HI Everyone!
Today Trinkette was in and we went gem shopping.
IN mind: to make some new gemstone rings.
For example, this is a lovely Star Sapphire..

It's always got that beautiful star- and a lovely purple shading.
Hit it with the light- whammo!
Really coool effect...

Trinkette suggested a ring with small diamonds all around the center.... a ring like that would be in the $2700 neighborhood....

Hi, David!

I realize this is not related to this thread, but the sapphire here jogged my memory.  I have wondered if, as sometimes you have had done with diamonds, a sapphire can be re-cut or re-faceted or otherwise repaired of signs of wear?  Here's a ring I've had for over ten years as a RHR worn everyday.  What is harder to see in the pics is that the exposed edge of the oval along the top has a chip right where the facets meet at the edge of the stone.  The ring has been polished by the jeweler a bajillion times (I'm a little obsessive about it...ha ha)  These close-up pics sure made me realize the wear on the metal!  Is it possible to do this or not worth the expense or the possibility that it could damage the stone further?  THANKS!!!!!!

I think you can polish out scratches. I've had it done before. I lost just a touch of carat weight. But David is, of course, the expert on this. That is just my personal experience.

That oval is lovely. David made one for my mom with the oval sapphire and oval diamond side stones. She gets compliments all the time.

Hi Shamrock,
A sapphire can be repolished, but if the chip is small enough that it does not bother you it might not be worth the effort.
Since you've re-polished the ring so many times, make sure to ask the jeweler to check the security of the prongs.

Thank you, David & WM for the advice!  I have thought about maybe putting the sapphire in a bezel-set ring (perhaps a halo).  That might obviate the need for repair of the chip along the top edge.  I do wonder if such a setting might cause less light/color to refract from the stone & make it look darker.  You guys have been a great help.  By the by, I think the FDGBY Asscher in that semi-mount is spot on....

It will be    th_AWA123112

I am swooning over it already..... love7

Love that pink sapphire, David!  What are the stats, and how do you plan to set it?

David, you have selected some very nice sapphires.  That blue pear is wonderful, and I really want that pink cushion for a pendant.
That pink asscher is going to be a knockout

Thank you guys!!

In person the purple is quite dramatic

We're thinking of setting it in a solitaire- all pink gold....what do you guys think?

In the photos, there's a small cloud visible.
This is known as "Color Banding".
It's not possible to see this easily- if at all- in person. I can't see it

The pink Asscher does have a unique cut.,
There's an extra facet which can be seen in the photos.
Below you can see it around 10:00

I don't feel it's a detraction- in real life, as you move the stone it actually adds a bit of glitter

I swear I think I'm in heaven. Each and every one is so different, so stunning. I can't even say what I love the most. I'm drowning in eye candy. I love blue and pink and purple sapphires. I cannot wait to see them all set. I just can't wait.

I think the pear has to go in some kind of microsetting. Wow. Just wow. A pink sapphire in an asscher cut? How many of those have you ever seen? And in such a delicious color.
