You guys are right, of course!

The only reason it's a disappointment is because I can't really afford to keep it, so since I'll have to sell it, the pure pink would have given more value, that's all... Now to talk David into selling it for me on consignment or something...  Grin

I've got my eye on a couple of the rounds on the rock diamond site, but I've got a little bit of time to figure that out.. probably won't propose until july, maybe august or sept.

I don't think you'll have any trouble selling such a beautiful stone!

Let us know what you pick for an engagement ring - so exciting! Good luck with your search and proposal.

Wise move Newhope--going with DBL that is. One thing I've learned in my own marriage is that women change their taste in jewelry over time. Back when we first got engaged DW loved marquis -- now, she doesn't. At one point she only wore yellow gold--now she wears white gold or platinum (no yellow gold).

I guess what I'm saying is that you can always take advantage of the DBL trade-up policy when she changes her mind and LOVES pinks in a few years--hehhe.

Oh, and BTW here's some advice for you: Don't try to figure it out because you NEVER will--always have a PLAN B my friend. Good Luck.

ETA: Do you want me to send you info on ADS University? We do offer open enrollment and rolling admissions. Evil

DJM, PLEASE, don't go about warping another perfectly decent guy with your "University." Geesh, nothing but trouble.  And besides, DJM, SOME men have NATURAL abilities.  They don't have to go to some lame "institution" to be taught by some old fuddy-duddy who seems to be OVER-compensating by constantly bragging about "teaching" others.  Roll Eyes

Newhope, I don't know your gal's taste, but, if you go "classic" you can't go wrong. Or, she might prefer something classic, with a weenie bit of a twist... something a bit unusual that makes the ring uniquely hers.  Enjoy the time you have to look around.  If you want suggestions, there's a whole pile of us here who would  just LOVE to bust in on your project!

Oh, and, in my opinion, it doesn't take a TON of money to make a beautiful ring.  I wear two diamond and platinum three-stone rings everyday... both are beautiful. My ER came in a blue box. The other ring, David had made for me with cushion diamond R2121 (still listed on his site under SOLD). The size and cut of the center stones is different, and the sides are completely different, but, the craftmanship on BOTH pieces is exquisite. I might even say the DBL piece is BETTER than the other (the finished ring is somewhere here on the forum, under a thread titled something like Brown Round Project... sorry, I can't remember just now). And, I have seen that the DBL piece is far better than many of the settings on other rings in the Blue Box store. Anyway, as knock-out gorgeous as my bigger ER is, it is the other, smaller ring that David made (which is not "small" by any means), that most people stop and ask to see.  It happens all the time. It just proves that it doesn't take big bucks to make a gorgeous piece of jewelry. Look for exceptional cut, and maybe, a stone that faces up large for it's carat weight. David can help you find it.

Oh T, you miss guided soul. It has nothing to do with NATURAL abilities--we all recognize we have that. It's educating people about getting the MOST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK...similar to educating people to DBL--the "go to" place to get the MOST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK for colored diamonds.  Wink

ROFL!

I agree with Trinkette though - there's an X factor about DBL stuff. You get an extra something undefinable when you open the box and when you wear it. They are instantly recognisable and in a league of their own. Nice stuff - you can't go wrong!

Ummm, DJM, I don't know how to break this to you, but, most of us don't HAVE to PAY for it.  I know that I certainly don't. In fact, just so you know, that sort of transation is illegal in a lot of places...

Also, DJM, notice that Mrs. M said "X" factor, not "Y" factor.  Roll Eyes

I better not have to pay her off!

The way I see it, if I did have to pay her off, all she'd ever get from me was whatever it took for that, but since I don't (wont) She'll get everything I can afford to give her.

Let's face it, How many women do you know who would say something like "well, why don't you SELL that pink  pear2 diamond and buy me something less valuable"?

Yeah, she's a keeper  Grin

Newhope, she's actually quite brilliant.  It is precisely BECAUSE she says "sell the pink, buy me something cheap," that you are hooked... You're here today, already working to please her.  Evil

Ha! Yes, of course, but she's sincere!

We actually went ring shopping, and I had her try on all kinds of diamonds, from 3/4 carat to a whopping 3 carat princess. any time she tried on more than 1.25 or so carats, she got a lot less excited.

I think I might have to do something with sapphires as side stones, it's both our birth stone.

I'm thinking 1.25 carat round, with 1/4 carat sapphires set low so they're a little bit covered by the center stone, in 14k white... whadda you guys think?

Newhope, I think the size you've chosen for the round is a GREAT size.  Certainly, sapphires (blue?) as sides would be lovely.  However, I'm not sure about the partial coverage of the sides... do you mean MORE than a setter would do if he/she set the stones really close together (ie, set them really well). If that is the look you want, why not go with half-moons as sides?

Of course, you are reading a post from a woman who's FAVORITE ring combination is a three-stone in all round brilliants or ovals.  So, I'm biased.  I like them to stay low (because I'm a klutz) and spread across my finger as much as possible. So, I guess, I prioritize for horizontal bling. You seem to prefer vertical bling.  Grin

May I ask, is the high setting and partial coverage, her idea or your idea? In my view, if you're setting stones, why HIDE any?  Don't you want to see all their beauty?  I'm sorry, perhaps, I've missed your point though... do you have a photo or some sort of example?  Really, I love the fact that you're looking to do something a bit unusual...

I understand what you're saying Smiley

Rather than setting the center stone high, I'm thinking of setting the side stones extra low, for one thing, she doesn't want anything on the sides to overpower the center stone. in my mind the Sapphires set low might increase the "blue" of the diamond, not to make it look blue, but rather to make it "flash" blue, let me see if I can draw a picture of what I'm talking about for the setting... gimme a few minutes...

Haha, no I enjoy the banter!

I think if you have a well-cut diamond (and that is key here if you want to be sure to "flash" ANY colors) it will pick up blue from side stones. I'm not sure that setting the stones BELOW the diamond would make much difference, or if it did, whether you'd be happy with the overall setting.

Perhaps David can shed some light on how the RB would react to blue "nearby."

david Can you shed some light on this?

Part of the reason I'm thinking of getting it set like that is so that the ring is slightly narrower, as she has skinny fingers!

NH, you pear is gorgeous!  I would take it in a heartbeat, but everyone has there own preferences and your GF would be looking at it on a daily basis and needs to love her ER Smiley

Does she like her rings set low?

I only ask because, rings set alittle higher look better on my hand than super low ones.  One of my rings ended up being set low and I don't really love the look on my hand and therefore don't tend to wear it often.  Just something to think of when you are picking out her ER setting.
