Hey - since I just got my pink lemonade ring, do any of you know if the vinegar solution would be harmful to it?  I've never owned pink gold before.

I just read through this entire thread (which morphed into potato chips and HD sticky toffee pudding i/c)!  I did try the HD and it was yum!!!!!!!!

I'd also like to know if it would be ok with an emerald? I know they can't go in the ultrasonic, but my recent DSA is an emerald ring surrounded by diamonds and I can't bear the thought of them getting dirty. (In the way that some people feel of their children, I suppose...)

I need a way of cleaning the diamonds without hurting the fragile, precious darling little emerald (ok, I'm obsessing now).

Any ideas?

Hey Everyone!
It's a great question, and common sense dictates that there should be no problem.
However,  we don;t have any hard experience to allow us to answer definitively on the vinegar question......

Not sure about cleaning emeralds with vinegar... but it worked brilliantly on my diamonds when I diluted some with water in my ultrasonic - my diamonds are totally sparkling!!!!!!

Oh I HATE to say this.  But I believe it's true.  I think I've found a commercial cleaning solution that works as well (I think BETTER) than vinegar.  And it doesn't smell........

Attending the gem show that stops here several times a year, I walked past a booth demonstrating this stuff.  I've seen them a million times and have always walked right past because of my prior experiences with these solutions.  I don't know WHY I stopped there.  I handed over my freshly "vinegared" Asshcerish Emerald to be cleaned.  I was floored by the difference.  Either  I haven't been using the vinegar correctly, or this stuff IS better.  Anyway, I bought it and have been exceedingly happy with it.  AND, it's reusable.  You just strain it through cheesecloth or something like it to filter out the gunk and it's good to go.  You can clean soft stones with it but you can't leave them soaking.  Those are a dip and rinse kinda thing.

Again, it's given me at least the same results as I've gotten with vinegar. and doesn't smell.  I think they have a website too.  No heating either.

Oh, it's called Jewel Brite.  I hope I am not hallucinating about the results.  I don't think I am....

I have purchased something that sounds like that.  It is called Best Solutions jewelry and glass cleaner.   It works nicely....and especially on softer type stones............but I like the WV better.   It doesn't leave a film like this does.   ~Ronda

The emerald ring is driving me mad now. I need to clean the diamonds, but I'm scared of hurting the emerald. It's starting to look like the kind of ring I see on people in stores / at work etc and think "why don't you clean that ring??"

I'm going to try gently warmed vinegar.  If the worst comes to the worst, I will have it re-oiled from time to time.

My mom has a "lab-created" emerald ring that I cleaned by dipping a soft toothbrush in the vinegar and rubbing lightly.  It seemed to work fine.  I thought that was safer than submerging it.

I wanted to learn about cleaning my diamonds and I ended up feeling very hungry.  Those vinegar and salt chips - loverly.  And I must say there is nothing like good old fish and chips and the newspaper just adds something (what??) but let us say "atmosphere".

I finally got around to trying Jewel Brite and I have to say that I really liked it.  I wouldn't say that's it better cleaner than the white vinegar, plus it's more expensive, but it does smell a whole heck of a lot better.  I would say I get about the same sparkle as the hot WV and no trace of film and the best thing about it is I don't have to hear the crabbing about the smelly vinegar.  Good tip, Bunny!

I use JewelBrite too and have been really happy with it.   I especially like to polishing paste that they make.  It is more expensive, but it does last a long time.  And, I get mine at the gem and jewelry show, so that way I at least don't have to pay shipping.
