Hi everybody
could you have a look at this photo below, and what you think?

If it was a given that both the sapphires have the type of sparkly brilliance we love (they do), which one would you prefer.  The ones on the left are a bit deeper, darker blue.  The ones on the right are a more Ceylon light blue

Good answer, Lynne!  <applauding loudly>   Grin

I don't like very dark sapphires.  I have a ring with dark Australian sapphires, and while the ring was very inexpensive, the sapphires don't look at all lively.  They're just too dark.

BUT-- medium blue can be loveliest of all, and lighter sapphires can be pretty, too.

So I'd say it depends on how dark the dark ones are!

I actually really love the darker sapphires.  If I do anything with sapphires down the road I would prefer a fairly dark blue.

Are all of those going into stock David??

After about 5 min of looking at the picture, I think I would go with the darker ones.  That is of course provided they had that sparkle!

Same sparkle, absence of windows... all things being equal, I think that I prefer the richness of the darker blues. But, then, I THINK that they would suit ME better (*sigh* I could be wrong).  However, I toally agree with Robin, for HER, I'd pick the lighter blues.  dontknow  That doesn't help at all, does it?

I like darker ones that aren't too black... You know what I mean?

I guess the best way to describe it... You're looking at a stone, and in the middle it seems... clearer?? Like you're looking through a window (the frame of the window would be the circumference of the stone)? Someone else explain it better?

Like dead in the  middle??? Ummmmmmmmm

Darker all the way! *waves aussie flag*

Just a personal prejudice, but I've always found the lighter sapphires to look a little... lab-created, to put it kindly. The darker the sapphire, the prettier it is to me.

I would be tempted to pick through both bags and pick the brightest of the bright, so to speak....if it looks like its lit from within, its perfect.

Darker for me too! Rich velvety blue in a mid to dark tone is just my favourite! Lovely.

EMJ, lit from within is an excellent description!

I like the lighter to medium blue colour.  I have an art-deco ring with a sapphire that is so dark that is had been taken for a black diamond.  Actually I love it, but if I were buying a sapphire now I would definitely go for a lighter blue.  BTW if I hold the ring up (it has a very heavy yg setting 15 grammes) I can see it is really a dark medium but in the setting it is black, a bright black, if you know what I mean, but black.

Ahaha... GL, you're right!  I was thinking the same thing as I was writing my response here.  1087

Ms. K, a window is a see-through effect often caused or exaggerated when a colored stone is cut with improper angles. It is my understanding that a window refers to a washed-out area in the center of the colored stone that allows you to see through it (especially when viewed from above).  Windows can be in very pricey stones as well as less expensive stones, and they occur in ANY colored stone, light or dark. The window issue brings us back to the old cutter's dilemma... save as much stone (weight) as possible, yet, still retain as much color as possible.  For example, to keep carat weight up, a cutter may decide to shape in ways that leave a bigger stone with a windowin the middle. There's a balance in there somewhere...

I am having a hard time seeing the true tone of the lighter sapphires since they are all mixed together in a bag.    They both look just lovely...but I am leaning toward the darker blues.   When you say the word CEYLON....it makes me lean towards the lighter color bag.     Did that help?? Grin   Can you take a pic of them with each spilled out on a tray?  That would help ALOT!!

This is really hard!  If the darker ones are flashing royal blue, then I would go for the darker ones.  YUM!

I agree, if the darker ones are bright and full of life, I would gravitate towards those Smiley

Love the darker ones. Are you going to buy them?

The darker color is so nice together with some really white diamonds. A 5-stone band maybe?  Wink

Ahhhh, I like the darker ones - but only dark enough to know they are blue.  Tooo dark, and they look black.   Although......lighter ones can be quite stunning, that across the room sort of effect.
