Man, do I have to do everything around here?

« on: July 27, 2010, 07:15:12 PM »

I came home from work tonight to find DD (age 17) watching an episode (rerun) of The Kardashians.  I sat down next to her to ask how her day went and she began answering me in those one word answers teenagers are so famous. Clearly she was more intersted in her "show" than talking with me.  (The nerve).  Roll Eyes   Anywho...I looked up to see what she was so enthralled with and realized it was the episode where Khloe gets engaged. My eyes popped out of my head when I saw the 9 ct center radiant /12ctw she was sporting. So, I got to wondering what the largest diamond you ever sold to a client D. I immediatley asked DD why she was watching this crap...and she just  Roll Eyes at me. ( I did manage to get a smile out of her though).

Good question T.  I always thought that RB's look like glass door knobs when they get too big.  (and you know I'm a big fan of RB's T). After seeing this radiant cut...I'd have to say no.

Good point OMC. I wonder what the carat weight of that bauble is....also... would it make a difference if it was a diamond instead of a gemstone?

It's about 17 carats of tourmaline. I think if it were a white diamond of the same approximate size (a 17 ct diamond would be smaller by about 10%) it would look even worse.

But why put it into a ring? And with a halo?  Roll Eyes

Yeah....as if 17carats isn't overkill by itself...and then to add a halo on top of it. LOL.

Yabut that is the most delicate looking halo there so it makes it classy!

Okay I do believe there is such a thing as too big.  It all depend on the hand size, the person and the location they are.

Personally a 2 ct RB looked stupidly large on my kid sized hands.  My DH is lucky I have small fingers Wink

I DO think that some gem rings can be too big (yup, OMC, I agree – the diamond doorknobs don't do it for me either, and you know that I adore RBs); however, I am quite smitten with this red honker. OK, I am a little shy to admit that I actually LOVE the tourmaline (rubellite?) just as it is.  dontknow Although, I can see it as a centerpiece to some of the tiaras we've seen in the tiara thread.

I tried on a 32 carat yellow diamond and I would have to say that it was a little too big for me and my everyday life.  It sort of looked like a mini hamburger bun on my hand.....but I would have taken it, if it was offered...hehehee.

Yes, it's a rubellite. Just a little too pink to be perfect, but a nice cut. In a tiara, in a bracelet/bangle, in a necklace it would work so much better. And one could add some more stuff too... (I'm of the "more is more" persuasion too, at times)

I could totally see it in a bangle and I think it would look stunning in one!

I think that huge ring is a bit much, I wouldn't want to wear anything that was actually wider than my finger or that came so close to my knuckle!

I dunno, I can see a big ring (rubellite, hamburger bun... take your choice) with a plain black or charcoal dress or gown, a pair of discreetly sized matching diamond dangly earrings and nothing else (ok, a pair of pumps would be fine). Trés chic. Or, maybe wear the ginormous ring with a matching bead necklace, a bright yellow mini dress, and tall boots. Very mod.

The ring is cool. Perhaps not for "everyday." But a wicked statement piece nonetheless.

GIAGirl, I wish I could have seen you wearing the hamburger bun.  Wink

erm....it would make a nice brooch.  Wink  Gorgeous emerald.

I'm reminded of my friend Phong's philosophy on jewels - 'It's only too big if it's on someone else's finger.'  I wouldn't turn any of these rings down were they given to me.

and I'd wear them quite happily - in the nude - because I certainly don't have anything in my wardrobe that could possibly match their importance.

Wow I couldn't even imagine wearing that ring.  When the skin disappears like that, it definitely is too much.

If I got that ring it'd be dismantled in a heartbeat.

I know it's harsh but it really isn't pretty to me (gasp... though the stones are fine)

i'm kinda with squiggly, i think those diamonds could be put to better use, like in a bracelet!  mmmm, pretty.  actually i think the whole thing could be made into a bracelet and it would look awesome.  and i'm also with ah2, i got nothing to match any of these, so nude it is!
