Usually I am not toooooo bad with technical stuff.  Embarrassed But for the life of me I can't figure out how to return a PM.  I logged on and my pop-up blocker stopped the PM box. Then I clicked the link from the message that was sent to me and I get the message.

Sorry, you can't read your personal messages.

I have gone to the user id and clicked the name but no options for PM shows?   Huh?

Webmistress would probably be the go-to girl, but try getting into the forum site, cliking on the TOOLS box up by FILE  EDIT VIEW. top left...

Anyway, in TOOLS should be a drop-down box for pop-up blockers.  You should be able to disable the blockers for this site only, or disable for this session and restablish when you are ready to log-out.

So today the message came up again, made sure the pop up blocker was off.  The window opened and same message.  ERROR Sorry, you can't read your personal messages. Me or the system?

I suspect PMs have been disabled for new users - too much spam coming into people's inbox, but the only ones to tell for sure are Webmistress and David.

Hi all,
Actually I need to ask WM for specifics- PM's are being removed for the reasons OMC mentioned, but I do not know the status of that project

Can someone get rid of this pop up I keep getting?  It happens every time I log on to tell me I have new messages.

My pop-up blocker never prevented me from using the PM function.  However, I can't PM anyone tonight, and I had a question for David.  PM is not an option under anyone's name!

We'll check with webmistress to see if the PM function was disabled.
Sounds as though it might have been.

Have the PM`s been shut down ? I notice the facility doesn`t seem to be available any longer.

Yes, PMs have been shut off. We were having quite a few problems with them not the least of which is the spam bots and unsavory types waltzing in and pm-ing certain members. There are forums still running pms but other forums have shut down the function due to similar issues. I also had to add a bunch of new security patches for this reason.

Then there is a problem of the pop up windows with some members.

I was often accused of reading PMs because the system would randomly reference my email since I set up the forum. I occasionally got PMs sent directly to me that people intended to send to others and that also made people think I was acting as a PM watchdog. It was embarrassing to me to get PMs not intended for me. I did troubleshooting but people could not recreate the event that resulted in my getting a random PM every once in a while so I could not resolve it. I also could not remove my email since it was used to set up the system without an act of congress and the prospect of losing and having to reinstall data.

David could not track customer questions either and there is no mod that allows for that function. He needs the email "string" to keep up with various customer questions.

So as you can see, for a lot of reasons, we simply had to shut it off and put those resources elsewhere such as setting up the shopping cart. I was spending far too long every day with the PM system.
Sorry, I know you guys liked it but it had become a giant tumor for me.

I think this is totally understandable WM and appreciate all of the work you and D put into trying to make it work.

Now that PMs are done though, there seems to be an outstanding issue.  Someone PMd me right before the PM system was shut off. I was able to read it through my email, but now everytime I come onto CDI I get that old pop up telling me I have an unread PM.  It seems others may be getting that too.  Is there a way to shut that off?

Bummer-I understand about having to close it, but I had some info in my PM's that I needed!

I would have to go in the database and wipe them out. So I'll do that. I may be able to download a bunch of pms. I'm not certain how since I made a pledge not to read them. I only see the line item for the table in the database. If I downloaded them in a text file, I'd have to read them to sort them and that's a moral dilemma for me. To add to that, someone might have said something about me that they'd rather me not see. And quite frankly, I'd rather not see it if that is the case. If there is a another solution, I'll see what I can do.

I don't know if it's technically feasible - perhaps reinstate the PM function for 24 hours to enable people to delete stuff and save addresses/phone numbers/whatever else, then shut it down for good?

Um, I deleted the pms to stop the pop up message pop up from happening. That is a good idea, though. Sorry I did not think of it before.
