ETA we're all into keeping fit and weight training here. It's been a curious side effect for a diamond forum, but since DJ started the weightloss challenges, there's been no stopping us!

Welcome Pip!

What type of books to you like?  I'm just starting to get used to the idea that I'm not longer in school, and I now get to pick my own reading material...  I'm looking for new ideas.

Hi annie--

Sorry for hijacking this thread but I wanted to post some good books I've read recently. Anyways, I am an avid reader myself. I do like guy type novels such as Flyboys, Flag of Our Fathers and The Tender Bar which have been awesome. Books I think you would really enjoy would be:
Devil In the White City (overall best book I've read in a long time-- everyone I recommend this book to loves it!!)
Waiting for Snow In Havana
The Memory Keeper's Daughter (DW loved this one)
The Glass Castle
Kite Runner
The Breathtaker

Right now I'm reading Wild at Heart (Guy book but women should read it too--very, very good!) This is the second time I'm reading this book!!! Love it! This has to be a "must read" for your new hubby or any guy for that matter--especially the guys on this forum about to get married  ;)Enjoy !!

If you're into historical fiction, you should try the Phillipa Gregory novels.  She has done a fabulous job of recreating events from Georgian England and the court of Henry VIII.

Although, I really do wish she would get a better editor.  There are misspelled words throughout, and the grammar is atrocious.  Of course, that's the English teacher coming out in me!  The writing is well done, though!  I can't put the books down.

Try On Borrowed Wings.  It is a story about a woman who goes to Yale at a time when only men went.  She dresses as a man.  Also Better, a book about how medicine can be improved-incredibly interesting.

I'm sorry to say it Pip, but you are a hotty.  So, I'm old enough to almost be your mom.  Just because one is on a diet doesn't mean one can't look in the bakery window.  But, I digress...............  I am a personal trainer and fitness instructor as well.  It is incredibly interesting how the body works and how much one can do with diet and exercise to change one's physique or health.  It is also incredibly annoying how difficult it is to maintain the discipline to make these changes.  My hat is off to all of the folks on the weight loss thread who are really making a super effort to lose weight.  Hear hear! Cool Grin Smiley

Is it raining there, Pip? Most of Englandshire seems to be under water now.  Have never seen floods like this before. Hope you're safe and dry.

Hi Pip!  I'm originally from County Durham though I don't brag about it!   Grin  I prefer to claim North Yorkshire to be honest and rarely venture over the border to Darlington when I'm home - I'm far happier in Harrogate!

Great pics - the guys are certainly outnumbered here on CDI so it's always nice to welcome another one.

Hey Pip--welcome. Reading thru this thread I see that you model for Bvlgari. Are you exclusive with them or do you have an agency you belong to? Did you get to model any of their watches??
Modeling is great money but very time consuming. I modeled in college (which was over 25 years ago--you were only 2 years old--now that's sobering!) I was "discovered" (hate that term) when a photographer took shots of my girlfriend and I with a zoom lense. We were playing around on a tire tube in the middle of a lake. Now that I think of it--that was pretty dam sketchy of him. Anyhow--someone got a hold of the prints and they came back and offered us jobs. I was a poor college student and thought --what the hell. One job lead to another and I was making huge money for a college student. I'd be called for a go see and sit in the corner with my organic chemistry book while the other male models tried to upstage each other for the job. Nine times out of ten, I'd get the job because I'd laugh alot, crack a few jokes and never took it seriously. These guys thought they were going to make a career out of it and were way to competitive--always cracked me up to watch them. I did a couple of commercials (similar to the orange crush ads ---remember those--they were the ones with all the teenagers waterskiing or horsing around), primarily did catalog work for clothing. One campaign landed in the airports--(you know--the ones that are backlit and are about 10 times the size of real life). I hated going into airports while that ad was running--not that anyone would recognize me--it just plain weirded me out! You never know what they'll use your shots for. One time I was in a  pharmacy about to check out when I looked over and saw a lifesize cardboard cutout of me holding film. Made me shudder-LOL!
Man, I haven't thought about this in about 20 years...sorry to go on like this. I guess the point I was trying to make is that I love Bvlgari watches. When I modeled clothing, some of the stylists let me keep a few pieces. Don't think they'd do that with a $25,000 watch-- do you? LOL!

Those are long gone--being military and moving so many times--that box was burned!!! Actually--I really didn't have a box. I would just do my job and leave. You sign a release so you never know what they'll use the photos for. A few times if there was ad copy printed I'd save an ad in a file (after so many years it doesn't mean much--almost like a different life)--back then I really never kept a portfolio or anything.  Funny thing though--a few years back I was reading the Sunday paper and there was an old photo of me reduced to a "coupon" for the product I was advertising. I cut it out and saved it because I thought it was so funny they would use stock photos from back in the '80's.(business must be bad).
And BTW--my photos weren't as "beef cake" as pips. He's really ripped. I was modeling just when the all-american blond blue eyed model was going out of favor and the 80's slim euro look was hot. Timing is everything...

Well...........the plot thickens with our man djm! hmmmmmmmmmmm
Speaking of the plot thickening BR-- I just remembered this story from back then...One job I got was for an Instructional Manual for a piece of equipment that was brand new to the market. It was really high paying per hour for limited exposure --bells should've gone off but I really wasn't very selective back then. Money was money-LOL! Anyhow, the agency told me to meet the stylist and the art director at a warehouse outside the city. They gave me the address and I quickly stuffed it n my pocket. The next morning I drove to this really sketchy part of the city to the address they had scribbled on a small piece of paper. When I got there there wasn't anyone waiting for me. Since it was before cell phones I just sat and waited 20 minutes before another car drove up. It was the make up artist who I recognized from another job. We spoke a little and I asked if she knew anything more about the shoot. She said she didn't so we just sat there waiting without speaking. Two other cars and a van pulled up after that. Neither one of us recognized the players but we were told to get into a back of the van and they would drive us to the location that the shoot would take place. The van had all its windows blacked out in the back and once they closed the door, you could not see the outside. We drove for almost an hour.  When the van stopped, the back door opened and we found ourselves in the middle of a corn field with this huge barn about 1000 feet away. I thought we were going to get murdered! That was it--I was finished. There was no turning back. I was quickly ushered to the barn where they opened the huge barn doors. We stepped in and the doors were closed behind us. It took awhile for my eyes to adjust to the blackness and the only thing I could see was painted blacklight reflective arrows on the ground that lead to an "X" in the center of the barn. I could hear talking all around me but I couldn't see anyone. Once I was standing on the "X" I was given black pants and a black turtle neck that I had to change into under this spotlight. The make up artist came over and did her thing and they were the only two people (aside from the photographer) I saw the entire shoot. There was this huge machine next to me that had to do with something with digital photography. Anyways, there was someone in the dark that was speaking in Japanese and an interpretter that was telling the stylist what I was suppose to do for each shot. At one point, there was a lull in the shoot and I was just standing there waiting for the interpretation. I don't know what possessed me at that point but I reached over a pressed this green button that was on the machine. To this day, I have no idea why I did that!  All of a sudden, the machine made this loud noise, almost like a copier machine jamming, then silence. From the pitch dark room, the Japanese guy starts yelling in Japanese for about 5 minutes straight. I was motionless. Then the interpretter says(after a long pause)..."why did you do that?" in a very low tone. Well, it took 2 and half hours to fix the machine before we could continue with the shoot. I thought if they weren't planning on murdering me before--they certainly were considering it after that--LOL!.  It was a stressful day to say the least but they ended up paying me for the additional 2 1/2 hours!!

Man, I got to stop hijacking this thread...sorry Pip!
