit is.

http://photobucket.com/

Photobucket is an internet program where you upload your photos to the internet. You use the address (url) from the photo and post it anyhwhere you want as many times as you want. It also will be larger than attachments for the most part.

When you post a photo on a thread, it stays there. And then you post it on another thread, you're duplicating a photo you have previously uploaded. So because of space on the server, I will often have to delete photos and duplicates after 120 days. If I don't the server starts to drag. Internet photos don't take folder space. And you can post the photos anywhere on the internet if you have the http address.

Hey guys, using photobucket is an awesome way to show the photos.

In related news- we will soon be moving this site soon to a "dedicated server"
This will mean that CDI will be faster overall, with a lot more ability to grow.
Members should not notice any difference, other than the site wil work faster.

Photobucket is great!! It holds a lot and I opted for the free account.. I made my settings "private" so people can't view my stuff by rightclicking a picture, properties, etc.,

anyway.. It holds A LOT!! Let's say, I had over 600 pictures from CDIers and they all fit along w/ my catster stuff Smiley

just want to add...  photobucket is a site which only does hosting pictures...  and serving them...  so their servers are probably optimized for storing pictures and serving pictures...  as in SDI is a forum...  so storing pictures on SDI's servers can become a problem when it has too many pictures...  besides pictures take up a lot of disk space...  hence it might slow down the forum performance overall...

Thanks ace. Gotta love the tech head explanation. I just think it's great to have a resource on the web to keep your photos. That way you can post them multiple places even places that don't have upload capability. You can almost always do the url thing. I have some on my website. But I think I'll do some photobucket simply because I can't always remember which file I put what photo.

I started using Webshots just because I already had an account there. But it's not very user friendly to get the pics to post here.

I can upload to them and click on "full size" which opens a new browser window and shows just my picture there. When I copy and paste that URL into a post here, it never works. Maybe I'm just not clicking the right BBC tags button here??  I finally figured out that I have to use the special "link code" they issue for each picture I have there.  Not that I can't figure it out, but it seems to be a long drawn out process with all that copy/pasting a different link for every picture.

But I would rather have to do that than not see any pictures. Yikes!!

Have you ever considered using Firefox instead?  It's a really nice program, and there's a special option when you right click a picture called "Copy Image Location."

That way, you just click that option and there's no opening up a special box, then highlighting, then coping like there is when using Internet Explorer.

Can't tell you how many times I've heard this.. lol.. but I'm such an IE fan. Or maybe I'm just stuck in my ways.. or.. or.. maybe I'm just chicken to change anything since experiencing not just one, but three complete meldowns in just two years! And I am soooo gunshy about adding new stuff!
