Welcome BK!  That's a beautiful collection you have-and the photos are lovely!

10 years ago when I started the business, I made a decision that we would not carry any treated diamonds of any sort.  That does not make treated diamonds bad in any way.  Just that we only carry the natural ones.

There are some colors that you just can't find a natural... for example blue.  So of course, what does everyone want?  Blue diamonds!

I can't blame anyone for buying irradiated or heated diamonds... but as the type of stones we offer?  As far as I can foresee, it will stay all natural.

We've never tried a pink diamond butterfly, but there should always be a first-time!

Welcome!  You know who else likes butterflies?  Maria Carey.  I think she has a butterfly ring similar to yours.  You are in good company.

Your pictures are beautiful.  I cannot wait for tips.

Hi BK. Welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing your photos.

As for people in the UK not knowing much about brown diamonds, you'll have to meet DJ. She has an entire collection of them. And she's a Brit.

Hi there everyone  me again

I had a bit of spare time so  here are a few basic tips to help you get good quality photos of your gorgeous diamonds and gems!!

I dont know what camera's you use so i have based these hints on using a compact digital camera.
Photographing jewellery can be hard because of lighting and using the right aperture settings.
if you use a SLR camera you want to use a longer shutter speed  (F16.0 ) .

Hint 1
Give your jewellery a good clean because any specks of dust dirt and grime will
show up on the photo.

Hint 2
Take some time to set up a background for your jewellery photograph
as nice composition will make your average photo all of a sudden look
a lot more professionall.Use a colour that will make your
piece of jewellery really stand out .
Try and find a flat surface in a quiet area of your home ideally with
a good source of natural light.

Hint 3
Now the camera Smiley  turn it on and set it to the macro or "flower"
setting. This setting is pre-set for close up photography
and will allow you to focus tightly on the center of your jewellery.

Hint 4
For the best results , you should ideally rest your camera on a hard surface but
if you wish to hold your camera hold it a few inches from the jewellery that you are
photographing.
Take your time and hold your focus button down halfway to focus the shot.
When you are happy with how your photo is going to look take your photo.

You might find that you have to move/hold the camera closer or farther back.
Most compact cameras determine the flash for you , but if possible ,
always shoot in natural light.
If you want to add some more "sparkle" to your photo you could use a small torch and try adding light from a
few different angles till you find what you like best .
You can be as artistic as you want to be , i noticed a lot of you already use petals and flowers and they make great backgrounds Smiley
The more you practise the better results you will get!!

Just a quick note ..... if your photo needs cropping and you have photoshop or GIMP
If you save the file size larger when you crop your photo it wont lose as much quality

Hopefully you find these hints useful and i look forward to seeing all your pics  4

BK - can I ask for a tip please?

I own a number of colour change gemstones such as Alexandrite, Colour Change Sapphire, Colour Change Garnet etc.  I have absolutely no problem capturing the incandescent light colour - in fact the camera will even sometimes show a much stronger change or one that isn't there!  However, capturing the daytime, natural light colour of the gem is almost impossible.

For example, Alexandrite is an Emerald Green in daylight.  I find it virtually impossible to photograph.  The only way I've found is to take the picture from about a mile away and then crop in.  The closer I get to the gem, the more the colour change is apparent.  In fact I can look at an Alexandrite and it'll look green, look through the camera lens and it's purple/red.

I once spoke to a photographer who said that in the case of Alexandrite (and most colour change gemstones) she'd had to resort to using Photoshop to alter the colours.  I can't believe thats the only way!!!

What am I doing wrong please?

Hi Cockneysparrow

have you a photo you could show me i should be able to tell you what's going wrong from the pic.
and what camera are you using ?
You might just need to change a camera setting .

I am sure they is a way to take the photographs natural without having to colour wash in photoshop.
Photoshop has made photographers  lazy   Angry

I had a similar problem myself recently when taking some shots of some mystic topaz jewellery for a local photographer but got it right in the end.
I will upload a pic to show you .

Hi BK

Mmmm, mystic topaz is different I'm afraid because although it radiates different colours, it doesn't actually have a colour change.  I'm using a Canon IXUS 750 and have tried adjusting the white balance, the macro (back to normal and back to macro again), the lighting etc etc.  NOTHING sorts it out!

Here's an example.  Firstly this is an Alexandrite that has absolutely NO colour change.  By that I mean that the daytime and evening colour is green.  No hint of purple or red but look what happens in the photos.  I can't tell you how I struggled to get the "green" photo!

I promise you, the above Alex NEVER looks purple apart from in photographs!

Ok, here are some that definitely do change colour.  They are all a true emerald green during the day (and I'm often asked if they're Emeralds) and turn Amethyst purple under electric light - I know I said I have problems photographing the green colour but trust me, these photos are the result of about 9,000,000 shots!

To give you an idea of how Alexandrite changes colour I've managed to capture it on video (not great and not as phenomenal as you see with your eyes and you certainly can't see the green well) but this should give you an idea:

I have the same problem with Colour Change Garnets and also Colour Change Sapphires (all have a different colour in natural light and incandescent light).

Any help or ideas you can give would be really really appreciated!

I meant the mystic topaz is similar because it is tricky to photograph.
often only one colour comes out in the shot.

They is a few things you can try to start with , im afraid photography is bit of an science and takes practice and patience.
What i suggest is that you find some sort of reflective surface in your house that you can use to shoot your ring on  the fabric from the ring box will absorb some of the light.
Im not 100% sure what colour you are after photographing or is it the stone actually changing colour you want to get ??
It is not an impossible stone to photograph how you want to but it might take some time to figure the right lighting out for the colour you want .

Keep your camera on the macro setting and dont use the flash , you will need to use natural light so you need to photograph your jewellery on the window shelf if possible .
rest your camera on a solid surface because extra movement can make ugly camera shake on the photo.

Now you will need a small torch ( you know those micro sized ones people use on keyrings ) these are perfect to add some fill in light .
i would suggest photographing the ring slightly from one side and point the torch light  behind the stone .
see what happens ??
if this does not work try the torch in a few more different angles .

If you still dont have any luck i will explain some more tricks that could help

Let me know how you get on  Smiley
