OK, now that I've got your attention:

I think I have just bought R3114. I'm still not sure how. But I believe I have. Now, what does one do with a fancy deep orangy-yellow long legged well spread radiant below 0.75 ct?

How about this? Platinum ring, two baguettes about 5 mm x 1.5 and two half moons about 3.5 mm in diameter. Thin claws throughout (and possibly a couple of discrete, very thin metal bars under the stones to hold the half moons and baguettes in place without having four claws each on small stones.

The name of the thread, I hear someone muttering at the back? R is - well - R. 3.14 » p, and the other 1 is the first square number. So, R3114 = R pie square

Veeeery nice!  I like the baguettes N-S beside the radiant.  Are you going with step cut half moon sides?

Ahhhhh... as I would have guessed. Another gorgeous OMC design. Wonderful solution to broaden the "skinny" center stone. A stunning, timeless setting for a killer center stone. I love it and can't wait to see how the piece evolves.  notworthy

Hi Mikla - I don't know. To some extent, it would make sense, given the very "bucket of crushed ice" appearance of the centre. However I think it will be more a question of getting the right proportions and nicely cut stones, rather than brilliant-cut vs. step-cut.

Trinkette - you are too kind.

Ah, that rather depends on the number of flying pink hippos this season... (and on finding the right side stones) but I'll try to make it soon.

It's a stunning diamond, congrats on snagging it (however you did it lol).

Now, this might just be me, so if you disagree just ignore me, but I'm just not 100% sure ever about step cuts right next to brilliant cuts. Is there such a thing as a brilliant cut baguette? Or, could the half moons sit next to the radiant, and the baguettes sit on the shoulders? I know the brilliant / step cut mix can just ocassionally work beautifully - your wife's gorgeous pink ring is the obvious example, but I use that as the exception which proves the rule.

As I say, ignore me if you don't agree, just my 2 cents. As a wise man here once said, opinions are like noses...

Trink, while you're here, what do you think about step and brilliant cuts together? You've seen more shiny things than I have recently! Grin

I wonder if my prejudice is rooted in the bad, ugly things I've seen in stores and if done correctly it would be gorgeous.
I'm open to being persuaded.

Oh, and I'm craving marmalade now. The R Pie squared diamond is just luscious.

It looks delicious!  I love the contrast of shapes along with the contrast of sparkle and step cut!  Great design!

Jen

Ignore you, Jen? How could I?

I don't think you can get brilliant-cut baguettes; the pavillion is too narrow. You could get a princess-like effect by cutting concave facets on the bottom, but I'm not sure it would be worthwhile.

As Trinkette noted, the baguettes are the "trick" to square a very rectangular radiant, so while the half moons may also do something similar, I don't think the effect would be quite the same, since if the round is the same size as the rectangle, it dominates (especially since the rectangle is skinny), and if it is smaller, it needs something in between to get a progressive "stepping" effect, like Cartier "temple" pieces.

On the mix of step and brilliant cuts: it's not just my ring. Most Deco jewellery (and, now that I think of it, most jewellery DW and I own, Deco or not). A few examples:

1930s

1950s

1960s

1990s

2000s

Well, that's my best shot at persuading you. Any result?

Yes, I understand what you're saying about the progressive steps in the design and squaring the narrower rectangle. Makes perfect sense.

The pieces you posted are lovely, and the mix of cuts gives a very distinctive look through every era. The piece that really convinces me is the sapphire ring (which I had forgotten about) and of course the matching earrings that David created recently. I do think that my own preference is for keeping steps with steps and brilliants with brilliants, but I tend to favour small pieces (although I'm considering breaking away from that rather silly constraint haha) and I like them to be really simple.

The 1930s piece you posted is just divine. Is is a pendant? It's glorious.

It's a tiara centre ornament / clip, which DW uses as a clip brooch or as a pendant/choker, since it's pretty easy to hang from a cord or strap. More photos and info here. Unfortunately, the rest of the tiara is lost.

Honestly? I think you need to consider getting her a tiara.

DH could get me one too, then we could all have dinner a couple of times a year, black tie and tiaras.

David should make one for Sandra, then we could expand the dinner party.

Who else is in? Grin

...mmm, you already declared yourself for this once, and there weren't too many takers...

I don't mean to be discouraging, but... - on the other hand, the idea of the tiara ain't bad. Just let me win the lottery. If I do, there's a tiara for you. And one for Sandra.

There were a few takers, we sat around the office in our tiaras from time to time. It puzzled people, but we enjoyed it. BTW, you have a scarily good memory!

Just let me check one detail - do you buy a lottery ticket regularly!? Grin

Ah, these lawyers. Always checking the little details, always suspicious of the other party's intentions...

Sigh.

(I must confess: never bought one. But if you insist, I shall make it one of my New Year Commitments that one ticket a month shall be bought for the next year. If I don't win by then, it is because I am not Daniel Mandelbaum)

But, should I win a sufficient amount, I hereby declare to all and sundry that three tiaras will be bought: one for DW, one for Jen, one for Sandra. On condition that the aforementioned tiaras will be loaned free of charge to any CDI member who wishes to borrow one - including DJM in his strangest moments.

Member requesting tiaras to pay shipping and insurance, and arrange custom formalities. Other terms and conditions (don't) apply. Purchase not necessary. Your mileage may vary. Enough small print to satisfy a lawyer. Lovely!

If this comes to pass, I'll pick up the tab for dinner. Somewhere suitable to the tiaras.
