There's a number of different areas I focus on, when shopping for a sapphire.

In the case of colored stones, such as sapphires I see many different shades of blue- the actual hue.
Just a little bit of violet- or if it's too light- it starts to look like a Tanzanite- nice stone- but a Sapphire has it's own look.

Then next thing I notice is the liveliness- or sparkle.
I'm a diamond guy, so any stone needs to have a lot of life to catch my eye.

Things like shape and cut come further down in the selection process for me.
The cut is judged differently than diamonds- many desirable sapphires may be as deep as the are wide ( 100% depth ratio)

What do you guys like in sapphires?

Hey David!

I like my sapphires to be lively -- like you said.  It must sparkle.  I also like the color to be vivid or electric blue.  However, the cornflower colored sapphires are pretty, too.

I like the cuts to be cushion or emerald cut.  I've seen radiant cut sapphires, and I just don't like them.  I think radiant should be reservef for diamonds.  On a sapphire, it just doesn't look right to me. IMO

I don't think sapphires should have too many inclusions (like a ruby or an emerald) either.

Personally, I don't care whether or not the stone has been heat treated.  I know that some people prefer a non-treated stone, but it's such a common, accepted procedure.

Here are additional example of a blue that I love, too.

By the way, did you get that beautiful sapphire in your inventory?  If so, you know you can't post a beautiful stone and not give us the specs on it!! whip3

I like the stone you have in your inventory, along with the one in the video! I like darker sapphires, but they still need to be transparent, I really don't like "midnight blue" sapphires. Inclusions are so much easier to see in a sapphire, but they always detract from the beauty of any stone.

To tell the honest truth - I would like ANY color, pink, blue, purple, orange whatever! So long as it has the transparency to it. And of the two RedRaider posted - I like the first better.

i like a rich blue in a sapphire but i also want to to be light enough and transparent enough to have a real glitter.  i really love emerald asscherish cuts in sapphires as long as the steps are apparent, but i also love mixing them with the crushed ice look of diamonds.....so many possibilities!

I quite like the color of the two sapphires RR posted.  For me, I'd consider a heat treated sapphire, but I'd rather have a natural one.  Same with an Emerald.  Something about going au natural is a nice touch you know?

I would LOVE to see DBL carry a few sapphires on their site!! For me, part of the reason I don't own them is I would NEVER trust the vendors! I have seen way to many sapphires or gemstones that had terrible windows.

David
I don`t know much about the technicalities of sapphires which sometimes is a good thing because it allows my eyes to be my judge. I actually love sapphires but not particularly the pink or purple ones.
It tends to be firstly the colour which draws me to them and then the cut. You see that flash of colour and zing go your eyes, especially if the sapphire is married with great diamonds.
The cut makes a huge difference and sadly there are many sites selling badly cut cheaper sapphires which lack any kind of sparkle and look dull or lifeless. To me a great sapphire is one which if it`s blue it reminds you of a new born baby`s eyes, if it`s yellow it makes you think of hot sunny days, if it`s clear it reminds you of trickling water, if it`s green you can amost feel the grass and if it`s pink, it`s hot.
Sorry for the not so techo - speak lol

I am a HUGE fan of the pink, orange and yellow sapphires! But if I had to choose a blue then the corn flower blue is one of my favorite hues. Same goes for the electric royal blue!

I too love the cornflower blue sapphires.  I like those much better than the really dark blue ones.  That one is beautiful David.

Luvn~

They're not cherry picked, but they are natural sapphires...   Wink

Well, I'll be.  Just when I was about to make up my mind about a new diamond ring, David goes and posts this sapphire!  Now, y'all know why I started that other thread about not making up my mind!!

I see it with EC diamond sidestones.  Or, even step-cut traps.  I think an EC sapphire deserves to be the shining star of a ring.

If I was getting one of the cushion shaped stones, I'd put them in a halo.

Ahhhh... the possibilities....

I love sapphires!

I look for a vibrant, lively stone with a rich, mid blue colour. I like them to look velvety, if you know what I mean. No zoning or extinction and no window, but a deeply saturated, even blue colour. With sparkle. Untreated. Great cut that brings out the personality of the stone.

I'm still waiting for my little sapphires to be reset (they tick all of the above) but I actually got a little tearful when I saw them for the first time, they are just so perfect. I'll be looking for a pear cut sapphire to set in a pendant next year, to go with them. (Um, this never ends, does it??)

YUP- Unheated PINK- WITH a GIA report!!!

Let's talk sparkle......In the photo on the above, you can see what I'm talking about.

The Sapphire on the left is quite a nice one. Believe it or not, in this particular case, the Sapphire on the left had a higher price than the stone on the right- which is the stone I chose. It's making it's new owner very happy as you read this.

That's what I look for- brilliance......
