Hi Everyone!
I came across this parcel of brown rough diamonds.
Based on a number of factors, I am fairly sure they are not a quality suitable for cutting- they are to be used as they are.

The stones average 3.36cts ( about $800 each)
They feel really cool...the ultimate worry beads

Cufflinks would be a great idea. Wrap the stones in gold wire.

GREAT Idea Rio.
We actually got in a bunch of black diamond rose cuts which will be used (possibly) for a pair of cufflinks

I was thinking that these might make nice earrings- we can laser drill a hole and put a wire on them and dangle them "diamond shaped"

Interesting idea, D!  Because they have a really nice shape and sheen, I can see this sort of diamond rough in jewelry.  I think they'd make marvelous shirt studs, too.  Expensive as heck, but what a statement.

I've seen some bezel set with diamond halos around them as well and thought they were cool.  And some of the larger ones had an "X" over the stone to set it into place.  Some of those Xs were set with diamonds as well.

I also remember seeing one either tension set or just a semi bezel that looked neat as well.  I found them while looking for some custom made sterling rings at one point.  Small ring sizes lead me to places online that are known for doing custom work like that.

I don't want to show photos because I don't want to steal other people's work specifically, but I bet if you googled "rough set diamond" you could find some of what I've seen.  The settings were all fairly tall to allow for the shape of the rough, but there were some really creative ideas out there!

I like the dangle idea as well.

Since you can laser drill holes, how about using two as a lariat style necklace? When I first saw these, I thought how cool they'd be dangling all together (each on it's own unique-length chain) on a necklace. Heck, might as well throw a few faceted diamonds in as well... just for good measure.  Grin

I bet these DO feel great in you hand.

The Octahedrons are so cool. How, I wonder, is it that rough is always in that shape?

Actually, there's many irregular shaped rough diamonds.
Pear Shapes, Heart shapes, Marquises come from flatter rough, called "Mackel"

The reason many rough diamond crystals come up as octahedral is that the bonds between the carbon atoms that make up the crystal are weakest on the faces of an octahedron. Macles (mackles? mackels? mackerels? 372 Huh?) are the other common form of diamond rough, and are actually still octahedra - just "squashed" so that two opposite faces are much larger than the other six, thus giving the impression of flat crystals.

In fact, diamond will cleave (relatively) easily along those directions, and this fact is often exploited to "cut" large crystals - cleaving is by far the most efficient way of cutting diamonds, both in terms of time and wastage.

One of the most famous cases of a cleavage cut is the first cut - in fact two cuts - of the Cullinan rough, which was of very irregular shape, but still had the same internal structure "easily" split along octahedral planes. In fact, it was so "easily" split that in the first attempt at cleaving by Joseph Asscher (yes, that one) the diamond stayed in one piece, but the tool broke...

They could be used in some kind of cage pendant of the person`s own design, also with matching drop earrings.
I found this design but I should imagine there`d be umpteen variations on the same theme, possibly with a small yellow/brown/white/pink RB diamond hanging from the bottom or attached to the top.

I would definitely wear those dangle earrings!  They give off a sort of funky vibe.  I like them.

Lishkare, I've always wanted to try something like that for a pendant... wrapping diamonds around a larger stone or faceted gem. Just don't have a big enough gem yet...  Grin

I like the idea, Awestruck, epsecially with the added dangly diamond(s).

OK, is SOMEONE going to try something here? I'd love to see a finished piece...

I was really surprised to see there`s quite a few designers out there who use rough diamonds. Here`s some designs I found by one such designer. I must admit I`m beginning to see rough diamonds in a new light.

But add a cage something like this
