Since we're on a roll here: I saw this at the Smithsonian and I couldn't take my eyes off it because, although the turquiose is exquisite, something just seemed off when I was looking at the piece (beautiful as it is). Sure enough, I learned that the original emeralds were removed by VCA during the mid-1900's and sold individually (thank YOU, VCA  ::) ). Then, VCA replaced the missing emeralds with the Persian turquoise. Ahhh well. This silver and diamond and emerald-now-turquoise tiara was a gift from Napoleon to wife No. II, Marie Louise. Gorgeous piece.

GIAGirl, can I come for beer with you? We may need to setp-up to a wine bar...

It's not a tiara clip, but it IS a clip by Cartier, circa 1925, with a carved jade (which may have been cut off an older Chinese carved jade piece - I need to look at it more carefully), lapis and diamonds.

It belonged to a Mrs. Morse, Chicago, who decided to have her name engraved on it (fortunately not in a visible position), and at some point the original clip fitting was replaced with a pin - but it will be restored back once I get confirmation from Cartier of the shape and material employed.

Isn't that what everyone wears to drink beer?

I don't really know the stats on the tiara.  I will ask my mom.  She provided the stones and her good friend made it as a wedding present for the wedding that did not take place.  My idea was to put two other sides to a pearl clasp on either end so it would sort of make an insert that you would wear on pearls and then take off when you wanted to wear the pearls by themselves.

To be honest, there is some pain associated with it, so it sits in the bank.  It makes me a little sad.  Can you imagine, diamonds making me sad?  MFP will be over in a while to wash my mouth out with soap.

Awww, GIA Girl, I am sorry about the wedding that did not take place.  :-[  However, it really is better than what may have happened...

Many moons ago, my best girlfriend married the wrong guy for her, and about two years into the marriage, they divorced. We never talk about him, the wedding, or the marriage (BTW, she remarried later). However, on the rare occasion we need to mention the first marriage, it is always regrettably referred to as "The Event That Never Happened."

So, chin-up, GIA Girl. Wear your tiara with joy because you've been spared THAT distinctive event. Remember, your precious tiara was made out of love for YOU and you alone. Associate it with its creators and givers-to-you, not The Event That Never Happened.

Now, go get your precious sparkly out of the bank and start thinking of ways to reinvent your lovely gift. I'm going to call Miss Fancy Pants now... :-*

Exciting project, OMC. I'm thinking Mrs. OMC already may have a pair of earrings that match quite well...?

I am sorry GIA that a tiara could bring you sad memories. it was sweet of your relatives to make it for you though. :Flowers2:

i rather like that title- "the even that never happened" for a 2 year marriage. I'll bet there are a lot of those out there.
