I saw a GIA report that stated the stone had a bearded girdle???  I goggled it, but is this a bad thing, does it effect the integrity of the stone? Thanks

Hi Diamondluvr!  David is out of the office for the weekend but I will make sure he sees your question.

Hey guys!
It's a case by case basis as far as how detrimental it might be.
What the term refers to is when the girdle is a little sloppy, and spills over onto the adjacent facets.
In minor cases, it's nothing to worry about.
In bad cases it could indicate a problem

Thanks for the explaination David!  It seems that this, as with many things related to  diamonds depends on the stone.   Smiley

I had to laugh at goggle instead of google. The other day my husband was complaining that his computer would not go to google. When I checked what he was doing, I saw he had typed goggle.com.

I have a question about  girdles  for David if he doesnīt mind.  I have a French platinum clasp on a 1930īs pearl necklace, it is beautifully made and has some very small but  white sparkly diamonds but when I louped them I noticed that the girdles on nearly all of them are a bit  roughly finished. Would they be described as bearded?   Does that mean that someone way back was economising?  I am posting a photo but it is just to give a general idea of the clasp which comes apart and you can wear one string, two or three.

Hi Joia,
The clasp looks very pretty.

Older diamonds commonly have a "softer" girdle than modern ones - which are well defined. That in and of itself does not mean anything is wrong- or "economized."

Thanks for your answer.  I thought my lovely clasp had something wrong with it.  As the pearls are supposed to be natural opposed to cultured (not tested though) it seemed strange to economize on the diamonds.  Thanks for your compliments everyone.  It looks nice with however many rows, when it is worn with one row of pearls the clasp becomes a pendant.

What a gorgeous set of "poils"!   I wonder if they used old mine cut diamonds in the clasp?   ~Ronda

I must one day Robin.  I know that the clasp is art deco French.  I am actually not in that much of a hurry - at the moment I believe they are natural....  see what I mean?
