Hello All,
I am new to this site. I recently lost the center stone out of my Eng. Ring and have my heart set on a colored diamond. Have yet to decide between yellow, orange-yellow or brown. I would LOVE an Orange but the cost will def. play part. Not in the tax bracket to be able to afford a Pure Orange, Blue, Green, etc. My hubby's getting there but it will be another 10-15 yrs. before that happens. In the mean time I'm going to be happy with a yellow or brown. I'm on DBL every day and I fall in love with a new stone daily. I'm fickle what can I say. I am now in talks with the infamous David for a friend of mine. I am helping him design his future wifes' ER. This has been such a fun experience and I can not wait to view the final product. I have enjoyed reading all of your comments and posts. Looking forward to reading more and want to thank those of you for sharing your vast knowledge reg. diamonds. I thought I knew quite a bit about Diamonds but have learned that I really am just a novice. When I find that perf. stone I will be asking for help designing my future ring and hope that you all will be just as helpful to me as you have been with others.

Thanks for reading,
Kris

Welcome Kris!  I am so glad you found us.  About a year ago I bought my yellow diamond.  I had to scrap my original engagment ring due to damage and I finally got my yellow dream.  Just recently I set it into my dream setting (though I didn't know what it was for almost a year LOL).

I hope you find your dream stone soon and I know we'll be thrilled to help you design the whole ring!

Welcome, Kris!
I bet you're having so much fun helping your friend out.  Wait until you design your OWN!  Of course, none of us here are short on opinions, so don't be afraid to ask.  In the meantime, glad you could join us.

Thanks to you both for the replies! I am having the MOST fun helping out. We have the center stone picked out. I have no clue on how to upload photos so if you are interested next time you are on DBL look at R3963. It is a 2.07 radiant cut yellow.  radiant GORGEOUS! It will be a halo design rounded not square with graduated rounds on the sides, all done in plat. Hopefully by the time this ring is complete I will have learned how to upload photos and will be able to share.

Hello Kris, welcome to CDI.

No photos of the ring, but linking to a DBL image is very easy! Here is R3963

All you need to do is to copy the URL of the image you want to point to, and enclose it in IMG tags, like this:

Code:

OMC,
Thank you so much. I believe I can follow those instructions easily enough  cross. When I spoke with David he told me that the stone is absolutely beautiful in person.  It's a little nerve wrecking designing a ring for someone else. I'll either end up being a great friend or a huge disappointment. It's not often I get to spend someone elses money let alone this much of it so it's a risk I;m willing to take, lol. In your expert opinion what do you think of this stone and also do you think the color is yellow enough that it will be easily identified as a fancy yellow?? We prefer the lighter shades but def. want it to be obviously yellow when looked at. Thanks again for your help!

Welcome Kris!! The goodies here are amazing aren't they? I know what you mean about falling in love with a new stone everyday..... I am currently in love with a yellow brown emerald cut... *sigh* someday....... I hope you can stick around for awhile.

Hi Kris,  Welcome to CDI!  I'm kind of new here too...found David and all his friends just a couple of months ago.  I have to admit, I'm now on both sites everyday, several times a day...  tongue3  but I love to see the new stones and jewelry pieces that David puts on his site...and I love to see what's new with my diamond loving comrades...

BTW...That fl yellow radiant is beautiful!  I think after it's set in yellow gold and then wrapped in a halo,  you all be amazed at how much more the yellow color will show!  I can't wait to see it either!

I'm sorrry that you lost your center stone in your ER...that must have been an awful shock when you realized it was gone.  Have you picked out a shape for your next ring yet?  My first ER was a round, but many years later, I fell in love with rectangles and square shape diamonds.   So, for my 15th anniversary, my DH had my ER replaced with an Emerald cut diamond.  Love the rainbows I see in it everyday!.  Now, I've just ordered a white cushion diamond to be bezeled as a stacker with the yellow diamond that initally brought me to DBL in early March.   And even though this project is on it's way to being created...I have quite a wishlist that includes both beautiful light yellow and intence FY diamond rings from David's inventory.  Too many sparkling beautiful diamonds...not enough patients or money!   AGH!  faintthud

There will be plenty of yellow, don't worry. What type of setting are you thinking of?

OMC- It's going to be a halo setting with rounded corners and graduated rounds/brilliants on the sides set in plat. What won me over with that stone was the cut. It will sparkle a ton for her. I wish I could be there to see it in person when it arrives but Unfortunately they live in California and my Hubby and I live in Illinois so that isn't an option. I guess I'll have to settle for pictures and wait for the wedding to see it in person. TY again for your thoughts on the color. That was the only thing I was a bit nervous about. I was going to ask David the next time we spoke but now I don't need to;D .

Lovecolor- Thanks for the warm welcome. I also just found DBL a few months ago. I started looking for a new ring shortly after I lost my diamond Cry. I had my heart set on a colored diamond but thought there was no way ( I would like at least a 1.5) due to the outrageous prices of the ones I looked at in stores. I was so excited to find DBL because their stones are def. in my price range and beautiful. Of course the jewelers warned me not to use an online jeweler because they can't be trusted ha. I'm sure that's the case with some but one could say the same thing about some jewelery stores am I right. I did some research on DBL and found something in forbes mag. I went to look for it again, to link it and for the life of me can't find it again. As far as the shape for my new ER I also change my mind on that daily as well haha. At first I was set on a cushion but I love the double halo w/ a round/brilliant stone and a triple row pave' w/ a pear shape. IDK it will take me forever to make up my mind. After looking at so many of the picts. on this site I now am interested in a white diamond (D-F) halo setting with intense pink diamonds on top and sides. I like the three row pave' style. Do you know what I mean by that?  what are your thoughts on that? Can you try and pict. that? I think I'm just going to have to talk my hubby into buying me two rings  Wink

I love the pink halos surrounding a white diamond...I plan to use my original round ER diamond to do something similar, a pink halo dream, except I'd like to square off my setting a bit...like I said, I'm into straighter edges lately!  But it probably won't happen for a little while though...must be patient...yikes, I'm struggling big time with that one! )  Evil

Kris, getting back to your triple pink halo vision...WOW, that's all I can say!  I don't think I've seen it in more than a double version.  Did you find one similar on DBL website?  If so, what's the item number, loved to see it.   Grin

Lovecolor- I didn't mean a triple halo. Sorry what I wrote was a little confusing. I am really into the three row micro-pave' design. It can still be done in a halo setting. Let me look and see if I can find one on  another site to show what I want David to do for me. I will have DBL do one with this type of setting eventually. Whether it's for my ER or another one I choose at a later date will just depend on money and the type of stone I choose. I know what you mean about having patients. Patients has never been a virtue of mine. The good thing about that is it's not my husband strong suit either so usually if it's within budget and something I really want I don't have to wait all that long. Grin  You're into straighter edges lately what about color of pinks surrounding the white? I want a drastic contrast so I am hoping he will be able to get some intense pinks for it. Even if I have to sacrifice on the size of center stone a little. I also want a super white center (D-F) I think the striking contrast would be amazing. I'm going to go look for an example of what I mean by triple micro pave' so you can give me your opinion. What size/color is your original brilliant?

I'm not sure how pink I want my halo to be yet...the round white diamond I'm planning to use is 1.06 cts. and G in color.  When I chose my Emerald cut though, I wanted it to be whiter, because unfortunately, I'm one of those people who can see the difference between colorless and near-colorless and I wanted my next diamond to be a D or E in color.  I ended up getting a 1.85 ct. E in color, VVS2 and surrounded it with pave diamonds on all three sides of the shank.  So even though the Emerald cut doesn't sparkle like the round brilliant did, it gives off rainbows and the band sparkles plenty enough for me.  So, I'm going to have the white round diamond mounted in pink gold with the pink diamonds in a square like formation to give it a real "right hand" ring look.

N1oops03HL2             BYW Kris, I have to apologise for my spelling error earlier...I'm not a doctor so I don't need patients, but I do want too many DBL rings so I'm praying for more patience!        ( I never won a spelling contest and I never will ! )

lovecolor- patients or patience I knew what you meant and if you notice I did the same thing. I am terrible with that one. I make that same mistake all of the time. It drives my sister, who is a school teacher, nuts. You spelled it right just used wrong form of the word. I guess that would be a grammatical error.?  Either way in my opinion the point of using words is to get your point across and let people know what you are trying to communicate. If your understood then it's all good.

Your Emerald cut sounds absolutely beautiful. Is there a picture of it on here? I'd love to see it. I can't wait to see when it's surrounded in pink gold and pink diamonds. Sounds lovely!

I'm in a rush to finish online work, but Kris the ideas you have sound stunning.

I also hope you can post a photo of the ring you are helping with.  Sounds like a winner!

I will say that like you, I always dreamed of a colored diamond.  I never thought I could afford one.  Low and behold I found DBL and he found my dream diamond.  Very recently put into a dream setting for me.  I hope you get your lost diamond replaced soon though.  That's tough when your engagement ring is no longer wearable Sad

I just have to say I love pave & halos in general too.  Oddly enough my diamond ring has none of that (mostly due to being a blend of loves with my husband and I) but I do have a nice blingy anniversary band.  I also hope to create a colored stone halo some day for a RHR.

Enamel is nice, but it is fragile. Particularly on a ring or a bracelet (or more appropriately bangle?)... apart from the cost issue, repairs aren't easy to make either.

OMC- That is what I have read. It's such a shame because it really does look pretty. So obviously you wouldn't rec. for everyday use but for those special occasion items it would be ok? Or are you saying that you wouldn't invest much into a piece because of the repair cost being so high?

Also, I checked out your collection. Quite extensive and Very beautiful! I take it that it has been a labor of love acquiring such a large selection. I am not even close. I believe I have 4 pieces of quality jewelry, lol. Well I guess I should say 3 now considering I lost the center stone out of my ER. Pretty pathetic for someone who claims to love jewelry right. I'll get there some day!

The issue with enamel repairs is not so much the cost; it's finding someone willing and able to carry out the repair at all, and being sure that they don't make a dog's breakfast out of it. Cost is quite secondary, though it's not cheap. And the price you quoted above is definitely not cheap, so I expect some sophistication in workmanship that may mean even more expensive repairs...

For a special occasions piece enamel is fine; it also depends on the quality (materials, as well as workmanship) of the enamel. DW has an enamel bangle that is surprisingly tough; she has worn it a fair bit in the last five years, and it's totally chip free. Having said that, all you need is a ding at the right angle and with the right force, and chip!

My collection came about over a period of nearly 15 years, and some pieces I could not afford (or find!) today. There is plenty of time for you to collect more - starting from a new centre stone in your ER. One of the things I keep asking myself when considering a "new" (or old) piece is: will this be used/worn? If every time DW thinks about wearing a piece, she has to worry about fragility, it's probably not a good purchase. She can be quite hard on her pieces, but still has some enamelled ones. Not rings, but pendants, brooches and bangles.

Kris I so hear you on having so many dreams but not enough money.  I am constantly dreaming up new ideas for me.   I keep saying my husband needs to win the lottery.  I guess that means we need to play first LOL

I've tried on black diamonds and the are kind of cool.  My only issue with black diamonds is that 99% of them are treated.  I think I would rather onyx vs black diamonds since they pretty much look the same.  But the look... very very striking.  Particularly paired next to contrasting colors.

Thank you for the kind thoughts on my ring.  I am a stacking lover and having short fingers made me really want to make sure this design could allow for as many stackers as possible.  I love the look too and I have a feeling it won't go out of style anytime soon.

I love you idea of sapphire or topaz stacking bands.

I've run into the same issues as OMC mentioned with enamel though.  I used to get a lot straight from Japan and Korea.  Lovely pieces but hardly any ever stayed.  Even the cheap stuff I buy, I coat with clear lacquer (or nail polish if really cheap) to help protect.  I am not sure I would ever do it with a ring or bangles.  Bangles need to be super sturdy I think if you want them to be worn daily.
