Hi!  I'm new.  My father's wife passed and left him a huge diamond that she didn't want him to pass on like the rest of the jewelry she left.  She wanted him to sell it to help take care of himself.  It's a 5.70 ct, round, SI2, L in color.  What kind of value (not appraisal) do you experts think we should expect.  I have a jeweler suggesting to send it off to NY for an offer??  I'm not worried about the jeweler but I'm worried about his estimate.  Send me your thoughts and I'll tell you what his estimate was.

HI cjfromkc!
Welcome to the forum.  Sorry to hear of your loss.

This estimate you were given... this person says, you could get that much money for the Diamond?

The difficulty in assessing somethings value like this, even if we knew that it was a perfectly cut L/Si2 with a GIA report (which at this point we don't know, does it have a GIA report?).
Anyway, the difficulty in trying to assess this, is who's buying it?  And who were they buying it from?

There are stones that we sell for $10,000, which go for $15,000 for in other venues.
Yet we need to pay less than $10k to stay in business.

Consumers selling diamonds to dealers are not even going to get what dealers pay each other.....

Anyway the point is, how much it's worth really depends on whose buying, and who's selling

I do understand what you're saying.  It does make sense.  Explaining that to my father may make him change his mind as that was her favorite of all.   I appreciate your time and all of your thoughts.  I'm so glad I found this site.  I'll be back soon I'm sure.
