I have noticed that most (all?) post links to other places in the forum like this:

http://coloreddiamond.info/index.php

I think sometimes it may be useful (or more beautiful) to post like this, with a description instead of a link:

An interesting place to go

especially useful if the link is long, and so cannot be seen in its entirety. You can still see where the link points by hovering over the description and looking at the status bar (lower left hand corner of IE)

The difference in tags - minimal

Code:
[url]http://coloreddiamond.info/index.php[/url]

vs.

Code:
[url=http://coloreddiamond.info/index.php]An interesting place to go[/url]

Hope this helps.

You are right. It would be even more helpful to have a button that allowed people to plug in the description. I'm hoping it will be in the next version of the forum software or that there will be a mod available to do this.

Other forums that have similar software have wizard-like interfaces for this; I don't know how much it's JS/other scripting implemented by administrators and how much is a straight out feature. If you want to see it "in action" let me know and I'll send addresses by PM

I just need to know what it's called for SMF. When I look through the modifications I can't find it but they often name it something that is totally off the wall. That's programmers for you. Thanks OMC.

Ugh. I don't modify php very often. When I was doing the forum I was. But just finding the right file and finding all the other files attached to php. I'll search for a mod. I have before but couldn't find one.
