believe it or not, it was damaged during setting.
We had finished a lovely platinum and 18kt yellow gold flower for it and the culet was broken during setting in a totally freak accident.
Even though the diamond still weighed 3.55cts- not a single point was lost- it looked like a bomb had gone off inside.
Sorry, I simply could not bear to take a picture.

AAAAnyway- this led to having a serious discussion with one of my oldest cutting buddies.
He said we had two options:
1) repair the stone, which would be apparent due to the way it was cut. If it was a crushed ice type pf stone, repair would be an easy choice- but this stone would loose it's lovely "brilliant" facet pattern.
2) re-cut the stone to a 2.90+- radiant, and in the process, gain the grade of Fancy Light Yellow
"That's what I'd do Rocky" is what he said...and what we chose to do.
It should be ready in two weeks.

Noooooooooo -okay

I just loved that funky cushion.  Can't wait to see how it turns out after the recut.

Lovely setting though.

Gosh, that was such a great stone.  It will be interesting to see the difference.  What will the recut do to the value?

What a shame...but at least it is "repairable"...and the stone will still be a large one.  Such a pity though, it was a nice cushion. Sad

That's really too bad.  I liked that funky cushion, but I'm sure it will make a beautiful radiant.

I actually felt a physical pain when I read that post! Here's to the new radiant, I hope it's every bit as beautiful as the cushion was!

What was the grade before? Fancy light yellow is quite a step up.

Better a diamond with a flaw than a pebble without

Confused42 sad4  That's so awful.  I'd be afraid to look even if you did post a pic.

Was this the victim?

If so, it's a shame -- that's a lovely stone.  But hey -- if the little bit of weight loss means an upgrade in color, that's not a bad trade all in all.  :-)

It was a $24,000 diamond that broke?!

And you're being understanding?

I love that you can turn this into a different cut--will you post before & after pics?
I'm coming late in the game, so have no idea what the stone looked like when you started.

Not that i want to see a train wreck--but I am soooo very curious to see the damaged stone--just to get an idea of what a cutter can do--I find the whole process fascinating.

OMG= it's ready!!!!

and I have to say...WOWOWOWOWOW

It's now a 3.18ct radiant cut- but a very cool one.
Large corners and a teeny table-

i'd say its W-X color- we did not get the Fancy light we were hoping for, but we also expected a stone less than 3cts.........Ill snap some photos this evening.

I'm regretting this now- but when I saw the smashed stone I could not bear to take a picture...here it is prior to the damage...

I love the way it turned out.  What I like best is the patterning along the center line (top to bottom) of the stone.  It's almost curvy in places where I am used to seeing straight lines.  Nicely done!

The color difference is amazing too!
