OMG! I have spray painted my earrings and can't get it off!
« on: September 29, 2013, 03:32:25 PM »
Well, let's say a variety of soaps and water and my sonic cleaner aren't enough.  They were hit with pretty severe blow-back, but nothing straight on.

Settings are 18k yellow gold, with DBL diamonds (of course).  What would be safe for them?  Acetone?  Mineral spirits?  Plain turps?  Denture cleaners?

What type of spray paint was it? You may need some nitro thinner or acetone if the paint is nitrocellulose-based (e.g. car lacquers, Hammerite). Otherwise white spirit/turps followed by good old soap and water may work.

The good thing with gold and diamonds is that you can dunk them in pretty much anything (at room temp) other than aqua regia and they will survive unscathed, so you can try pretty much anything without fear of ruining the pieces, if you aren't sure what the paint is.

(For a moment I thought you had glued the earring to the ear with the paint - that would have been fun... not)

I got paint on my earrings and just soaked them in alcohol and then ran them through the ultrasonic with a hint of alcohol in it.   Good luck though!

The paint was all Rustoleum brand gloss enamel and contains Xylene and Aceto ne, OMC.

Since it contains acetone, I'll try that first.

Thanks for the suggestions, and the reassurances that they'll survive.  I truly appreciate the input.  Wish me luck....

Crisis contained.  It took two acetone baths and brushing with a little soft GUM pick.  And then the sonic cleaner, a hot water bath, and an alcohol dip.

Clean and sparkly again.  I feel much better, now.  ;D

I'd be taking an alcohol dip myself if that happened to my DBL beauties...   Good job! ;)

Those gum brushes are wonderful aren't they?  Glad that the earrings are all clean now!!

Lovecolor I actually do an alcohol dip most times when I clean jewelry.  Dries faster than water so less likely for junk to get stuck on the underside while drying.

I didn't know, but apparently "to dip" and "dipsomania" have nothing to do with each other in an etymological sense:

to dip: Middle English dippen, from Old English dyppan; akin to Old High German tupfen to wash, Lithuanian dubus deep

dipsomania: New Latin, from Greek dipsa thirst + Late Latin mania

However,  "to dip" in an alcoholic solution...is to clean as "dipsomania" (An insatiable craving for alcoholic beverages...www.thefreedictionary.com/dipsomania‎)...is to wash away.

Hence, they have a lot to do with each other in a "SAT" sort of way!   ;D

Oh please!  No SAT jokes!  We are trying to make DSS comprehend the importance of doing well on them with regard to future choices.  Talk about trying to teach a pig to whistle!  (see Robert Heinlein, Lazarus Long stories)   :BangHead:

But surely it was RH himself who pointed out that neither party would enjoy it...  >:D

I have not tried this yet- but it has been suggested that soaking in baby oil- then using a soapy solution will get rid of "gunk" on the bottom of the ring.

Maybe this will work with paint??

True that.  One frustrates oneself and pisses off the pig.  Nevertheless, parenting does seem to include those tasks one must attempt in the best interests of pig, regardless of the efficacy of the attempt.

Just tell him that you will enrol him in Space Infantry if he doesn't learn to whistle properly... (and change his name to Rico by deed poll, which may well prove to be the bigger deterrent!)

Just an aside...  I haven't needed to try your suggestion on diamonds:
I have not tried this yet- but it has been suggested that soaking in baby oil- then using a soapy solution will get rid of "gunk" on the bottom of the ring.

However, I did use baby-oil on my safety glasses which were also horribly  hit by the blow-back.  My hands are in such rough shape, only finger rubbing was necessary.  A little soap and water after, and presto!  Clean glasses!

Thanks, D.   Worked like a charm on plastic, which is much more porous than diamonds.
