Hi Everyone!
Here's a parcel of (mostly) very pretty, carat and a half round diamonds- most even have H&A patterns.

Why are they badly cut?

It's a great question- and central to many debates about what constitutes the best cut.
Let's look at them from behind- I love to look at them like this.

Based on the amount of stones here, it may be obvious, we're looking at these parcels at a major league cutter.
They have sorted these stones into the "commercial" cut grade. They are J-K-L Si stones, therefore, have not been to GIA.

So what's wrong with them?

T!!!  (I don't care if they are badly cut...put them all together and make a kickarse tennis bracelet. Even better...set them bottom side up for a tennis bracelet. Not for everyday use but hey...that would be cool looking).

They sort of look like the tables are too small.

As long as the price reflects the quality of the stones and a person is informed of the quality they are buying and understands the difference I don't view it as a problem.  I have purchased "H&A" stones for use in rings because I like to see the pattern and enjoy the precision of the cut.  However, if I was making something like a DBTY necklace, a bracelet, or earrings I would be less concerned about precision cut and more interested in getting bigger stones for my project.

One thing though, I really don't like the whole fisheye thing, I feel like I can see that in some of these stones and that is a no-no for me.  I don't need perfect but fisheye is a deal breaker!

Great eye Sanchica!

In fact, let's show everyone what a fisheye looks like.

I'm with Sanchica on this one- I can't tolerate that look in stones.

But that was actually the only one with that particular deficit.

The others will really look pretty in a tennis bracelet. Man, that would be alike  King Kong tennis bracelet!

So what's "wrong" with them?

I suppose the "quotes" should not be there- there is a compromise made in the cut of these stones. it just might not result in what one would expect.

Like, the stone right about the "dunkin' donut"- that's a nice looking diamond!

Nobody want to guess what's wrong with them?

BTW, Sanchica, I see a few others in the photo that seem to have "donut" affliction.
I don't know why, but the first time I saw a fisheye, I thought of a donut.
Fish-eyes are dramatic on a single cut, which were the foundation of training for grading at Harry Winston

Could be because I used to get very hungry working at Winston.
There was a donut shop next door.....

But, back to the picture...I think what's happening is that the ones on the sides get a different perspective to the lens- so you end up looking through the crown instead of the table......but I'll get that parcel over here and we'll check it out tomorrow.

Ok, I'l spill the beans-.
These stones are cut too deep- which is a way to maximize yield from the rough.
I'll have to get a better profile shot than this one- but the point is- the girdles on the stones are WAY thick.
Looks like some bulge on top as well- I'll need to check them out again tomorrow....

Confused, DJM? Have you STILL not taken your nap yet?  Roll Eyes Thanks for trying to get my attention earlier, BTW. I'm bummed the RB party began without me. Shoot, I didn't even get here in time to guess what is wrong with the parcel. I was thinking, when I scrolled down to the upside-down photo, that they all appear quite deep. However, that's as far as I got.

I just love RBs. So far, though, these aren't killing me. Are there some goodies in there? So hard to tell when they are photographed in the box... I do think we need to see more.  Evil

Some of these stones look a little yellow in the pics.  Are there some lower (than J-K-L) colors in this group?

So I call the cutter to have the parcel sent over- I specifically asked for the one from yesterday, but it's a different one.
19 =23.30cts. An average of 1.22cts- making this a very desirable size.
Matching stones would be 2.50ct tw studs, for example. As you can see, they are SI- and maybe a bit worse.
I can see a huge carbon booger in a few of them....
In terms of "make" the average here is much better. But I still found a great example of bad cut to show you guys.

Believe it or not, the stones are a 1.20 carat, and a 1.21carat!
the 1.20 measures
6.45 x 4.23 which equates to a 65.6% depth ratio

The 1.21 measures
6.92 x 4.12 which equates to a 59.5% depth ratio

Here's where all that weight is hidden- a massive girdle

One of the first jewelry stores I went to look at was a 'discount' jeweler in a outlet mall.  They had several 90-110 point RBs that really didn't look much larger than my friend's 3/4ct ring.  Upon closer inspection, one could have practically written an inscription on their girdle.  Yuck!

wow those thick girdles are no joke!  that was my problem before my husband and I knew anything about diamonds and we got a really bad one for my first er...thankfully once we learned better we both had a distaste for the ring I had and we decided to get a new one, then I found DBL and I was a lucky girl!

Massive, and very irregular too - notice how it widens on the left.
