david Would the same be true for marquise diamonds? I've seen some with BAD bow ties, and often wondered if they got the "bow tie" for the same reasons some pears do....

Absolutely Snoop!
In fact, Marquiises are even tougher to get just right- and may be more prone to an un-attractive bow-tie.

Here's what i consider to be a really nice one

If you added more facets to the back of the bowtied pear, would it make it look better, or worse?

Well, it looks pretty amazing now, so I'd say the cutter know exactly what to do witht hte rough that made this. It's not the number of facets

I think my favorite pear was your 'cotton candy' pink pear necklace, that was TDF---long and lean, there is just something about that shape that I love!!!

That marquise is my ideal shape for that shape.  Not too thin, not to pudgy.  Same with pears, I just like them to look like a semi chubby tear drop, not too thin.  I am experiencing the Goldylocks syndrome in diamonds...

I really don't mind a small bow tie, it adds character.

THIS is a brilliant thread - those pics with the lines showing why some stones have bowties are sheer genius.  Love it!

I'm with Snooper, I kind of like a bowtie in some stones.  It can really add to the character of the stone.  Of course, each diamond should be judged on its own merits and what you find pleasing to YOUR eye.

Thanks all!!

Here's a stone I fell in love with.
It's a "Sam Spade Special"
In this case he found a very high color Si2 - with a beautiful Make and Model

We're calling it E/SI2...if it was larger, or more expensive, we'd go for a GIA report

In terms of clarity: it's got a few small carbon spots inside- you can actually see them in some of these super close up photos. That's why I called it SI2. But these tiny pinpoints take nothing away from the overall brilliance. In some of the shots they are invisible.....

ITEM #: R2242
Pear Shape Diamond, Loose

  WEIGHT: 0.72ct
  SHAPE: Pear Shape
  COLOR: E
  CLARITY: SI2
  MEASUREMENTS: 7.80 x 5.00 x 3.10 mm
  TOTAL DEPTH: 62.0%
  FLUORESCENCE: MEDIUM BLUE

Price: $2449

In terms of "bow-tie": The photos show the larger facets I was talking about- so in some senses, it might look a bit like a "bow tie"
Yet there's no detraction for me visually. Because this particular type of bow tie is totally non obtrusive. In fact, it's an essential part of the cut- and it's intrinsic beauty.
DJ and Snoop pick up on this naturally.

It's only when this trait is very exaggerated that it becomes a drawback visually ( for me)

Thank you guys!

Part of the reason I got all these pear shapes is that we had a request by somene.
We're going to be making a double pear bypass ring. 1.16carats total weight. Fancy Intense Yellow VS.
The ring will feature the two intense yellow pears.......

An intense yellow pear? Gulp. That would be what I want. Don't show them. Absolutely not.

Well, where are they?

I love pears...I think if you look hard enough you can find a bowtie in all of them.  It is super hard not to find a little difference in that area.  Those are all nice.

That's gorgeous. I have no need of another pear, but I want that one. It's gorgeous. Not sure what I'd do with it, but I want it. Want it. Want it. etc...

It's the classic pear. Perfect. I love it.
