Hi everyone!  I'm another newbie!  I'm from New York.     I'm obsessed with all things sparklie.  Some of you may already know me.  To the ones I already know hi again nice to see you all again Smiley  To the ones I'm meeting for the first time, nice to meet you and I'm sure I will learn so much more than I already have.  I guess it goes without saying that I LOVE diamonds!  Currently, I just purchased a double tier pear halo ring (haven't received it as of yet).  It has a peridot in the center.  HOWEVER, in the future I plan to replace it with a colored diamond.  My question is this, if it is under 1 carat would that make it less expensive?  I was told by my jeweler that once a diamond reaches a carat or better the price rises exponentially.  Thanks and once again a big howdy to all!

Hi MD.   I am not sure about the exponentially part.  They do go up once over a carat...David can tell you more about the colored diamonds.  As far as replacing a stone goes...I would just buy a whole new ring from David.  Trust me...by the time you pay someone to reset the thing (and lordy knows how it would look) you can just get a whole new one at what is much less than retail.   I have never seen colored diamonds at better prices (from someone that I trust.)  If David says it then it is true and by true, I mean the GIA would agree.  Plus this site is about getting two rings for the price of one...no one here is going to pressure you to consolidate!!!

Thanks GIA!  I will check that out!  Two rings for the price of one?  Definitely something I should look into.  I've browsed DBL before.  What I saw was soooooo beautiful!   I would love to have at least one loose, colored diamond by DBL, that's why I asked about having one set into my ring.  I would probably need to wait until I receive it and have my jeweler measure the pear center.   I would definitely love to buy a whole, new ring.  You are right.   It's best to have one specifically made for me.  I may have to wait awhile though.

Wait ...that sounded pushy and we are enablers...not pushers.

Take you time like I did.  I am one to talk...I switch stones around and it is kind of fun to stalk out one that is the perfect size for a setting you already have.  It is hard to match up pears in size unless you have access to a bunch of them.
There is no pressure on this site to buy one from David at all.  However, this is what I have found from my travels...it is not that most local jewelers want to be dishonest about their colored diamonds...its that I think they don't deal in them enough to either A. have full knowledge of them OR B. deal in the volume that David does...your two rings for the price of one will be if you get a good deal on one vs your full retail...or you buy a Y-Z colored diamond and you pay the price of a FIY!  Whatever you get or whenever you get it you just have to promise to show it...

Hey and welcome!!!!  I'd love to see the Peridot!!!

Generally diamonds over a carat are more expensive, but it depends on the cut, color and clarity of the diamond.. Since you want a yellow, say, if the yellow is a FANCY INTENSE .80 vs. a UV 1.02, the UV will probably be cheaper.. depends!

Thanks for the welcome everybody!  I knew this would be the place to come to for my diamond dreams!  I like to get the best pieces for the best prices as most people probably do.  I do think most B & M jewelry stores over - inflate their prices, especially with diamonds.  I paid next to nothing for the diamond pear halo ring.  So far everything I've bought online was beautiful.  Right now, until I start working again (or even after) I want my jewelry to look like I spent a lot when I really didn't  heart2 Besides, I only want the real deal!

Hello and welcome!

So envious that you live in NYC and can just take a stroll throught the diamond district! I have to endure a 6 hour flight to be able to do that (after an hour and 20 minutes, DH will start the incessant "are we nearly there yet?" too!)

Nice to see you here, looking forward to seeing your peridot!

Very pretty pendant! Question on the ring, what color are the prongs? From experience, and from looking at the settings here...lighter yellow stones 'sing' more with yellow prongs, and can look a tad washed out with white ones....your ST or UV will appear a bit more yellow with yellow gold prongs, giving you a more luxe look for your buck.

Welcome!  Cool pendant.  Reminds me of the one DJ had redone recently.  Cannot wait to see your ring.

As for the size of the center to use when you get a diamond, I think that will be dictated by the setting, since you already have it, no?  The new center will have to fit in.

Thank you all so much for the warm welcome!  Oh, yes I am all about getting the most for less.  I know you have to be careful because sometimes if you want quality you do have to spend the extra.  You know something, Jen?  I have yet to visit The Diamond District LOL, I should though.  But I heard the real dealing goes on in the high buildings, not really at the vendors.  Like you could get up there if a jeweler brings you up there.    I may try it though one day, but I have to try not to buy anything LOL that might be hard for me, especially if all I heard is wrong and I most certainly can get a good deal from one of the street vendors.  EMJ, I haven't received the ring as of yet although I was told it's packed up and ready to go, can't wait!  The whole ring, including the prongs is white gold.  Would that mean yellow may not work and I should go with blue or pink?

Thanks Ronda!  I really adore the pendant.  Actually I added the diamond circle because DH bought it for me so I figured I could wear both!  I've seen pictures of circles within circles so I thought, "Why not?"  I get to wear both this way LOL.  Besides, DH said he would buy it for me Grin  So far, I don't have the ring yet, but hopefully it will be here this week!  I would like a nice diamond for the center.

Thanks, Grace!  I figured I can wait until I receive the ring then have my jeweler measure it.  That way I will know how large a center I will need.  Last I heard, my ring is packed up and ready to go, so hopefully I will have it this week, I so can't wait!  The ring already has a peridot center, but that can be easily changed once I get the dimensions.  What I saw from the pics, I can probably wear it as is for a while until I find the perfect center.  Also, it's missing a tiny diamond from the side, easily replaced I hope.

Welcome MissDymonds666 !
There has been a lot of good points brought up here.
Let's start with the price of diamonds, going up exponentially as it goes past 1 carat.
Exponential actually is a very good word, because the price it does get get higher as you cross certain carat barriers, and then you have to pay for that much more diamond.
Let's say three quarter carat size diamonds are $3000 per carat.  If we multiply $3000 x 0.75 (three quarters of the carat), we get a net cost of $2250 of the three quarter carat diamond.
If we are looking at a diamond of the same color clarity and cut quality as the three quarter carat diamond, which was $3000 per carat.  The one carat diamond would likely be about $4000-$4500 per carat-and you've got to buy the whole one carat at that point to.
That means a comparable 1.00 to the .75ct would be $2250 versus approximately $4000.
Sounds pretty exponential to make.

Your take on the New York diamond District is correct too.  What we offer is exactly what you mentioned.
People don't have to find the upstairs office through a third-party.
They find us online, and we are their upstairs office.

There was also some talk of modifying rings and GIAgirl was correct.  It's much more difficult to try to change a ring, as compared to just making it from scratch the right way.
In some cases it is easy to set a new diamond into a ring that had a stone of similar size.  It's a case-by-case thing.

I also agree that it's important to look for good value when you buy.  As strange as this might sound.  I never try to buy our diamonds at the cheapest possible price.  There's a lot of reasons for this, for one I want to see the best diamonds.  Every time I look.  I'm not saying that I will pay 20% more than the next fellow but in many cases.  I don't mind paying 3 or 4% more than another dealer who is trying to get the cutter to sell for less.  I know that over time, the cutters want to show me their Best diamonds
The net result is that we get to see the best diamonds before the guys were trying to buy it for a few percent less.
When it comes to what we need to pay for setters, polishers, and the people who make our rings, at that point is absolutely no way to negotiate for a better price.
I would far prefer paying $50, as opposed to five dollars to set one of our fancy colored diamonds-if the setter is worth $50.
Thankfully, we've found setters that are worth that much.
Welcome to the forum have a great time!!

Thanks you so much, DBL!!  I just read the whole post.  So, basically what if one were to buy just under the carat weight they want so to speak.   Like just under a carat or let's say you want 1.50 so you buy just under 1.50 that would make the price considerably less right?  Actually, figuring in the diamond's properties, cut, color, clarity, of course.    Oh wait, you did answer that question in your first paragraph!  Here is a pic of the ring I purchased, it is the actual ring in the seller's possession, not in my possession just yet, I also did shop for value too.  I almost bought a pear halo ring that was way more expensive, but yet looking at this one I actually liked this one better.  It just so happened to be a lot less in price.  But for what I was going to, which was buy the setting, then a center diamond or gemstone, I just bought the whole ring instead.  I was having one heck of a time trying to find a gemstone that would fit an 11 X 8 center on the more expensive semi mount:

Funny, there's never any simple answers in this thing.
I suppose I should mention that attempting to buy diamonds right below a size barrier, to try and save money, is generally not possible.
The reason?
Well, it's very simple for a cutter to save a few points.
For this reason, 1.00 carat diamonds are far more common than .99 carat diamonds.

Once we get into more valuable diamonds, such as carat and a half and larger, stones that butt up against the next larger barrier are generally priced very close to those of the larger carat size.

For example, a 2.95 carat diamond is not worth all that much less than the 3.00 carat diamond of the same cut color clarity.
The list that dealers use to ascertain that the value of particular gradients is calibrated between 2.00 to 2.99 carat.
When a cutter cuts a 2.99 carat diamond, he's just not going to base his sale on the two carat list.

Thank you, DBL.  That cleared it up for me.  I just wanted to make sure of what I heard (which was not correct) that's why I asked.   I figured there is a lot more factored in as you mentioned.  When I receive my ring, I will have it measured, then take it from there.  I want something that will sparkle!  I was considering one of your gemstones too.  OMG they were gorgeous!
