I've heard about that a long time ago.  We own a timeshare and that's been big for many for years now.  Not just the 0's password but they do have ways to over ride it.  So far I have not had anything stolen from the safe, but I have heard that.

I prefer to "hide" things in my room or take it all with me.  Like if I have my laptop, I prefer to put it in a locked case in a locked suitcase that you can discreetly lock to a pipe or table that doesn't move.  I do also travel with my POS electronics or carry them with me (cell phone) so if something does happen it's not a huge loss to me.

Nothing is 100% safe in a hotel, and people should always remember that.  I'd never leave important things in your room just in case.

Although I'm only taking the train in for the day, DF has cautioned me to only wear what is insured.  I don't usually jewelry on vacation with me (other than my ER and a favorite pendant and a watch), so I can't imagine not using the hotel's safe deposit.  I wonder how may people have been ripped of by using the room safety deposit box.
