HI everyone!
As we all know the cut of a diamond is one of the most important aspects to consider when buying a diamond.
Here's a unique stone that is a great specimen to use to discuss this.
Here's the stats:

ITEM #: R2861
Round Cornered Square Modified Brilliant Diamond, Loose

  WEIGHT: 1.01ct
SHAPE: Round Cornered Square Modified Brilliant
  COLOR: Fancy Yellow
  CLARITY: VS1
  MEASUREMENTS: 5.49 x 5.31 x 3.90 mm
  TOTAL DEPTH: 73.4%
  TABLE SIZE: 68%
  POLISH: G
  SYMMETRY: Fair
  FLUORESCENCE: NONE
  GIA REPORT #: 17480240

Here's the stone

Can you notice that the culet or apex of the stone is not in the center?

Does this mean it's badly cut?
My first reaction is to actually look at the diamond.
Actually in this case, I looked at the diamond before I looked at the GIA report.
The off center culet is not immediately apparent.
One thing I did notice was that the stone was on the deep side.
No detriment to the sparkle and overall appearance- except it's not the largest 1.00 you'll ever see.
By no means is it tiny, just not "spready"

Let's tilt the stone a little and look at it

To me, it's even less apparent now.

Here's a third shot- where the camera didn't quite grasp it's subject in perfect focus..

The last shot is, IMO, the closest to what the human eye will see. Whose eyes could focus in like the top two shots?

What do you guys think?

BTW- GIA did NOT call this a Cushion Modified Brilliant - as I would have expected. No sireebob.
Why it's a "Round Cornered Square Modified Brilliant"? I can't answer.
I mean I can- It has to do with the facet pattern- but I can't cause it seems silly to me....

For us less than erudite sparkly lovers, I've seen a whole lot worse cut colored stones that still commanded huge prices, simply because of their color.  scared

what about those sparklies that have visible natural boogers, like R2635?  That golden brown beauty is pretty NOM from many angles, and this 'little' fella looks pretty good, if not so rich as big brother, from some angles....

Would I buy it?  Probably not, but then, my heart is given to R1945. Flowers2   I do like really CLEAN stones, if they aren't BLOOOO!  hail hail

I like the facet pattern, the shape/proportion, and the color.  However, the asymmetry would bother me.  It would need to be a *wonderful* bargain, for me.

Great point Robin!

Many cutters or dealers would simply get a GIA "color only" report which does not mention symmetry.
I admire the cutter for providing the full one.
Yes, the stone is about $500 less than I'd expect to pay for a Fancy Yellow VS1.
The price would be $5270.
I'd say a really nice VS1 no FL Fancy Yellow could easily go for $6k.....

Is that enough of a difference?

Is it just me, or does the diamond seem a little lopsided as well?  Sort of like a parallelagram?  Is that just an optical illusion because of the culet?  I really really like this diamond, but it is probably more than I would want to spend on a deep 1 ct.  That bothers me more than the off center bit.

It's a very pretty stone, and I love the colour. It's a very nice yellow. David, if it bothers you and you don't want to worry about sending it to GL, please just pop it in the safe and I'll come and pick it up. See? You don't even have to pay for shipping to get rid of it.

Actually, I like it very much, it's a stone I would consider if (when) I was looking for a yellow.

I agree it does look lopsided.  I think that bothers me more than the center of the stone, not being in the center.  Sorry, $500 is not enough for me to consider it a good deal.

I remember that lopsided yellow em cut a few years back. I rather like it but I have to say I'm not sure. The color and shape are great. It's less noticeable than the lopsided em cut.

This isn't half as noticable as some I've seen on other sites.  They don't even mention that the cut might be a little off-center.  But when you have to tilt your head to minimize the problem (especially in princess cuts) ...well that's not even fair symmetry that just an ugly diamond. pirate

D-lovely color and sparkle, the cut would bother me though.

D= time for another apology from me.  Seems lately that almost every time I post, my revisions take out the wrong part.  My bad.  My apology.

What I wanted to say and cut, was that I don't think that in person this diamond woud look off-center when it had been set and that the color  and sparkle are terrific

Here is what I should have posted with the last entry of mine as a sample of a vendor not mentioning a cut was off-center.
