I was fully sedated when I had my wisdom teeth pulled.  It was one of the best choices ever.  I woke up, and I didn't even know they had started.

I think it saved me a lot of pain in healing also - the oral surgeon was able to do what he needed to while getting the teeth out without having to worry about hurting me or me having to try to follow directions.  I only took one dose of the pain meds afterwards, and I healed very quickly.

I would say about half of my friends decided to go under, while the other half stayed awake, and nearly all of the ones who went under had a much easier time after the procedure.

Well, my son has his eye on the dental profession and starts with a health science in high school this year.

The gas works fine. I had a biopsy today so dental woes still follow. My temporary crow cracked and I'm a week away from getting the permanent one plus other dental delights on that visit. The dental surgeon was hinting about my wisdom teeth. Sure, let's just haul those out between doctor appts.

Just drank a shake. It was cherry. Pretty good, too. Tasted okay with all the gauze in my mouth today.

Ok, heavier forms of sedation freak me out. I stopped breathing with a spinal that I had when Maria was born...and the thought of going out cold sends me into a panic. The doctor who was going to take out my wisdom teeth tried to reassure me that he would have a cardiac nurse present....I fipped out so bad he gave me a referral to the one doctor in town that hates to fully sedate (he had a patient die in his chair in the late 60s)
The new doc (he was not quite 70 then)  and I got along fine...he was glad to work on someone who is novocane only...and between yanks we chatted about tattoos, piercings, and bike riding. Much less anxiety.

I had some sort of IV for my wisdom teeth....  I was barely conscious and a few feet above the dental chair, but I do remember some rather loud crunching noises/sensations.

Turns out later that the dental surgeon was known to be a bit of a butcher.  As was the surgeon for my appendectomy (RIGHT out for that one).  At least they gave me some decent post-op painkillers for the latter... Roll Eyes

i had a great wisdom teeth surgery experience...  i was just on local anesthesia...  so i was completely wide awake when they were cutting up my gum and taking out my wisdom teeth parts by parts...  don't remember a pain during the process...  it was pretty much painless...

the recovery was great too...  no excessive swelling or anything...  just a minor little swelling on one side of the lower jaw...  a little bump...  that's pretty much it...

Mine managed to get mine out mostly whole...and he did say he was required by law to incinerate them...but he would leave the room for a few minutes if I wanted to steal them...which I did...

I was fully sedated and went to the hospital for my teeth (was the norm with our dentist).  I felt no pain, and had a great experience.  One of my wisdom teeth was upside down.. I kid you not! (I only had 3 of the 4) No dry sockets (I was paranoid as I heard those were a pain).

I didn't have much pain to be honest, if any.. I was more annoyed I couldn't eat solids... AND BRUSH MY TEETH!! That was horrid! LOL

Oh, this so makes me want to get wisdom teeth pulled. I had no sedation with childbirth and did not have general until I had a 9-hour surgery. And then another one of those. Laughing gas is dandy for me. You're not out, but you're less anxious.

My mouth is now officially killing me. I just took a pain pill. Usually I forgo that luxury but I've had enough dental pain lately to deserve one decent night's sleep.

Oh Man! Sorry about, that I hit the wrong key.

Anyway, I had some baby teeth that were fused to the bone and had to be BROKEN out of my head.  With only a local anesthetic, the dentist grabbed hold of each tooth with pliers (or least that's what it seemed like) and YANKED my entire head back-and-forth, back-and-forth, until each tooth finally broke off.  I remember thinking that it must have looked like something from an old slapstick comedy... I was surprised the dentist didn't have to put his foot on the chair to brace himself! Then, for weeks, I had to come in while they worked on the "replacements." There were a few days when I was there for six hours or more. I had some fancy stuff done at the time (LONG, LONG ago!) and they took pictures of my mouth while I stood on a street corner (for the light, naturally) of the work when it was done.  My poor little high-school aged mouth was featured in dental schools all across America. *sigh* For years, I'd have dreams that I'd smile and all my teeth would fall out!  freakout

WM, sorry to hear about your biopsy and unhappy mouth.  I hope you're feeling well soon. BTW, I've had three wisdom teeth out, all with local, and wouldn't have it any other way.  tongue3

Trinkette, that experience sounds grisly!

They'll go for the wisdom teeth next. I've had extensive surgery on my head which has inspired all these dental and jaw issues, sinuses etc and etc and etc (so very boring). The biopsy has swollen my face up today to balloon proportions. I'm not at all concerned about the results. If there was an issue there, my gut would have told me. It's always right.

My dentist yanked a broken tooth out when I was 12. I was crying and he SLAPPED me in the face so I would stop crying and be still. So I had a swollen mouth and cheek. He hit hard! Dentistry has fortunately progressed past that. Three more appointments to go.

Oh HEAVENS! I can't believe someone would SLAP a child like that! I'm SO sorry (a FEW years late, I know!). I think it's pretty amusing how we've all described these vairous dental experiences using the term YANKED as opposed to the less "expressive" word EXTRACTED!  laughing8

WM-I too had all 4 wisdom teeth extracted under general.  I'm glad I did it that way-the teeth were upsides down, backwards and impacted, would have been  tough without it I think!!!  The recovery went well, just make sure to rinse with a water syringe.

I think I have to put off the wisdom teeth. I have too many other appointments for other stuff right now. I can only take so much in one month.

Yeah WM hold off until you're ready or until they're bothering you.

My dad still has his and they never bothered him or his teeth...

WOW DL! Another upside-down person!! You are right though, salt water, rinse, rinse rinse is the key! Mine were impacted too.  I didn't like looking like a chipmunk...

Sam-yup upside down on the bottoms and backwards on the tops  Grin  Very Nice.  I really didn't swell or bruise much, I used some prescription mouth wash before hand to help with the bacteria growth afterwards.
