HI everyone!

Look what walked in here this afternoon.
I'm trying to decide if we should stock this ring- it's very eye catching.
The center stone is dramatic- in many ways.
Look at those outspoken corners!

Then there's the large open culet- a flat facet at the very bottom of the stone.
You can see through the stone at that point.
Still it looks like a three carat, comes in a heavy 18kt white gold ring with 1.20ct tw of half moons for about $15k

What does everyone think of this one?

What are the stats on the center stone other than the depth?

Looks great on Cori's hand, as usual!  I think someone looking for a lot of caratage in a gorgeous emerald cut stone and step cut side stones will be blown away!  Very beautiful and unique design.

OMG, OMG. That is a dream ring for WM. Em cut with step cut MOONS! Unusual, dramatic corners, endless concentric glitter. I'm going to bed. I am going to go dream about this ring.

That ring is gorgeous; I love the symmetry and the concentric lines; and it is very unusual.  I don't care for large rings, but I would consider buying this one.....well if I had the bucks.

There's a lot going on there. I hate to say it but I don't love this one and I think it might look odd if you can see through the stone? I dunno. It isn't talking to me, as most ECs do?

Of course, in real life, it might be drop dead gorgeous. I'm guessing that's often the way with more unusual stones and rings.

I am torn on this one.  I love a diamond that looks to be 2 cts more than it really is, and I love the prongs, but the side stones aren't working for me.  Like Jen said, a little too much going on.  That said, it is very unique and I wouldn't turn it away should my DH want to surprise me (HAHAHA!).

I like the side stones, and I think it's value priced for someone looking for maximum weight.  My only concern would be the open culet.  I prefer my ECs to be deeper with a closed culet so you can look into the diamond and get the "hall of mirrors" effect.  But that's just my opinion.  Someone else might not care that it's shallow and want more finger coverage for the money.

Ok, I just had another look and it's growing on me. As GL says, I don't think I wouldn't send it back if DH surprised me with it either.

I have more chance of discovering I can fly than of finding this ring in my home though, so probably not something I need to worry unduly over.  Grin

I'm not sure about the open culet. It reminds me of aquamarines, for some reason. It's a very impressive ring though, lots of finger coverage and I bet it's on fire in the right lighting.

You all are so lucky.  I've written the same LONG response here twice and hit the wrong button twice, sending my long-winded post into never-never land!

The short version is: I love the way this ring looks.  It is an unforgettable stunner.  However, I'd fixate on the open culet.  Plus, although on it's own the extreme shallow depth wouldn't bother me (as long as the diamond "performs"), the fact that this is the second "weird" attribute to the center diamond would worry me.  If I purchased the ring, eventually, I'd fret about what else I COULD have purchased for $15K that wouldn't have had a "questionable" center stone.

Instead, I'd spend more and ask David to find a similarly sized center stone and like half-moon sides, and build a new ring in platinum.

That being said, I can totally understand losing sleep over this ring (I may lose a few ZZZ's myself tonight) and I understand how this ring could be absolutely perfect for someone with different priorities.  Afterall, it is big.  It is one-of-a-kind. And, it IS a KNOCKOUT.

Yes, this isn't just a random item of stock, it's someone's ring. If you know what I mean!  To the person this was made for, it will be the only ring they ever want.

Does this help?

Usually, I just go with my gut.
it's really not easy deciding what to buy sometimes.

This one is unusually challenging.
I'm really with Trinkette- although finding a deeper stone this big, with this type of corners is going to cost a lot more....

Oh dear am I the odd one out ? I really don`t like this ring. Something doesn`t seem right about it. Fraid I don`t look at culets, depths or any of the technical stuff, I go with whether I`d wear it or buy it. Sorry.

No, I had similar misgivings. I think the ring will steal someone's heart though. Just not mine, yours, GL's or Trinkettes!

At first I really liked this ring; the flat culet is really cool because it provides a visual break for all thats going on with this ring.

However, if I was spending $15K I would not want to see my finger through the back of the ring.  That makes it a deal breaker for me.

A saturated colored stone cut like that, yes; but never a diamond.

I think I am going to shy away from this one......
Although I love the concept, that center diamond bothers me too much......
The shape of the stone, the look of the step cut sides- I love all that....but the open culet would bother me

I must be that person b/c the open culet is what I love about it. I love OMCs and OECs with larger culets. RBCs have never been my thing, they're just kinda eh to me, I guess I just see them too often. I love quirky, different stones that have that little something extra that sets them apart from everything else.

If I had 15K, this baby would so be mine.

O M G.
jewelk, I'm with you. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this ring. Completely wonderful. I love those open culets on the old cuts too, but hadn't seen square cuts with open culets until David found those earrings that GL bought. WHICH I'm still kicking myself over for letting them get away...first dibs, GL!!

I love this ring, period.

Oooo I too love this ring!!!  The only thing That would bother me is that you can see your skin color perfectly through the open cutlet and maybe a platinum basket with a closed bottom/back would help to reflect the light back through so you wouldn't notice that.

Look how much interest and debate this ring has generated already - maybe it would be a good item to have in stock? Everytime someone loved it, they could end up buying a custom version for megabucks! This ring could be a ticket to early retirement! Grin

Since David has decided not to stock the ring that started this thread, I am posting a pic of a similar ring with 63.9% depth (though the corners are not as dramatic).  For me, the depth makes all the difference.  What do you guys think of this one?

it's not the depth for me, it's the open culet.  i must say, i hate open culets.  i don't know why but i feel like i would always be staring at the culet and  i would miss out on the beauty of the ring.  i know that one of these days i really want an OEC but i'm going to have to find one without an open culet because they really do just drive me nuts!
