How does one "Make a ring by accident"?
« on: September 05, 2007, 01:05:34 PM »
Hi Everyone,
Believe it or not, I'm not all that "easy going"...OK, maybe that's obvious, but for the folks that work here, it might be painfully clear.
See, I am kind of a maniac.
Any of you that think you're obsessed with diamonds probably couldn't hold a candle to my craziness....
Plus, after we buy all these diamonds, it makes me want to design, and manufacture rings for them....

Sometimes it's a custom made ring.....in these cases I simply pick the main diamonds, and the factory pretty much does the rest.

In the case of "castings" we pick out bunches of them from the manufacturer, then bring them up to the office and see what diamond works where.
Sometimes we decide not to make a ring, and back it goes.
The ones we keep need the smaller round diamonds.
I have given up picking the smaller "micro-set" stones- leaving that meticulous job to the cutters we buy them from.

Somehow, I picked this very large ring- and somehow I decided that the 1.67K/VVS cushion might fit.
In fact, I was really not committed, but the guys in the office did not know that.

They DID know I'm always wanting things done quickly- so off the ring went to have it's melee picked, and lo and behold- out setter gave it an ultra quick turnaround.
I get the envelope open it up and go........HUH??????

It's not mainstream and I don't think I'd like it with a different diamond. There's just something about it that works. I think chunky jewelry is pretty popular these days.

As for the story, I am smiling (knowingly). I can picture the scenario.

I have just had a look.  My first thought is that it is very unusual.  My second thought is that I have never seen a ring like it ........... you know that ring starts to grow on you- big chunky grow on you.  I am almost saying I really like it.

I think it would be brilliant with a colored gemstone rather than a white diamond.  Imagine it with a ruby - regal and antique looking.  I bet that would be gorgeous actually!  *DJ hunkers down and awaits her pink slip*   :D

Still, I dunno... I think I'd have to see Casper and Company on a finger before I passed my FINAL judgment.  I like the side view, but when I see Casper head-on, I just want to stick something in one of the corner spaces and pry our fellow free.  Perhaps, I'm perceiving more space than is actually there? :dontknow:

I thought for sure the video would change my mind.   No... it didn't.    However,  I can see removing the top and the bottom portions of the basket where the center diamond sets.   I think that would truly give the diamond the attention it deserves!   The diamond is just phenominal.

I have to agree with DJ... I see a colored gemstone in this setting.   It certainly would give it the  look  of a vintage/estate piece.    :My2cents:

ETA:  All that said,   I can see where someone wouldn't consider that ring a "mistake " at all.   I am sure that someone will be happy to give this piece a lovely home!

I still like it. And I keep coming back specifically to look at it. It has a sort of "draw". I think it would be stunning with a gemstone, too. But I like it with that cushion. I think a light brown would be great as would any yellow. Again, I don't think we need a whole slew of this setting but I'm saving it for the gallery. (unless D tells me otherwise).

Pinky shot? I need to see it on a finger. Although David's pinky is the size of most football player's thumbs.

I don't have to await my pink slip this time since I like it. However, I might get a demerit for saying I snickered as I pictured the scenario that inspired the goof.

I am sorry, I know you all think I am crazy, but I like it even more after seeing the video.  I think it is very cool and unique.  I would definitely consider it if it looked good on me.

I have to admit, if it had a deep colored center, I would be inclined to buy it!  The diamond isn't doing it for me but a deep red ruby (honestly, I am not ruby obsessed - it would just look incredible) would be absolutely astonishing in that setting.  I love the vintage/antique feel that it has.

I think it's the contrast that works for me. I like that it's yellow gold with the white melee and white center. I'm not usually a fan of dome type rings. But the shape of the center and the ring are sort of a nice complement.

You see, what WM seems to like about the ring, is what, I think, makes me uneasy with the piece.  Although it is a cushion, I see the diamond as a more modern looking stone (due to the faceting style). And, this modern type diamond is set into a very ornate, traditional type setting.  I just can't wrap my head around the incongruous nature of the two.  (Plus, I STILL want to stick something next to Casper and pry him out of there.   :director: "Don't worry, Casper... someone will set you free!!!!!!!!!").

Interesting discussion.. kind of like looking at a Rhorschach inkblot test, everyone has his/her own vision and interpretation!
