I found this interesting pic, it shows that the appearance of a diamond changes a lot from rough to cut. A stone, apparently very light, might show a very intense color if the diamond cutter was good.

Interesting to watch how the cutter made the most of the colour as the process goes on.

If you do a search, you'll see a few threads here where David has shown something similar with yellow rough. It's a fascinating process.
