Hi everybody!  Trading in polished diamonds, is much less speculative than buying rough diamonds to cut.
What this means, is that when a dealer buys a polished diamond, they pretty much know what they are getting.
Even if the stone does not have a GIA report, the ability to be able to grade a diamond is an essential skill for a diamond dealer.   As long as you're confident or grading abilities there is very little guessing.

For companies that buy rough, polish it and sell it, there is much more guessing, and speculation.
For that reason, it is possible for a cutter to make a huge profit on a single diamond-much larger than the seller of polished diamonds could expect.
But the flip side to this, is when cutter buys a piece of rough that he expects to polish out to be a valuable diamond and some small difference halves the value.
This is just such a diamond.
In the rough, we were convinced that it would polish to be a fancy intense yellow.  The color is very strong.  Although we polish thousands and thousands of carats a year, there's still no way this tell for sure, what a diamond will polish out in terms of color.
GIA graded this diamond Fancy Deep Brownish Yellow.  No question the color is quite unusual.




Although it's quite difficult to justifiably call a $60,000 diamond (our price) inexpensive, taken in the context of what this diamond would cost if it had been graded intense yellow (double to three times the price), it's easy to see how the cutter's taking a bath. 
If it was even lucky enough to get a grade of  "fancy yellow" from GIA it would be worth at least $90,000

Oh, I hate that the cutter didn't realize the profit he thought he would...

But ooooooohhhhhh, I loooove this diamond!

If I win the lotto, I'm having that 5 ct J/I1 pear set with baguette sides as an ER, and this set... let's see... in a split shank, perhaps, as a RHR.   Cheesy

(Of course, I never buy lotto tickets... but maybe just this once  Cheesy.)

Whatever it is, it is gorgeous! So interesting to me it got the same grade as my old FDBY.  This one seems to have much less brown than mine did.

It's not that the cutter is being greedy, he is not making any money at all on this diamond.
Another aspect of being a rough diamond buyer, which is so difficult, is that it takes gobs and gobs of cash.
You really can't buy them effectively one by one, which is how we buy polished diamonds-they must be purchased in large groups.
I really hope he makes profit.  That way he can buy more rough diamonds to polish, and sell to us .  Diamonds are getting harder and harder to find and this guy has been amazing for years.
In terms of using the rough for maximum artistic output, as well as a great price, he's one of the best diamond cutters I've ever seen

That is a gorgeous diamond!! Oh I wish I had $60k laying around!! I agree that it seems to be less brown compared to GL's former cushion that had the same color grade.

I LOVE the shape and color and SIZE!! WOWWWWWWWW!

Yes, it needs either a non-halo split shank like Leann Rhimes, or a very thin, all yellow pave shank like Heidi Klum's.  That would be incredible!

Okay, my new when-I-win-the-Lotto fantasy:

RHR-- this cushion with a platinum/white diamond split shank, yellow double claw prongs.

ER-- the 5 ct. pear with baguette (tapered??) sides, platinum.

Band-- asscher eternity band, such as the 3.66 David had at Christmas.

Would it be too much, do you think?   Grin Cool Grin

How about with those 4 ct. tw studs and a riviera necklace?  Would THAT be too much?  Plus a tennis bracelet?   Grin
