tantrum2   GRRRR!  Smarty-pants!  I know about the etchings.  I was hoping it was some wild sort of cut for a real diamond.

 Grin Grin Grin

GIA doesn't have the word Asscher cut in any of their reports.  They call it square emerald cut.  But the industry knows it as Asscher cut.  Smiley

Modified square step cuts however, I think it depends on how many steps there are on the crown and the pavilion.  I'm not sure of the details myself.  Maybe David can shed some light.  Grin

Another thing, they do call the Royal Asscher a Cut-Cornered Square Step Cut on GIA reports.

I think an emerald cut by definition has three crown steps. Anything else is called "step cut" by GIA, which is even more generic. A Royal Asscher has four, so it's called cut-cornered square step cut.

HI Everyone!

Re: what is an "Emerald Cut", as opposed to a "Step Cut" in the eyes of GIA...
Some of it is a judgement call.
omc- there are actually only 3 steps on the top of the Royal Asscher Cut- I myself had thought it was 4 and learned that it is indeed, 3.

I also believe that most Royal Asscher Diamonds would actually be called "Octagonal Step Cut"

We are working on getting more specific answers form GIA on this one.....
Our source tells us that the difference between "Cut Cornered Square Step Cut" and Octagonal Step Cut" is a judgement call based on the grader's opinion of how large the corners appear.

Ok so this is just an educated guess on my part, but it seems like every step cuts grade that GIA give, the diamond has at least 5 steps on the pavilion.

Hahahahahahaha! I know you all are seriously trying to sort this out, but, if you go back and read these last few posts, it is quite a tongue twister – or the beginnings of some sort of sick twister nursery rhyme!

Here a cut, there a cut
Five steps, four steps, three steps

Asscher cut, emerald cut
Escher cut?

Octagonal, square, rectangular
Cut-cornered, modified, royal

Stairs and windmills
Crowns and pavillions

Asschers to elbows
There's no doubt about it...

One way or the other
It's going to be a STEP cut!

Uh, David.... Huh?

I was looking for the uber-large, in-your-face jewel page, and I can't find it any more.  I figured that the Big Bopper would have held a place of honor there, even if he doesn't stay in your house.  Did it get removed?  Am I looking in the wrong place?

Hummm, not a bad idea, WM. Like I said on the Smithsonian thread, it seems the museum's gem collection could use an infusion of some newer patrons. Perhaps, the diamond's current owner would like to collaborate with David to create a KILLER piece and, then, DONATE the piece to the National Collection?  Grin

Of course, I'd volunteer to go in the museum and CLEAN it every few weeks or so... just because I am socially conscious and responsible.  angel

I also believe that jewellery's quality improves being worn and loved. No problem there, right?
